Rogue/Warlock is ALL about the invocations. The ability to round a corner, bonus action hide, then turn invisible in dim light or darkness as an action until someone passes. The ability to cast Disguise Self at will with access to the Friends cantrip lets you disguise yourself as another person, use the Friends cantrip to talk your way past a guard, then you find cover and change to someone else, and when Friends wears off, they know you manipulated them, and are now hunting down the WRONG person. Misty Visions letting you create a rock or tree illusion as an action, then bonus action hiding behind or inside of it, etc. This is the infiltrator cultist build. It's really strong. Easy A, and can't be lower than a B. I homebrewed a Cultist subclass for Rogue that was like the Warlock version of an Arcane Trickster, and it's really fun.

Best. Video. Series. Ever. Also, here’s how I typically feel about Rogues. The “best” Rogues in 5e usually don’t have more than 3 levels in Rogue 😬. Making a mechanically potent character (read: damage) who’s mostly Rogue can often be an uphill battle. Looking forward to the challenge :).

I am here specifically to vouch for the rogue/cleric or Cleric/rogue build, specifically I once played a Twilight Cleric Scout Rogue that was the most fun I’ve ever had in combat. Being able to fly through the air while sniping people from the darkness with a crossbow at advantage while also strafing your Allies and making sure they never die with support spells while still pulling your weight with damage. Granted, that was more Cleric than Rogue, but damn it was a blast

Another thing to add to this, if you take the earth genie (I think it's the djinn I've forgotten the name) you deal bludgeoning damage equal to your proficiency bonus. This really works well with the crusher feat, as you can get forced movement on LITERALLY anything. It can essentially function as a free disengage, or for characters who really want forced movement. For example, an arcane archer using grasping arrow with this is pretty great, as you can immediately push them 5 feet dealing 2d6 poison and 2d6 slashing (from the forced movement). It's a bit of an investment but man it can work well!

The thing about casters is that you can sneak attack off a booming blade and GFB if using an appropriate weapon, and while you could just pick these up from Magic Initiate, you do get a lot of cool things from a wizard dip like a bunch of utility spells, or being able to quicken GFB as a sorc etc.

Hey just a thing you guys didn’t mention but it’s worth noting how minimally a barbarian rogue needs to Invest to be an amazing grappler for their team. With the Skill Expert feat from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, you really don't need to dip into Rogue to be great at grappling like this. Also, I think Rune Knight fighter is better than Barbarian for this because its Giant's Might ability makes you bigger as well as gives you advantage on Strength checks. Being bigger is a huge advantage for a grappler because grappling rules in 5e limit you to grappling things which are up to 1 size category larger than you. If you are large-sized, you can now grab huge enemies.

Just a reminder: the one Rogue subclass that works with Wild Shape is Soul Blade. Just summon a psychic blade while in Wild Shape form and you can proc Sneak Attack. The psychic blade will leave no trace of injury and you can slink out without ever leaving animal form. This works RAW. Edit: You may need hands to summon the psychic blades, but there are animals other than humanoids that have hands. Also, there are some beast forms that have throwing attacks, of which would proc Sneak Attack on any Rogue subclass. Edit 2: thrown weapon attacks only activate sneak attack when the weapon is a finesse weapon so rocks and shit won't work. However, if an ape can throw a rock with any kind of precision, I'd say it can also throw a psychic dagger. Because of that, I'd say assassin monkey is still on the table.

100% agree. Im running a rogue/lock right now (swashbuckler/fathomless) and the combination of invocations/pact of the blade/couple of nifty spells per short rest is phenomenal. Not the best rogue multiclass, but everyone always gets blinded with the whole "well, it is only good with hexblade" crap and forget the rest of it. Level 8 with 5 rogue/ 3 warlock and it has been an absolute blast to play with mask of many faces/devils sight. and in 2 levels, ill have thirsting blade for extra attack which rogues never even get in the first place. Shadowblade is great for getting advantage on that one sneak attack. I've played that same build Monty loved, the Arcane Trickster/Bladesinger build that uses Shadow Blade. I only went 2 levels of Wizard and 8 Rogue, but those 2 levels are awesome. Great defense and strong concentration checks from Bladesong, and the mobility to keep throwing Shadow Blades when in a dim light or dark area, which is easy advantage. I support this! Not only are Metamagics very versatile and does the Swashbuckler get an awesome initiative with a charisma investmen , you can also pick up Booming Blade. Now you use your action to Booming Blade with a Sneak attack on top, you can quicken a second Booming Blade giving you a nice burst of damage that scales well. Then the Swashbuckler allows you to step away from the target without provoking an attack of opportunity forcin the target to either stay put and not be able to get back into melee, or move and take the extra damage from Booming Blade. I think any Rogue with Metamagics and a decent spell to concentrate on, is at the very least interesting (if your DM allows you to use Booming Blade with Shadow Blade you won the lotery), but a Swashbuckler with Booming Blade and quickened spell metamagic takes the hit-and-run playstyle to a whole new level.

