Why on earth would you give this a thumb down? Why? The guys spent almost 8 hours recording ALL the possible sounds that exists in the keyboard so that we ALL get to hear them before deciding to buy the keyboard and some people are still being ungrateful. Come one man, Funk that! Thank you Ben Allen for your post.

Agreed. It's a good thing to have the sounds available and to hear them played well, whether one chooses this instrument or not. If he got payed to do it, good for him. But I can see concert pianists and orchestral musicians still disliking such machines, along with people in the synth world who are ideologically anti-Roland or anti-digital. It's easy to fall into feeling smugly superior to this or that and to waste energy disliking stuff.

PaulusSANtosoCI Widjaja thank you! I did this simply to make this information available. I do not feel that the internet presently has enough good examples of the sounds like I tried to show here. It took quite a while, I did it in large segments. What comes across best I think, is just how FEW of the sounds in the RD-2000 (and RD-800) are poor. In my opinion, most of the sounds here are quite good, though as a Stage Piano, that is the focus.

@@benallen5967 Now i dont have basically any use for wind/brass sounds, they usually just sound cheezy, but I DO want good celeste, glockenspiel, music box, mallet instruments, and harp, along with really good rhodes wurli clav and piano. Do you feel this does especially well for all of those?

@benallen59672 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your kind words! This was several years ago, and I no longer have the RD-2000. It is an excellent board, but at the current prices, I think you have better options. Almost nobody needs this many sounds, and a huge number of them are available through the Roland Cloud. As a “Stage Piano” I currently use and recommend the Yamaha CP88 and YC88. For a pure synth, a don’t think you can beat the Novation Summit, or if it’s old Roland Synth tones you want, for simplicity and ease of use, the System 8 is what I’d suggest. If you want a synth focused workstation-ish option, the Jupiter X or Juno X are going to give you access to thousands of tones, including the ZenCore library. If you want the Supernatural tones plus ZenCore with more editing options on board, the Fantom 0 series is hard to beat, though I dislike how non-intuitive it can be. I used to be a big fan of the workstation concept, and the Kronos, Montage, Fantom etc…but lately, I find that idea sort of paralyzing because of the massive power and options in one place- you can save yourself a lot of money by getting a Mac with Logic and buying Diva, Omnisphere, and whatever libraries you like…and an midi controller, but even that isn’t my approach of choice these days. These days, I find a lot of joy in having individual keyboards that do just one thing, or a very few things, very well. Need a Stage Piano and aren’t an organ player? The Yamaha CP88 feels and sounds better than anything else I’ve played- plus you get a built in interface and a very well made and thought out instrument. Need the organ sounds too? Get the YC88. There is nothing else that has keys that good, with an organ engine that good, and lets you plug your iPad or Mac or whatever in for additional sounds. Want to go completely old school and ditch the interface and all that connectivity? Get a Nord Stage 3 compact and a nice 88 key controller for the bottom piano parts. Need JUST a synth? Then the Novation Summit will serve you well if you learn it and really get to know it’s architecture. So will a Korg Prologue 16. So will an OB6. It’s true a Nord Stage 3 CAN do almost any keys sound, and it allows importing of your own samples… but it’s got no sequencer, and no drums- it’s decidedly not a workstation. If someone asked me for the ideal live (or even studio) setup…I’d say a Yamaha YC88 and Novation Summit. Want more sounds? Grab an iPad an AUM and you’ve got thousands of plugins at your fingertips without having a computer. TAL-Uno-LX adds a Juno 60 to your arsenal, and it’s a measly $20 in the app stores. So…. Ridiculously long answer to your question, I know…but I don’t have an RD-2000 and wouldn’t buy one today, unless it’s someone around $2k. Even then, you can do better.

@@benallen5967 Any comment over 8 words pushes your video into trends, so, well done;) Yes, having onboard library is not longer much of an advantage. Most of these pianos (if not all) are included in the Vpiano patches of the Fantom (2019). Roland managed to make them sound good through headphones or in a mix, but they sound kind of thin through a PA. I prefer the supernatural samples than the modelled ones, although with some effort you can make them sound thicker (as there's no polyphony limitation you can layer one the the vPiano patches with the SN samples.

