Roland's SP404MK2 is a Big Problem for Other Companies. It’s weird to give a company praise for doing the right things and actually giving the dedicated users and fans of your device what they want and then some.
But as an owner of both an op-1 and the 404, it’s kinda crazy to see this huge difference in how they view their customer.
On one side it looked like they asked for a wishlist of what an sp404 is missing, what people loved and hated and just tried to put everything into this new device. On top of that give it the same price despite massive feature expanse, cost etc. And they also updated very fast with even more things from our wishlist.
Apart from waiting for ages to get one, it’s been amazing.
Then… you have teenage engineering. They left flaws in their device for years, the price only went up and just when everybody was still trying to make sense of their recent moves, they release an op-1 successor with some of the features we always missed (not all), keep a lot of it the same and, the most important issue: ask more than double its original price for it. I’ve defended them for a while but this was the final straw for me. I love their creativity and design but this is the emperors new clothes approach.