I'm exited for Booming Blade paired with the Fancy Footwork ability, also Darkness and Devil's Sight combo to give me reliable advantage. Since I can only Sneak Attack once per turn and I have a good vary good chance of hitting with my one attack the bonus action attack from my imp familiar is pretty substantial. Wizard and Rogue makes for a great pairing. Ritual Casting is potent utility, just with 1st through second level. Unseen Servant can literally be your inside man. Familiars are great. As for classes Bladesinging is good, but just a few levels of many other schools are great. These short 3 level dips give ritual casting, useful spells booming blade/Green flame blade cantrips to augment your sneak attacks. Divination portent is always useful. Chronurgy's Chronal shift is handy, then you get an initiative bump form Intelligence. Minor Conjuration--all you need to do is see a key to a hard to open place, and boom who needs lockpicking? Hypnotic gaze makes those solo stealing moments so much easier. What can a smart Rogue not do with an illusionists Improved Minor illusion? Even War magic gives you defensive options--sometimes that +2 to AC means you don't get hit at all, instead of taking half form normally using your reaction or having a boost to saves can really be useful. and you get an initiative boost. Second level spells like Invisibility, Alter Self, Detect Thoughts, Suggestion make a Rogues life easier. And the many direct combat affecting spells go without mention. You can add all of this to another Rogue subclass, or supercharge Arcaner trickster for a three-level investment, or 4 for the feat and extra spell. Going higher to 6th brings potent abilities for each school plus third level spells, but I'm perfectly fine with 3 levels.

I think Rogue Wizzard is an A, not because of the bladesinger rouge build, although I think that is a good build maybe more wizard than rouge though so maybe more a point when it comes to their wizzard multi-class video. I think Rogue Wizzard is an A because their general standard for an A is that there are so many good build or dip options that you almost can't go wrong, and I think that is so true for the wizzard. All the stuff you pointed out, I would just say in particular any intellengce rouge espically benefits ofc. The real stand outs to me are arcane trickster with illusionist or enchanment Wizzard, but really almost any wizzard is a boon to almost any rouge. It gets a lot of the flavor and verstatility you want from the bard with the spells but can double up a little easier for some of the best Rogue subclasses because they already want intellegence. Expertise in investigation, I think is an easily underrated option where so many traps and puzzles have conditions where you get more information from good investigation checks. Also while perception might be better in a flash like seeing enmies before surprise or a trap someone is about to step on, any time you do have time, investigation should be allowed as a stuible if not superior subsitute for perception. Definately a know, your party, know your campaign, know your DM thing though. As always it is a good time to speak to your DM and explain to them what you are hoping for out of it and adjust if that doesn't vibe with their campaign or how they do ability checks.

Something that I don't think I ever hear about in their rankings is ritual casting and the wizard spell book, which I think plays a big role in the Rogue/Wizard multiclass. Having the book and being able to expand your spell list is super useful, and not having to prep the ritual spells like Cleric and Druid is also a key component when I'm building anything, and I feel should be more considered, or at least mentioned in their videos.

I'm not sure that is accurate RAW, they might have mispoken on that one. As soon as they said it, I was like I don't think so. Unless the lightning gauntlet says it is/counts as a fenese weapon... Edit: it is a ranged weapon so it just works RAW and clearly works my bad.
@toddhadley9002
@toddhadley9002 Жыл бұрын
@@brcoutme I was thinking the same thing, until I looked it up. Sneak Attack also works with ranged weapons, and the lightning launcher "counts as a simple ranged weapon." I also like that once per turn you can add 1d6 to the damage. It helps to offset the sneak attack progression you miss out on by sacrificing 3 levels of rogue for 3 levels of artificer.. And because the extra damage from your lightning launcher happens even if the attack isn't eligible for sneak attack, it might actually come out ahead.
@QuatarTarandir

@toddhadley9002 Another thing is since the lightning launcher is a ranged weapon, you can use sharpshooter with it. Soulknife lets you use a Strength Option. I have actually made this build before: Kalashtar Soulknife Ancestral Guardian. You can throw your blades so geting Rage off is not a problem and lets you mark targets far away, use strength for all your attacks, everything is unarmed and unarmored so you can be butt naked and still be VERY dangerous. No magical weapons need, no Feats needed so you can prioritize ASI higher DEX means higher AC. It synergises incredibly well. I rolled for stats instead of point buy, so with a shield I had a AC of 21 at level 1 and I just got tankier from there.

