Repair of a dead Roland SP-700 sample playback player. The SP-700 is a classic Roland unit from 1992 that is really well liked for its quality. I wanted to dive more into the capabilities of this unit, but will save for a follow up video.
Biggest issue with mine was was the power supply, but I also discuss replacing the LCD backlight.

A very informative video about the SP-700 power supply! Thanks a lot for it. Too bad, that we can't replace the LCD 1:1. But how about a small PCB-Adapter, including a second ZIF connector? Then, we wouldn't need to unsolder the ZIF connector on the SP-700 board and could connect the new LCD with a standard ribbon cable. Only to drill 4 holes on the back of the front holder chassis opposite to the existing ZIF connector hold the PCB. Maybe we could talk about that? The Gerberfile is ready :-)

The Akaiformat that is most likely understood by the Rolands is the older S1000/1100format. The S5000 uses DOSformatted disks and wav-samples. Even S3X00series format should be different to the oldest one.

Hey there! I just bought one of these and turning it on the backlight flashes for a split second and nothing. I checked the fuses are good and the power supply is dead no 15v or 5v. Do you happen to remember where you got the power supply that fixed it? I’m guessing any power supply with 15v -15v and 5v will work. Love all of your videos! I’m a novice at electrical repair and have learned a lot from your videos! Thanks so much!

Hi, @bradthx, I really enjoy your in-depth videos and find the way you present things so eloquent. I admire your skills and have learned from your videos. 🙂 Like you, I have an SP-700, and I also have an S-760, which has a similar switch mode power supply (if I am not mistaken). My personal preference for audio gear is (high quality) linear power supplies, so I would like to replace the power supplies of the SP-700 and S-760 with linear ones; preferably external (e.g. there are external linear power supplies like Sbooster that would supply 5V/3A). I noticed there is only one cable going from the power supply to the motherboard, both in the SP-700 and the S-760. I am only a beginner so please forgive my ignorance, but do you have an opinion on how feasible it would be to connect an external power supply to this cable? Perhaps you could offer some pointers to a DIY beginner like me on how to tackle such a project? 🙂 Thank you and all the best! PS. In future videos, it would be very helpful to some of us if you identified whether the PSU of the device at hand is linear or SMPS. Thanks!

This is timely for me. I've wondered about changing power supplies. I have a Samson SM-10 that is blowing fuses. Also a TC Helicon Voice Prism that the power supply seems to be going out on. I've thought about trying to match the specs and just replacing them, since I don't really know enough to repair and I'm told, as a novice, to never mess with power.

That TDK logo is almost nostalgic. I think I only remember it from the childhood on vcr and maybe cassette players/stereo systems.

Nice work! Maybe rascsi is something for you. You can simply use cdrom images test something like this. Also, I'm suspecting that the sp700 only supports akai cdroms, not akai harddisks.

Thank you, rascsi looks interesting, I'll have to check it out. Thinking about it more, the S5000 uses a fat file system, so it would make sense that the SP700 couldn't read it. I probably also should have looked at the manual.

A lot of my E-MU gear the supply's are going high on the 15 volt side. I'm with you, switching supply's are horrible to figure out. At this point I'm going to look into just replacing all of them. I'd hate to have my rack units taken out due to high voltage from the supply.

Nice! Love the manufacture of the mounting brackets, is it a 3d printer?

That’s so interesting, again ! The resistors array solution was cool :) Do you have any reference for the backlight film ? I need to find one for a Kawai K5000R screen. The screen works but the backlight is low and make noise. So… instead of buying a 100 bucks screen, I just want to replace the backlight film. Thanks a lot ! 👌🏻
