Hi all,
In this video, I will show you Rolex Explorer reference 214270, its macro and closeup shots, wrist view to show how it wears on my 6.5" wrist, and my personal thoughts on why I think about where its a winner and where could have been a little bettered.
I will also show you side by side clips with Rolex GMT Master ii

This is still one of the most underrated watches in my opinion. I know some people say the dial is not balanced because of the size but the elegance of the case and simplicity of the numerals and indices make it just right in my opinion. I picked one of these up right after a 116500ln and I probably wear the explorer more. Great video!

Another great coverage Hafiz. I actually was contemplating to get the older 36 ref 114270 explorer or this latest iteration at 39. In the end I opted instead to go for the OP36 ref 116000-0002 the blue dial with 3,6,9 numerical which has become my daily wear. Having said all that however I think I will still get the 214270 in the future. As a side note your editing with the music here is almost perfect. You may consider pausing a little bit longer between sentences however. Keep up the great work my friend.
@HafizJMehmood
@HafizJMehmood 4 жыл бұрын
Arief Latif that blue one is a stellar piece mate - congrats on the acquisition. I agree, this 39mm is a) very different; and b) very versatile too, especially if you want something a little more casual. Thanks so much for the feedback. I agree, the pause between sentences seems to be very short here. I actually had to cut the pauses a bit in an attempt to make the video shorter as I don’t like the video to go past 10 minutes 😅 I’m actually trying to reduce the length of video, and will aim to make them under 5-6 mins. So probably cutting the pauses isn’t helping; maybe just work on reducing the content to talk about? Any ideas will be much appreciated 😃

Great review! The only gripe I have with my MK2 is that the case isnt made for wearing it on anything else than its bracelet. Besides that the bracelet case tolerance are so small that it's really hard to safely remove the bracelet, the distance between the case and lugs is too small for even the thinnest leather straps...makes use of bent spring bars necessary, which I don't feel comfortable with. Also an almost perfect watch could be improved, if Rolex would have slimmed the relatively fat lugs a tiny bit, even thou far from looking grotesque like on the actual sub, to make the case appear slimmer, more elegant and less bulky.
@HafizJMehmood
@HafizJMehmood 4 жыл бұрын
Ummm I am guessing your trying to change the bracelet using spring bar tools? If so, try with Plier mate; that makes it as easy as spreading butter on toast, so you can change strap every day within seconds. I agree, but I think Rolex make the lugs fatter deliberately to incline it more towards modern sports looks, and don’t want to make it too formal looking or subtle. That being said, it’s still far more subtle than sub - thanks to milder proportions than maxi cases. Thanks for watching. Do checkout my other reviews too :)

@davidyule1973
@davidyule1973 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely up there, I think the Overseas is best SS 3 hander but pound for pound, being 3x price difference the Explorer could be argued to be unrivalled. I guess could then say for less than half the price can have the Tudor Black Bay 41 (smooth bezel) if basing on price, and that is a very well made watch. So could be the Overseas best and BB41 best value which would leave Rolex in no mans land?! All subjective and just playing devils advocate ;) I have two of those three and looking to add the Explorer to my collection. Less is more and the Explorer portrays that perfectly :)

I like your videos. However, I noticed that in most of them, there's quite a few pieces of dust or debris on the crystal, something that can be remedied with a wipe down or a blow tool. It would make your macro shots look cleaner.
@HafizJMehmood
@HafizJMehmood 4 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for following. I do use a lot of blowdown, wiping, brushing, and even washing of watches etc but at the macro level I go to, its virtually impossible to get rid of every single particle of dust. Many times I see dust falling on the surface at the time of clip being shot. Not that I live in dusty environment but in real world, there’s virtually no environment that had no dust or debris around. I’ll keep working on it how I can do better but rest assured, there’s A LOT of time, effort and commitment already going behind these clips to show in the way they appear. My videos are extremely high resolution and that’s another reason why you see dust as opposed to other channels that don’t offer 4K videos.
@davidd9478

Thank you for the very nice video. I am currently waiting for my Explorer I. There are two things I am a bit worried about. First is the absence of inner AR coating. I don't own any watch without AR so I don't know if that's going to be an issue for me. The second thins is, that from what I have read, the watch (especially the bezel), is supposed to be a scratch magnet. What do you think?
@HafizJMehmood
@HafizJMehmood 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the feedback. I personally don’t think lack of inner AR coating is much of a problem tbh. You can see in my macro shots that you can barely see any reflections of dial elements internally on the crystal. It mostly becomes more important for watches with domed crystal br is always nice to have regardless. It’s a shame it’s not there and even the outside of crystal doesn’t haven’t coating, but I’d personally not consider it as a deal breaker. I bezel is polished so naturally it will get scratches over time, yes. If minor scratches and swirls bother you too much on the bezel, then yeah it’s going to be a little problem. I can tell you that it’s practically impossible to not have scratches no matter what you do, due to polished surface. The hair line swirls would come in on the bezel even when your cuffs run/rub over the watch. I personally again wouldn’t consider that as a deal breaker.
@davidd9478
@davidd9478 4 жыл бұрын
@@HafizJMehmood Thank you for the reply. You are right that both things are probably not a deal breaker when it comes to buying. Minor scratches can be polished (yeah, I know it is often frowned upon) but as for the AR, it is probably the only thing I would change about Exp I. Will still buy it though.