Great video! Love hearing your thoughts on how to play with my absolute favorite class. It is my favorite, so get ready for a lot of thoughts. An interesting difference of opinion I have with some of your multi class ranking, is I think the difference between a multi class making a stronger character vs making rogue stronger. Particularly I wouldn’t rank Bard, Cleric or Druid as high because the deeper you go into those the build becomes more of a spell caster who doesn’t sneak attack as much. Contrary wise, classes that give access to things like Shadow Blade or Eldritch Smite can still encourage the core rogue play style without sacrificing damage. And I would argue All the martial’s pair very well with rogue since they focus on attacks but won’t end up having redundant Extra Attack. Druid, Bard and Cleric are still good, but as a dip for Rogues, not deep multi classing. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk

My second character was a rogue tabaxi , who took a 3 lv dip into barbarian (bear totem). As somebody who played this, I would give it an A. I gave up 1d6 sneak attack damage for rage (which gives you +2 damage) and reckless attack. Because you actually can do a strength based attack with a rapier. Not to mention a few more hitpoints, better AC and a few other little things. It's definitly better than a straight up rogue or barbarian.

There is so much to do with a rogue multiclass. It's so much fun, and I enjoy watching y'all explore the options. I'll throw some ideas out there. Rogue/warlock gets a TON of mileage out of infinite disguise self and silent image. Throw in the actor feat and expertise on social skills (deception, performance, insight, and maybe persuasion or stealth), and you have a terrifyingly effective infiltrator. This is the charisma form of assassin rat's wisdom rogue/druid. Now if you combined the three using phb human to get five 14s in your stats... Horrifying. Also, a ritual casting rogue or a rogue with a super familiar is also super clutch. Also, use relentless hex to cast Hex on a familiar, and then teleport to it each turn. Use another invocation for infinite invisibility in shadows. There's an invocation for seeing through walls. There's a ton that the rogue wants here. Next up, the rogue/ cleric is S tier. In this essay I will... Seriously though, there's a good pairing for most of the subclasses: Thief/ trickery, assassin/ trickery, assassin/ grave (double the damage of a crit), scout/ knowledge (Indiana Jones with 7 expertise by level 4), etc. There's a lot of fun to be had with this build. Heck, every rogue wants guidance and enhance ability, and trickery clerics get pass without a trace.

I have a Rogue/Gloomstalker Ranger and she is amazing! She only has one level of rogue so far, but I plan to take several levels in it going forward. I hadn't intended to make her a rogue, but her backstory was as a criminal, and since we're a party of two, I needed her to be able to fill multiple roles. She can not only open locked doors and sneak around, she also is an intimidating dual wielder who can deal real damage in a single turn. As a half-orc, with Umbral Sight she can see 90' in the dark and is invisible to those using darkvision. With Dreaded Ambusher, on her first attack she gets 40' of movement, her regular attack, her Ambusher attack, her second attack and her off-hand strike in the first round. That's four attacks if she's not already Hasted by her partner. If she has time to prepare, she can caste Zephyr's strike on herself which also gives her an extra 30' of movement for a round and no attacks of opportunity can be made against her, so she can move through an enemy party almost at will. Once per casting, she can give herself advantage on a strike, which I always use on her Ambusher attack. I have only hit a natural 20 once so far, but when she did, she got her regular scimitar damage, her Favored Foe damage, her ambusher damage, her Zephyr's strike damage, sneak attack, and Savage Attacker, which equated to 5d6+4d8+2d4 for one strike. It was glorious. And the beautiful thing about Zephyr's Strike is that it's a free action to drop it and only a bonus action to re-cast it. She is a beast!

Comment 2 electric Boogaloo. I literally just built a Rogue 15 Barbarian 5 as kind of a think tank character. Dual weilding rapiers with the dual weirder feat, Totem Warrior and Scout for flavor, focusing on strength instead of dexterity, who wears medium armor and gets a +1 from dual wielder. You can have a 18 ac with half plate, and Expertise in Stealth to really ignore the disadvantage. On top of that you have Dex save proficiency, danger sense for advantage on dex saves, and evasion. If you get hit with a fireball, you are likely to not care. Sure you give up 2d6 sneak attack. But you replace that with extra attack with a d8 weapon, and the Piercer feat for a better brutal critical. I'd say it's an S if wisdom saves weren't an issue, but rogues and Barbarians both have wisdom saving throw problems.

