Hey y’all, I’m a guitar player looking to add something like this to my studio to play piano/key parts of my favorite classic rock songs and have around for my young boys to begin learning music on. I know very little about these things, and have also found the korg krome ex88. What are the differences between that and this that would sway things one way or the other? Or are they roughly the same thing and no one as clueless as me would notice a difference for my needs? Thanks for any help 🤘🏻🎸
@nhaezer5121
@nhaezer5121 4 жыл бұрын
As far as piano sound is concerned, korg doesn't appeal to me (apart from the Korg Kronos). Their pianos are not realistic sounding - I've played the Krome many times. EPs, pads and synths are good
@ricardofryson91
@ricardofryson91 4 жыл бұрын
honestly bro... all keyboards in the same price range... are the same some sort of way... it just comes down to how they feel to you... weight/feel of the keys and the sounds they produced... for example I like roland and Yamaha more than most brands because there pianos for me have that heavy heavy weight... and the grands have a nice rich dark tone which is what I like.... I have a roland Juno ds 88 keyboard

How does it feel compared to Yamaha and Nord?
@selftrue670
@selftrue670 Жыл бұрын
@@pauldeck4500 IMO, better. Far better than the Nord and somewhat better than the Yamaha. I have never understood the admiration for Nord, particularly their action. Yamaha , of course, makes fine boards. But to me, the keys feel slightly sloppier than the Roland. All I can say is I connect with my Roland in a tactile way.
@pauldeck4500
@pauldeck4500 Жыл бұрын
@@selftrue670 Okay that's good to know. I was Nord-curious, so when I had the opportunity to get a used Stage 2 for about $1800 I sold my Yamaha P-155 and bought the Nord. The piano samples on the Nord are good (the Yamaha's grand piano sample was excellent, too -- both are about 10 years old), and I imagine today's latest models are even better because memory is cheaper. The feel of the Yamaha was a little more natural to me than the Nord. I think the appeal of the Nord (beyond the "status symbol" aspect) is the efficiency of the programming and recall features. I don't play in a praise band, but I understand why the Nord is super popular with praise-band players. One thing I don't understand is why Nord has to make it so hard to control the volume output of the organ section using an expression pedal. Maybe this has been addressed in the Stage 4.
@selftrue670
@selftrue670 Жыл бұрын
@@pauldeck4500 Yeah, I don't care for the ergonomics of the Nord at all. Small controls spread out randomly to me. The Roland does require a fair amount of menu-diving to get what you want, but once you do, it is stage-ready without fumbling around. The Yamaha is a viable option and not as pricey as the Nord. Matter of preference. I am a Roland fanboy.
@selftrue670
@selftrue670 Жыл бұрын
@@pauldeck4500 BTW, I don't believe newer samples are automatically better samples. I also own a 7 year old Roland RD-800 that compares well to anything out there today. too heavy to gig with however.

Roland covered empty niche of light-weighted, compact, professional, relatively cheap stage piano for gigging musicians in their product line-up. There is very little in common between RD88 and keyboards you have mentioned. Also, it seems there isn't a lot off competition for RD88. Already retired Casio PX5S comes to my mind and some workstation type of keyboards such as JUNO DS 88 or Korg Krome EX 88.

All of which are twice as heavy. Significantly larger, don't offer the same MainStage integration, and don't have powerful built-in amplification for smaller/ quiet gigs. To be honest my favorite aspect of built in speakers is the fact that they add to the physical feel. You can feel the sound in your fingers in a way no other keyboard can.

Roland seem to be playing a marketing trick with their description of their PH4 actions. In fact there are 3 variants: Lowest: PHA-4 Standard (RD-88) Mid: PHA-4 Premium High: PHA-4 Concert Highest:PHA-50 (RD-2000) They are allowing descriptions of various products to use “PHA-4 action” to falsely imply that pianos have better quality responses than they do because the word “Standard” can be missed out. The PHA-4 Standard action is flawed, with a clicking sound that has developed in around 20% of their devices after several months of ownership (source Roland owners forum) it’s the cheap device they use to provide escapement. I’ve owned a ton of Roland stuff over the years, but the RD-88 is to be avoided. It has cheap, wobbly plastic Jack and midi sockets, the audio interface doesn’t recognise iOS (Yamaha keyboards do) ie RD-88 does not have class compliant drivers. The menu/navigation system is a nightmare, and the speakers are a joke. Additionally, Roland have switched from sliders to rotary knobs which are really vunerable to damage and easily snap off when using a transport case (as we all do when gigging). It is nice and lightweight, but heavily overpriced as Roland have cut so many corners with this. Prices are all dropping worldwide.....for good reason. (From £1065 to £915 in the UK -Dec 2020)
