I've watched this fantastic video so many times over the last six months before finally receiving this watch from the dealer yesterday. "It by no means has remained a watch that you will buy to wear only to time sports or a race. It has rather evolved into a watch that you would buy and enjoy as life's milestone, or at winning the race." Such a beautiful line. The thing i love with the daytona is the fact that it has the original oyster case, case that is to me way more elegant than those found on the other pro models.a real stunner.

The asymmetric case is unique and certainly an endearing part of Daytona ownership. I have the black reference ceramic bezel and it’s a joy to wear. The new “symmetric” reference does little for me and the previous versions are iconic Your reviews are always excellent

As predicted this is the best Daytona review I've seen so far. The case not being symmetrical is something I didn't notice when I once had one my wrist but was brought to my attention in one of my Rolex books. Once you've seen it its difficult to ignore...however most people will never know. Iconic yes, overhyped yes, desirable YES! Especially in white dial.

The unbalanced lugs are only present on steel, two tone, and yellow gold (metal bracelet) Daytonas. The oysterflex daytonas and the full rose/white gold (bracelet) ones have balanced lugs. Indeed a very weird design choice and I feel Rolex will solve it in the next gen Daytona.

Thanks for this awesome review... this watch looks really better in real... when i have received it i was really surprised about the size and the quality of finishing. But there is something weard is that you fell like you have something precious even if its not gold... if i was all brushed it would have been better... but as you said no watch is perfect.

I am happy to finally see a video on this subject. I had first noticed it on the previous generation 116520 and the current 116508... also it isn't so on the 116509 and 116505 which have a slightly different case and end links, which sit slightly above the lugs ☹

It's less than 39mm in diameter. Thanks I've learned something today. I was curious then measured my 214270 explorer which is given at 39mm and is in fact a 39mm. Quite intriguating the way Rolex measures and advertises their watches depending on the model.

Where do you get all of the magnificent watches you review? I don’t think you have reviewed a single watch I didn’t find to be outstanding. What ever you are doing keep it up, the watches are great and the reviews informed and interesting!! Now as for the “panda” Daytona, which I own and love, I agree with you on the odd / off balance case design but after owning it for about six months, I don’t really notice it. I also don’t mind unscrewing the pushers on the rare occasion I actually use the chronograph. Great review!!

It's interesting to note that not all current Rolex Daytona models have asymetrical cases, some precious metal modesl have symetrical ones. One must wonder... why Rolex?

It’s not just current Rolexes. Lugs have been a little thinner on the crown side for decades on several steel sports Rolexes, including old Subs and Daytonas. Well-documented.

The lug size difference don't exist in platona and gold version FYI. You can see it in their website. You can see there is a bit of metal beside the chrono pusher on the precious metal as compare to SS..Not sure why they do this..

The left and right chrono dial centers are not lined up with the dial center, 3, or 9. The old Zenith movement Daytonas had it on the same alignment.

Love the panda Daytona… speaking of symmetry, I’m surprised you didn’t mention that the 9 and 3 o’clock subdials are on a different plane from their respective hour markers. In other words, these subdials sit higher on the dial. This is likely due to limited space on the dial and makes an argument for Rolex increasing the size of the Daytona in the future. The dial is only symmetrical if you cut it in half vertically.

The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch has always had assymetrical lugs as well, and the side of the case where the pushers are is beefier as well.

Did you notice the LEC on the Daytona is different from the other Rolex watches? The oval is a double dotted lines instead of the single dotted line.

Really good bedeo! Completely agree with you on the lugs asymmetry. Really bothered me. Worst if one has keener sight, the curvature radii of the lug is also significant different. If it’s a $1000 watch, on a new platform, I wouldn’t care. But this is a 30yrs case design, for a $10g MSRP watch, and the only thing Rolex updated is just the ceramic and colors of counter in 2017? No thanks. Never regret selling this underwhelming on wrist white dial watch. Rolex should move on from the stupid screw down pushers 30 years ago. There are better options for chrono like Zenith 1/10th.

It's the size of the Daytona for me. A chronograph in such a slim case makes it so elegant. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there's another automatic chronograph in such a slim, elegant case out there.

Any Patek Philippe chronograph. Any Bvlgari chronograph. Most Lange chronograph watches. AP code, royal oak chronograph etc. If you do a bit of research, hundreds are slimmer than the daytona, although, not as robust.

Great review.Asymmetrical lugs have been a feature on SS Daytonas since the 16520 debuted in 1988. Nothing new. Just a quirk that either bugs guys or is irrelevant. What's more striking is that the sub-dials are not placed symmetrically on the dial, being closer to the 2 and 10 hour markers. The old 16520 didn't have this issue because Rolex used Zenith movements. Once Rolex switched to in-house movements with the 116520s, the sub-dials had to be placed higher on the dial. Just another quirk.

Also, at 9:06 there is some horrible looking crap all around the pin in the center of sub-dial hand. But the sub dial hand also looks black in this shot so maybe it’s a lighting effect. But that build up looks horrible. And I actually own this watch and when I put it under a loupe at 15 X the dial, the subdials, hour markers, hands, literally everything is flawless. But I am definitely seeing what you’re seeing here.

The case is not symmetrical because they are making more finger room to screw and unscrew the pushers. It's not for a visual balance but inviting easier function of the pushers.