Rogue/ sorcerer is also super interesting for approaching a gish build. The biggest factor to address when building a gish is to OVERCOME THE ACTION ECONOMY BARRIER that prevents you from achieving martial AND caster flavors ON THE SAME TURN (caps for emphasis, not anger). The best action economy can be found in the following ways: fighter dip, rogue dip, sorcerer dip, and spells that use bonus actions. The classes that you are trying to outdo are the martial half-casters, who incidentally have the most bonus action spells: paladin and ranger. Fighter/ caster build would compete more with the paladin, but the rogue/ caster build would compete more with the ranger. The rogue/ sorcerer can use booming blade and greenflame blade to stack damage with the sneak attack dice. The rogue can use cunning action to manuever the battlefield while setting up a big spell, especially one that uses your bonus action. Or it can attack while controlling a spell. It can use quicken spell to setup buffs or controls while attacking. There's a lot here. Not as much as the fighter/ sorcerer, but plenty.

Rogue barbarian: "The Jason" I call the build this way because it gives you everything Jason (or any horror villain/monster) has: great power, great resilience and uncanny mobility. Take the beast barbarian and scout rogue for an average Xenomorph. Take zealot barbarian and assasin rogue for Jason Voorhees. Take berserker barbarian and inquisitive rogue for Michael Meyers. Or just take any combination of 3 levels barbarian and X levels in Rogue and you become a versatile and unique character to play.

An Arcane Trickster multiclassed with 1 level of Wizard now becomes a ritual caster on all their ritual spells. For exploration and infiltration on a Rogue this is a huge boost for only 1 level dip. Plus, it now lets you recast Find Familiar if your familiar is destroyed, whereas otherwise an AT has to spend a spell slot to do so AND still take an hour to cast making it not worth it.
@BW022
@BW022 11 ай бұрын
No. A wizard can only ritual cast spells which are in their spell book. Any spell learned as an arcane trickster can't be ritual cast, unless it's also in the wizard's spell book. It does mean that spells such as detect magic, identify, find familiar, etc. don't need to be taken/known as an arcane trickster, so those spells slots can be used for ones you know you'll be casting.
@TheHandgunhero
@TheHandgunhero 11 ай бұрын
@BW022 I'm aware, and what I'm saying is you can take these spells as a Wizard instead of an AT, which you likely are anyway given that ATs are not ritual casters. Find Familiar is usually the only ritual spell ATs will regularly take, but this build you can take it with Wizard instead to make it a ritual.

I played a hexblade/swashbuckler with the mobile feat for a few levels. Worked really nicely, as I was pretty much always able to throw damage on whichever target I wanted. Able to get in close? Sneak attack. Enemies far away, eldritch blast. I had the invocations to move people, so I could maneuver enemies around into better positions. Don't know if it would've held up at higher levels, but it was quite effective at low levels.

Having strongly considered it before, one of the big benefits to Rogue/Barbarian is expertise in athletics combined with advantage while raging. This opens up shoves (shield bash if DM allows it first) to gain advantage on your attacks without giving up your AC. Plus you become an incredible grappler if you want to do that.

You aren't giving up damage at all. The difference in sneak attack is 2d6 (3d6 to 5d6) or 7 points of damage A short sword attack (assuming a +4 to str) is 3.5+4 for 7.5. Except- -you do both attacks at advantage, so increased odds of doing sneak attack -you get to add +2 to each attack, so you actually do about 4.5 more damage (before calculating to hit chances, which again, are higher with the barbarian thanks to reckless) So, not only do you get a ton of resilience Rogue 5/Barbarian 5 is just straight up better than the rogue. This is also assuming you use a short sword and not a rapier, or that you don't pick up 2-weapon fighting style

And the amount of extra gravy the barb gives it at base that then is even more enhanced from the subclass like go bear for more self defense, ag for tank, beast for more attacks, zealot for more damage, etc. And if going giant barb to level 6 that is just more damage and amazing grapples

@@darkestlight660 yeah honestly that is 11th level rogue so the chances for that is slim and even so you can still get it as you are most likely not going 10 levels in barb, the most you would probably go is 8 at most for asi, 7 if you want advantage in initiate and no surprise plus being able ot move the turn you rage, 6th for 2nd subclass level, or 5th level for extra attack So that is a slight decrease in that ultity but the amount of other types of utility, support, and damage barbarian brings is so much worth, way better than straight rogue

I think it's an over looked pairing. I'm about to play a Swashbuckler/ Hexblade, Pact of the Chain, Warlock in a campaign. Plus Hexblade's Curse making 19 also a critical hit is very good for rogues with sneak attack, it synergizes well with Swashbuckler's mechanics for one on one dueling with the strongest enemy.
