BBC Click visited ILM London to chat about Rogue One and discover how the visual effects for the film were created.
Computer graphics supervisor Steve Ellis spoke about some of the challenges in making the film and showed off a virtual camera that director Gareth Edwards used to direct some shots.
The film has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Visual Effects category.

It's mind blowing how many polished CGI models the city of Jeddah had (5:04) just so that a couple of angles are used in the final film from up close (and sometimes hidden at 80% by real environments 5:26). I can't imagine the amount of man-hours something like this involves, it's crazy.

well if its team then its not realy long time building it. texturing it is little bit "harder" becouse of UVmaps and detailing. hard to tell how much manhours it takes. its realy about how many people worked on that.

One would think they would recycle these massive cityscapes for, like, video games and stuff, if it's been fully modeled already--but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the most beautiful, detailed models like this never see the light of day after they're made.

Man, people on the internet read things so literally. They obviously didn't film the movie with a Nintendo. I know that. I was paraphrasing guys. -____-

Those aren't WiiU controllers. Those are Gamevice controllers for iPhone and iPad devices. Many people mistake them for 'Switch' controllers thought they have been out years ago.

So, they just made a cgi-created-miniature set and Gareth moved his cgi-camera around in it! What an incredible way to create a SW film. It is made of cgi, but at it has a tone of miniatures like the old time movies had as well. That's what makes Rogue One so loveble and hype work of art!

At this point can we all agree that CGI doesn't suck and that the practical effects of the 80's (as great as they were back in the day) pale in comparison to modern CGI.

No, we can’t. Miniature practical models and special effects are far more believable than digital ones. My planned future film and tv productions will always use practical effects where possible and CGI only where absolutely necessary.

Haha... this is kind of impressive to non-3D artists, but really, Gareth could sit down with the ALT key, CTRL key, and a mouse to find his shots just as easily. Possibly moreso. He is after all, an actual digital artist who knows his way around these programs. The iPad is quaint and all, but it doesn't look like it offers much in the way of a benefit to the user.

AJ King I don't think so. This technology kinda resembles moving a camera, wich, for a director, is way different than doing these things on a computer
@ajking913
@ajking913 7 жыл бұрын
I am a VFX artist, and I have directed. I also know that Gareth is a VFX artist himself, so there is no learning curve for him to just sit at the desk there and move the virtual camera where he liked, plus set key frames and adjust the motion curves for a smooth camera move. Trust me when I say this, that iPad and controller are a gimmick that brings next to nothing to the table for him specifically as a director. Perhaps for a director who has no VFX experience, this might be an advantage, but for him, it isn't worth the time to set up (let alone construct).
@schwanzuslongus1147
@schwanzuslongus1147 7 жыл бұрын
AJ King If it was better to just do it in front of a desk, why didn't Gareth just do it like that? I mean, he must have has his reasons to shoot pretty much all his CG-imagery like this
@ajking913
@ajking913 7 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing, oddly enough, that it may have something to do with unions. As a VFX artist, doing directing duties exclusively this time around, it is very likely that he wasn't allowed to do any of the vfx work directly. This setup skirts the unions because he is 'directing' still, but not 'doing' the animation of the virtual camera. The guys in the video say Gareth was able to give them a start and end frame, which is direction. If he did the desk version, setting keyframes, he'd technically be animating. But also, because if it's a new thing that gets handed to you when you walk into a room, you'd try it out simply out of respect for the person handing it to you. Whether it is more useful than what he's used to is debatable at best.

TBH, this seems like an excessive waste of the 3D modeller's time. There were only a few scenes in Jedha, and they could have been done without being forced to model the entire city in such details. The filmmaking business is very inconsiderate of the modellers, animator and roto artists as it expects stuff like this to be so simple. Sure, some of the buildings were instanced, and a lot of them could have been created with Greebles, however,studios still overwork their 3D teams just to suit the whims of the directors, which is just plain wrong, especially given how underpaid they are for the amount of work they do.

TFA didnt have models for ships and such, though, the practical was more for, well, practical stuff. Aliens, explosions, that sorta thing, as it was in R1. I see no issue with the use of CG in R1. Besides, most of this stuff you couldn't even tell was CG, so what difference does it make?
