I own a polar explorer 2, and wear it a lot now. I wore larger watches for years, now I find vintage watches are what I seem to go for now. As I get older, I now appreciate smaller 40mm and under watches. They are so much more comfortable, than 42mm watches and larger. I kicked my vintage oyster in the corner for years, now I really appreciate its age, size, and comfort. If I was to buy another Rolex, it would be the GMT for sure. Great video, thanks.

Great video! I just purchased a 1993 16710 Coke and stumbled upon yours. Mine still has the green tag on the case back and the tritiums are still white which I'm just now realizing might be kind of rare for this age. Not sure about the history. I purchased it from a private party.

Great video. I have a 1675,16700 and a 116710 the 1675 is the best looking but lack of quickset date makes it a pain. The 16700 has quickset date but fixed second time zone hand and 116710 has non quickset date but independent second time zone hand. Of the three the 16700 is the best watch and movement for me in terms of ease of setting and use.

Nice video. I have no problem with having both watches. One day I'd like to add the Explorer II. It will be a little different for me because I have the GMT Master so the GMT hand is not independent of the hour hand. So you could say I actually need an Explorer II for that added function! Oh, and the Master has the acrylic crystal which scratches pretty easily so an Explorer II is in fact very necessary. Just talked myself into one with your help. Thanks. Haha. Take care, man. --Michael

This is a couple of years old, so I understand the assessment of the vintage pieces. Obvious differences in the modern versions: GMTM2 Bi-directional ceramic rotating bezel allowing for a third time zone. Polished center links on the bracelet. Explorer II fixed SS bezel allows two time zones. Also the modern size of the E2 is 42mm vs. the 40mm GMTM2. Prices have gone up drastically on both pieces as popularity has increased. Not a fan of the new Pepsi GMTM2 with the Jubilee bracelet as I prefer the Oyster. GMT Master II is around $1,000 more retail than the Explorer II.

Enjoyed the video thanks! It's also great when you go into depth about the movements, which is something I don't see on the other horology channels all that much, if at all. At the moment I own a Rolex Submariner & Rolex Datejust, both of which I love.. But because I don't own a GMT/Explorer, my opinion on this is shallow... I don't own an Explorer II for a reason. I've never liked it aesthetically. I despise the Explorer II's bezel. It's hard to justify an extra 2 grand for GMT aesthetics, I agree ... but I would opt for the GMT II everytime. Even if I were given an Explorer II for free, I don't think it would get much wrist time at all. I do like the aesthetics of the GMT II, but again I opted for a sub instead, not to mention I don't really need another GMT complication watch. As you said, mechanically, both the Explorer and GMT are extremely high quality, very sound. So I suppose it all comes down to price and aesthetics

I understand that. In the past I owned a 16610 Submariner and a two - tone Datejust. The Sub never did it for me however I really enjoyed my Datejust and I regret selling it to a degree. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Nice review. But I don't think because of the price difference there is as much a choice between them as you think for lot of people. Explorer is $4500 and GMT is $7500. That is a lot for me. I would have to wait a lot longer to by the GMT at my current rate. Or I could afford a Explorer and an Omega Man on the Moon for about the same price. Explorer is probably the best choice for someone who wants to have a Rolex. I do like Date Just, especially Turn o graph with the rotating bezel. Great job, please pay attention to prices and how that may affect budgets.

The difference is, the GMT is to be set to real GMT and the explorer has to instead be set to your other time zone and not to GMT. Because: you cannot rotate the bezel on the explorer, and so you cannot use it the way a pilot was intending to be using it. You do not seem to grasp that the GMT time is set to London time all the time for a pilot, your watch time is for where you are flying from, and your bezel time zone is where you are planning to travel to. Once you arrive at destination, you reset the watch to the current time zone where you now are. The bezel color breaks now indicate day and night times in the city you are planning to travel to and are communicating with. There are lot lots more pilots and flyers than there are cave explorers and mountain climbers. The GMT is for the Jet Set, who have girlfriends who have a Jet Set that will drive you "Batty", as the old ZZ Top song refers.

