Hello from Bournemouth in the UK! Love your videos and hoping you can help with a wee question I have! I’m wondering if it’s possible to have multitrack stems saved to an SSD to play along to, live? I’d love to be able to leave the laptop at home altogether really! No worries if not though! Thanks again for all your hard work through this past year especially!

Hello Ed, Have you played the Fantom 7? How does the keys feel? Recently I bought a Fantom 8 as they did not have a 7. The keys are very heavy and I am so not used to the heavy keys. I want to take it back and get the 7. They don’t have it in stock now but have to special order it. Can you tell if the keys are semi weighted a bit smoother than 8. Thanks.

Honest question, Ed. Which is better? The Fantom or the Fantom G? So many people still say they prefer their G and do not want to upgrade. On the Roland Forums, quite a few who purchased the new Fantom to replace their G said they returned it and will be sticking with the G. If you're allowed to state, which do you prefer of the two? Thanks, and great content as always!

To me, this is my opinion from what I see regarding Roland and their Synthesisers/workstation keyboards in that they have taken away features that would groundbreaking and made them stand out they simply could have improved on or added on to what the current synthesizer workstations keyboard bring. And I think you are no it but you just don't playing it doing your jobs which you've been ordered to do which is to promote and do multiple spins regarding features well at the same time downplay what's been taken away regarding these products. And you're fooling the People narrowing down the potential of this product to only gigging keyboard player musicians while ignoring and sidelining musicians like me who are producers who like to create beats songs, compositions that are contemporary such as Hip-hop, Drum & Bass, Trap, Grime, Drill, Techno, EDM, etc etc. I think Roland has lost touch with the wider market regarding musicmakers of all sorts and sound design. And focusing predominantly to the gigging live performance musicians. The only relevant workstation so far that I still use is my Roland fantom G6. I think the new Fantoms have fallen off or I would say pushed off the cliff. From the Fantom FA series and it's gotton worse with the Fantom and Fantom 0 series. For example, iconic features that make a workstation is its ability to be stand alone aka without a computer. And if needed to be hooked up to a computer, then it should have been given integration with at least five (5 at the very least) current popular Daws (take your pick of what those most popular Daws should be integrated ) .... And that sequencer should have the option to be linear such as in the G Series. The fact that the G series had 128 internal and /or midi tracks plus 24 linear audio tracks with their own separate mixer and effects capabilities is something other workstations including Roland's new Fantom line have fallen way way too short of. For example, I use the 16 track mixer in conjunction with the 128 and internal tracks like this. I would use sequencer track one for a kick, track two for another type of kick, and do the same with track 3... remember on the G Series you could have an effects for each instrument independently known as PFX. So track 1 would have a low pass filter with some EQ. Track 2 would have the same thing as track 1 but with different filter and EQ curves and this would be repeated for tracks 3. I would then route those internal instruments kicks to channel one of the mixer and then put a compressor on that mixer channel along with some EQ. Now that channel acts like a kick bus channel... don't forget I have the master effects on the stereo output too that I can add to such as master EQ band compression, and others. This is just how easy but yet sophisticated, a simulation I can get to that of a real studio mixer desk. When it comes to sampling this is where they are most definitely falling really short. For example, there is no real-time time stretch and tempo locking of a sample to the bpm of a song or track like that on the on the G Series along with AUTO CHOP CAPABILITIES of various types. And assigning each chop to a different keys on the keyboard or to individuals sample pads in any order you want to be triggered anyway you like in conjunction with the sequencer, with each sample locked to BPM. Along with other key sampling processing features again such as the ability to calculate the beats per minute of a sample is absolutely brilliant with drum loops I mean did that have to be taken away I mean come on.. And don't forget, how could anyone forget, or overlook SKIP BACK SAMPLING??!! That was an INVALUABLE tool and could have been improved upon. I mean, I have my skipback sampling ON all the time, 80 seconds or one minute and 20 seconds maximum, but it's enough for me to catch things that I've passed, or previously played, seamlessly and brilliantly integrated within the internal circuitry routed through my audio input. I have it CONSTANTLY ON, so that even watching this KZfaq clip, I can go back and capture and then playback the sample anytime I want. Roland getting rid of this feature was a cardinal sin. Roland shot themselves in the foot with that omission, how could they take this feature away? And when it comes to the Arpeggio there's so many options, you can make/create/program them yourself, edit with ample as well as upon amples of Presets with the ability to save to USB and import Arpeggios, it's so brilliant it's is sick and I use all the time. And back to that Daw like linear sequencer, and its ability to add swing by adjusting by percentage how tight you want your quantization to be, from 0-100 %. As well as add, copy, duplicate, repeat, shorten or lengthening of tracks or parts of a track or time signature or parts.... 🤦‍♂️ How could Roland do away with so many great features. Back to the effects that is just another area where they're falling off making it possible to root an edit effects with ample various parameters to me was just brilliant. And the sliders and knobs can be assigned to various parameters regarding it be a a instruments envelope oscillator or effects that can be automated. And that d Beam... Look up what Native Instruments did when they came out with Maschine mark 1, then Maschine studio, Maschine mark 3 and Maschine mark 3 plus...? And the Akai with their MPC Touch and MPC X... I use my G Series in a way very very similar because it is capable to be very very close to those later mentioned Groovebox Sampler Workstations. When my friend come with those mentioned grooveboxes sampler workstations and they do something I'm able to emulate what they doing on the G Series they are blown away especially the 24- linear audio tracks that seamlessly and in conjunction with the integrated sampler features and sequencer and effects processing. I think Roland is missing something here. And I think it's the younger audience aka market Who make produce create contemporary music, and not just be stage performance musicians, who are predominantly looking for synths and Piano sounds with the odd sequencing and sampling capabilities. This is why the G Series should have been improved upon by having a better daw integration like what the new Fantom has now and then some. For people who make hip-hop EDM Drum & Bass, Trap, Drill, Grime and all manner of contemporary music including film score.. And to be able to be connected to the Internet to a bank of sounds cloud which is a brilliant thing Roland is doing with the current Fantoms. Along with all the USB capabilities that was already in the G-series, Roland could have went somewhere really big and innovative if they Incorporated all the past features of the G-Series into the new Roland fantom workstation/synthesisers. The Roland could have took it so far the competition would have been left for dead. For example Native Instruments Maschine and akai MPC now have sidechain compressor routing built-in by just choosing one of the integrated compressors and route it to a sidechaining of a kick, snare or drum loop in conjunction with a pad or synth sound. Let that sink in for a minute... don't get me wrong I love Roland some would say I am a Roland fan boy. I am a mature man of 50 years but the people who it is overly priced and marketed to are not people who are making music in a contemporary way in my opinion if Roland or anybody from The Development Team just for a minute just thought or consider what I I'm saying, what I am suggesting, what I'm proposing, putting forward the next Fantom would be a studio and Performance showstopper... that's why I've kept my G6 and that's where my Roland and fanboy support stops. Did have the new Fantom 6, but it's now for sale. Because to me although it sonically superb it's nothing more than a sound module with cheaper feeling keys...All Roland, had to do is add to the G series Fantom what the Fantom 7 has or rather add the mentioned features of G-series to the 2019 Fantom along with its CV controls connections, XLR in's and outs touchscreen etc etc.... And that to me would have been progress. Akai will be bringing out a MPC as powerful as the X but with a keyboard 🎹... Come on...