I have a question: I think the sound of the Korg Grandstage is very beautiful. I normally play acoustic pianos but would like to purchase a digital piano to also record some piano pieces with orchestral sound. Do you thank the Roland RD-2000 better than the Grandstage? I have the impression that the Roland sounds less beautiful. But that's just a personal opinion. Another question where I can find the answer NOWHERE. Is it possible with both to make a high-quality recording? With a stick or SD card? No mp3 but real high quality Wave files 24 bit ... I would be very happy if I could get your advice. Is the Korg Grandstage a good choice and which model would I choose best now in 2020? Thank you so much for your answer if you have some time.
@jasonsoby5563 жыл бұрын
The Korg Grandstage uses sampling from various manufacturers pianos, like most companies do. I may be wrong, but I think the Roland has many of its sounds generated by computer using math to determine the proper sound. So I guess you could say the Korg may be more authentic, but it really is in the eye of the beholder. The Grandstage is a great keyboard by a great manufacturer. The best way to make your decision is to listen to both and see which one YOU like the best. IMO, there is no "better" one.

I was considering the RD-2000 but noticed you mentioned the Korg Grand Stage for piano sounds. Any pointers? Beautiful playing btw!

Tom Coates thanks for your question! Having had quite a few stage pianos, I would say you are right at the top money wise, with what you can purchase in quality. In order, my recommendation would be the following. 1. Nord Piano 3. 2. Korg Grandstage. 3. Yamaha CP4. 4. Roland RD2000. The RD has the most midi control options and sounds -BY FAR, but it has my least favorite Piano sounds. Nord rules in that realm, and Korg has the best all around stage piano, since it can do other sounds as well, to a greater degree than the Nord Piano 3. The Yamaha CP4 is also a serious contender, and probably has my favorite just “sit down and play it” feel of all. For realism and quality of build, plus a fantastic key action, the Nord Piano 3 is my favorite. Throw in the triple pedal which gives you the pedal sounds (and comes with the Nord Piano 3) and you have the best “this is for Piano sounds and it excels at it” keyboard on the market. Thanks for your kind words!

Thanks for the reply! With that in mind, i'm going to head to a music shop which has a nord, the roland & the yamaha in stock and see which one I like the most.

In the Roland manual seems to be a bass patches-section. I've wandered back and forth through this video. But for some reason i've missed (all 25? of) them. Can anyone please point out for me where to look? Would be appreciated. Tnx!

Appreciate it. Overall it seems like Roland has upgraded some of it's SRX/ JV samplesets. Out of the box the sounds are always very useful. I love Roland for that. I'm surely going to replace my 700GX with SRX extensions with this one. Tnx Ben!

Woww mad respect. Should i buy a Nord 4 or Rd2000? I want a keyboard for home use mainly but that would impress in gigs and live performance. Also is there a newer stage piano for Roland? Or is Rd2000 newest. Thank you so much

The RD-2000 is the newest from Roland, but check out the Korg Grandstage, and Yamaha CP88 as well. Nord is fantastic, but I would buy an Electro or Stage if I wanted a Nord. The Nord Piano is hard to justify when the RD-2000 and CP88 and Grandstage exist. I love and use a Nord Stage 3, but for a Stage Piano, I have to say Roland, Korg, and Yamaha have better options. My setup, if you are curious... is a Nord Stage 3 Compact with an SL88 Grand as the bottom MIDI controller. When I got JUST Stage Piano, it is a Yamaha CP88. Awesome piano and ep sounds, and feels wonderful.

Hi, did you but the RD2000? I am thinking of... is it still a great choice or its outdated?

Daniel Kreyssig thank you! I would if I still had the RD-2000, but alas I do not.

@@benallen5967 Why did you sell it? What did you move to?
@benallen59673 жыл бұрын
@@marcusvaldes I sold it because I eventually go tired of the issues I was having with the action. That has been resolved at this point, but I finally ended up with a Nord Stage 3 compact, a Yamaha CP88, and an SL88 Grand controller. The RD is still a great keyboard, but I went in a different direction.
