Hello and thanks for being here at the Merriam Pianos KZfaq channel for another piano review. Today, we’ve got a full review of the fairly recently released Roland HP704. This is Roland’s top HP model, and essentially represents one of the entry points to the top half of Roland’s lineup.

Piano Overview
Roland’s top home line is their LX line, which features their top action, sound technology, speakers and cabinetry. The HP line is next up, and the HP704 represents the top HP offering. While not as advanced as the LX series instruments, the HP704 is still a professional quality, upper tier instrument.
Piano Sound
Roland has loaded up the HP704 with their SuperNATURAL modeled piano engine. This was their top engine until recently with the release of the PureAcoustic engine, but the SuperNATURAL engine is still a highly relevant, highly musical engine. It offers limitless polyphony on acoustic piano tones, and 384 notes on all other patches.
The Piano Designer function allows the user to edit a whole bunch of effects, such as key touch, ambience, brilliance, master tuning, and many more. There’s 324 total on-board sounds, basically all of professional quality, and the LCD user interface makes it super easy to navigate the various sounds.
In terms of the speakers, the HP704 has 4 speakers, driven by 60 watts of power via two amplifiers. This is enough power to fill a small or medium sized room no problem. Overall, the sound engine and speaker combination makes for a very pleasing, authentic experience.
Piano Action
One of the big upgrades over the HP702 is that the HP704 is outfitted with Roland’s PHA50, as opposed to the PHA4 found in the 702. The PHA4 is a plastic action, while the PHA50 is a wood/plastic hybrid that feels closer to an acoustic piano. This action features a triple sensor for more accurate MIDI output, as well as escapement.
I personally own and gig with an RD2000, so I’m very familiar with this action. I can say from experience that this is a super durable action, and even after 1000’s of hours of use, there’s no unwanted key noise or clicking.
If you’re looking at a long term investment, the action might be a strong reason to spring for the HP704 as opposed as the HP702 given the greater durability.
Piano Features
The HP704 is compatible with Roland’s new Piano Every Day app. It’s essentially an education app that also functions as a practice journal that should be helpful for new learners. There’s also a super useful and intuitive auto-accompaniment feature that’s a ton of fun.
In terms of connectivity, the HP704 has dual ¼” outputs, 2 headphone jacks, USB type A and B, as well as a line in, not to mention both Bluetooth MIDI and Audio.
The HP704 is available in a remarkable 5 finishes; satin black, white, light oak, dark rosewood, as well as polished ebony (which commands a $1,000 premium.) The cabinetry and finish quality is excellent, so the HP704 won’t look out of place in a nice room.
Conclusion
This is a fine instrument that compares very well against other competitors in it’s class. Definitely check it out next time you’re in a piano showroom!