That’d be such a great duo mate. I also don’t think they replace each other. They’re both timeless designs that have stood the test of time. I did the side by side comparison of both which I’m sure you’d like. Here’s the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNCIYNyduNTShIE.html

I did it just the opposite way. First bought my Explorer then my Sub. I now switch between wearing the two based on my mood. Hope you get your Explorer, you will love it. And, the good news is that Rolex is not raising the price of the Explorer in 2020. At least that’s the current rumor. Mark

i’m not sure I agree with you on the ‘dress’ prowess of this piece, in my view it’s no different to a sub. aside from the OP & in rolex parlance a fluted bezel is the characteristic signature of the more formal pieces (as appropriately optioned). either way, great review; I too had to have a 214270 in my collection - it’s an outstanding watch. by the way, where’s the crown etching on your crystal? I couldn’t spot it

Thanks so much for watching the video and feedback. Ummmm... the stick hour markers is another very characteristic feature to make the watch look a bit more formal. The curvy sides, I think also help, combined with thinner case, so I personally think it is easily a dress watch, and then of course, it is a professional sports with 100m water resistance. The etched crown, as you say can only be seen at specific angle and then light. That being said, check out the video at 2:45 and you will find it shining there :D

7:17 - the term “triplock clasp” is used, but I believe Triplock only applies to crown/seal technology, generally used on Rolex dive models (as well as one or two others). I think the correct term is “Oysterlock Clasp” here. For clarity, the Explorer I is not triplock crown. 7:53 - while the Rolex does pass COSC certification, COSC certification does not mean plus/minus 2 seconds. Rolexes are accurate to this level, but it’s beyond COSC standards (which I believe is wider, maybe plus/minus 5?)

Correct. Apologies. It was meant to be flip lock clasp. It’s the crown that’s triplock. Thank you.

I have a 16200 DJ at 36mm and I think it is great. That being said, the Explorer 1 is a bit sportier so I think the 39mm is a better size than the 36mm for a man. That's just me though.

Expecting detail in a $6k watch is unrealistic????
@HafizJMehmood
@HafizJMehmood 4 жыл бұрын
Correct. There’s practically no brand who goes to this much attention to detail for watches under 6k. GS is exception as they do pay a little more attention to detail but the trade off is a bracelet which is truly crap in its quality and comfort. Rolex don’t bother around attention to detail - they deliver robustness, reliability and accuracy.

It’s not a “dull” black dial. That’s the most inaccurate description I’ve ever heard of this color dial which is called satin black finish by Rolex but better known to us as a “matte” dial. This “matte” or flat black dial is the same as the Deepsea and Exp 2 and it is absolutely beautiful. It’s a throw back to the matte dials that Rolex used on it’s dive watches like the Submariner and Sea-Dwellers of the 70s which we all love. The use of the word dull is never used to express something good and in essence derailed this review because after that, no matter what happens, no one wants to look at a “dull” black boring dial. Matte dials are beautiful and in the sun look magnificent. It’s exactly one of the defining reasons I am considering this watch.
@HafizJMehmood
@HafizJMehmood 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the feedback. The stain and matte black you’re referring to is also the one on Rolex submariner. Satin and/or matte aren’t shades of colour, they are the finish of the surface. Both explorer and submariner/GMT are satin or matte and have the similar characteristic in a way that they both don’t reflect light like sunburst dials do. With the word “dull” and “deep” I am referring to the shade of colour/black and not the finish. I personally think your description of this faded black colour as “matte” or “satin” is incorrect, however I do appreciate that a different word for a faded/dull black could be used. It definitely is a faded/dull/vintage themed black shade and that’s exactly what I mentioned; and I honestly don’t know what other word would describe this shade better. If you check a Rolex website, they call both colours of black as just black, so I’ve tried to explain the difference which isn’t mentioned or clear if you limit your point of reference to Rolex website. I won’t used the work matte as shade of black, but if you have a better name for faded black colour that you can suggest, let me know and I’ll happily use it going forward, if it delivers the message I’m trying here :)

Hafiz J Mehmood the modern Submariner does not have this dial. It’s glossy black.
@HafizJMehmood
@HafizJMehmood 4 жыл бұрын
J. Taveras J. Taveras the gloss on both dials is the same mate. Checkout the close up clips especially one at 3:04 and this dial also glosses. This is the same level of gloss as you see on Rolex. You can check my review on GMT and it’s dial has the same gloss. So again, the surface finish on both, I believe is the same, and it’s only the different shade of the dial that’s different.

Wrong. Chose to buy this over the ubiquitous sub. Already owned a Seamaster and did not need or want another diver. Wanted a watch that was more versatile. It’s been my daily wearer for a few years and yes I have a Datejust and a Breguet and a JLC Reverso and a Breitling Chronomat(which I usually wear when I’m not wearing my Explorer).
