McGuinn is a real gentleman here answering really lame questions. A lot of patience. This could have been an great interview, so many things he could have explained from his long career. Would love to hear him comment Gary Usher, Terry Melcher, Gram Parsons for example.

Certainly there are many worse interviewers, but I agree it could be so much better. One should understand that an interview like that is an opportunity to gather stories and information from someone that is an idol to a lot of people. And he was more than willing to answer!

Agree completely, Roger is being a real polite gentleman. I've heard some stories that he was cantankerous and a real jerk sometimes, but he never comes off that way when the camera's rolling at least.

My wife and I saw Roger perform at Rockefeller’s in Houston - 5/30/85 - stood in line to see him after the show. Finally it was our turn to speak with the man. Told him how much his music meant to me and how I’d made a valentine card of him in ‘66. Told him I’d just bought a ‘67 Rickenbacker like his first one - a 360-12. He just asked if I had something for him to sign. I was crestfallen but still no less a fan.

As a huge fan, I've followed his career for some time (I also have a 360-12, actually a '67!), and read his former wife's (Ianthe) biography of her experiences with McGuinn and the Byrds. Not being judgemental, he hasn't always been a nice person. There's something very masked and mechanical about the guy's persona. I was very disappointed after reading the biography. Not surprised at his detachment and coldness during your meeting.

He went through a rough period in the 80's where he was low on $$$ and just cleaned up off of drugs from the blown-out 70's and supposedly he had kicked some bad habits. I've seen things where he's been super chill and awesome and other days where he's kind of tired or over it. You might have gotten him at a bad moment or he could have been super tired, who knows! :)

This interview might sound lame in 2020 but this was really one of his first interviews so the questions do sound rather basic. But CDs had just came out and these bands had only started to refer to themselves as “legends” in the liner notes for a couple of months at this point. He was hardly an active musician at the time with no new music for over 9 years.

McGuinn’s own Log of Dates has him playing McCabe’s in LA on 4/26/86. Looks like this interview happened there.

For all the gripers, show me a good interview of a musician. Most of them are extremely superficial, this one actually sounds somewhat informed. Love that Roger quoted Frank Zappa!

Roger is referring to this wonderful documentary aired April, 1967 before summer of Love, peppers, The Doors , Jimi etc....Roger (as Jim is featured a few times as well) at 32:00 is Zappa's sloppy quote on the revolution.... He is priceless at the end and Brian Wilson solo on "Surf's Up will break your heart.... another time far away from now....kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8yFapl7r8nVpX0.html

He’s given the same interview a dozen other times. His story only happened once so it is sort of redundant to interview people like this multiple times. All interviews are basically scripted by the artist themselves anyway. I’ve seen him in concert four times and it’s exactly the same rehearsed storytelling every time.