@@2daysago891 one thing I liked that the Fantom X Series had over the G Series, was when it came to chopping the sample and splitting them manually and putting in where you want to start and end points for each sample split you was able to hear the sound as you moved scroll along to your points and they took that away from the G Series it seems to me that Roland keep taking away key features when it comes to this workstation keyboard and the only people who don't know it are the new owners or who don't care for these features they simply want a controller and synthesis piano

@@alldhat-n-den-sum4190 I Totally AGREE!!! 100%...The NEW Fantoms just lack so much...like NO Linear Sequencer, NO multiple time signatures, NO Tempo Track, NO Audio Tracks NO ability to load/save/edit SMF & SVQ files...and the list goes on and on...and in 2022 the New "0" series only has 256mb UN expandable memory...imo the new Fantoms are REALLY expencive midi controllers with a new sound engine and NOT a workstation...Simply, Neither of the New Fantoms could replace my X7...Sadly. My first Roland Workstation I had was the W30...and every model after Roland added things...until this new batch...I use my Fantoms in 3 bands and use the sequencer in my X in all, and my master board and NO LAPTOP...in fact...I don't even OWN a laptop anymore...I had high hopes for the new batch fantoms to, as I'm a huge Fantom fan...and you're right...I think the people that rave about them have never used any of the older X and G....or...are just straight laptopers...in that case they should just use vst's and a controller as their is no need for a fantom....So it's not just people like yourself...it's live musicians as well that are disappointed in the new fantom's.
