The real magic of the song begins when Amit Kumar starts crooning, "Aankhon par kuch aise tumne zulf gira di hain..." I could listen to it a million times without ever feeling anything less than blissful. But there's another reason why this line hits me so hard in the feels. I was 12 then, and she was 13. It was afternoon, and she was fresh from a bath. Her long hair ("zulf") was loose, and it fell around her shoulders. She was standing right in front of me, and when someone called her, she quickly turned around, and the swish of her wet hair caught me in the eyes ("aankhon par zulf"), blinding me for an instant. In that split second of darkness, something happened within me. It was only later that I realised I had fallen in love. Terribly. Irremediably. Irrevocably. I tried to get into a relationship with her, but she wouldn't accept me as anything more than a friend. Today she is married to someone else, and here I am, still stuck with her memories that often keeps me up far into the night ("kuch khwabon ki neend ura di hain"). But enough digressions! Coming back to the song, I would say it's Amit Kumar's stamp of greatness. Keeping pace with the great Asha Ji is itself a daunting task, but to stand out in a song co-sung by Asha Ji is incredible.