As a pilot I do not need any of these watches because my cell phone gives me the corrected time of each place, something that is useful for me is knowing the zulu time all the time and this the explorer gives it to me easily, personally I like more the Explorer specifically for being more discreet in addition to his story that goes more with my lifestyle.

If you compare Ex II and GMT black dial, the Explorer wears significantly smaller due to the different bezel which makes the dial look smaller.

Well made comparison video. I personally prefer the GMT Master based off the bezel alone. Is it worth the extra $2K or more between the two? Probably not. I feel like the GMT Master II has had a following for some time now where the Explorer seems to be slowly catching on as a big option in the Rolex world. Any chance of you ever going after an Air King? Or even getting your hands on one for review? I really like the new Air King 116900 despite many hating it. I feel like it has a great "cool" factor and outside the box styling that Rolex doesn't do a lot of. I'm scared to actually put one on my wrist because I think it will end up having a spot in my watch case haha.

In the current Rolex range my favourite would have to be the Air King, I wasn't sure at first because I really like the simplicity of the old model but I think it's going to be a design classic in years to come.. it doesn't have the magnifying cyclops - which I personally have never liked, or something like that dreadful lightning bolt second hand that in my opinion ruined the Milgauss. That said, for a piece of really classy wrist furniture I'd find it difficult to decide between the new Air King or a Grand Seiko springdrive.

I don't know what it is with this video, but I think the picture was sharper than ever before. No blur around any objects and the colours just popped, especially that royal purple top! I don't hanker after either of these watches, but the comparison was fair and so on point, it must help those people who do hover between the Explorer and the GMT. This I'm sure was the aim of your video; to help people see the differences and decide wisely. From a personal point of view, I hope you move off Rolex soon and back into other watches, or do some comparisons between Rolex and other watches that offer similar capabilities. That would interest me more. Just saying, is all.

The GMT Master costs more because, like the Sub, it is a ‘look at me’ Rolex because of the coloured bezel, and is chosen by those who still want to be noticed (for wearing a Rolex) but stand out from his/her Sub companions. It’s a fad thing. Few people buy a Sub or a GMT and really know what’s going on under the bonnet. It’s all about the image it creates for the wearer. The ExpII is the (pardon the pun) polar opposite. It is the Rolex sports watch chosen by those who don’t want to be noticed, but who want a Rolex Sports Ref as they appreciate the watch, it’s construction and it’s history. So one (or two, if you include the Sub - and indeed now the latest Daytona) is for those who want to pose, the Exp II is for those who want to wear/use. In the main. Always exceptions to the rule, but in the main it is the fad for Rolex coloured bezels that governs their price. When I bought my 16750 I had the option to buy the GMT and chose not to because it was too loud, too obvious. Everyone wants to be seen these days (Instagram and KZfaq generation) so any Rolex with coloured bezel helps with that image. And for many it’s their only luxury watch so they want people to ‘know’ they’ve succeeded in getting one. Like certain cars, brands of clothes etc.

I recently picked up a Explorer II Black Dial, should be here tmrw. I had the Polar and sent it back. Just wasn't me, as I have a pale skin tone. Really looking forward to the Black however, the poor man's GMT Rolex.

+Longbow072 just 3 weeks ago I bought the black explorer II at the Hongkong airport and they had fortunately also a GMT ceramic to compare and I only took the explorer coz of the price and I've a deepsea blue already but honestly I'm wearing the explorer much more than the deepsea already. I just felt in love with the seize even I've pretty huge wrists and it's more comfortable too

good to see you using the GMT as it should be and not like the dumbass owners who set both time the same. what the point having GMT. stand by for people telling you to cut your nails. I leave mine long just to annoy tolls, it drives them crazy.

Lol great use of a GMT. Then again, how many people are buying a Submariner and actually taking it diving? Or an Explorer for their next cave expedition?

chr1s60 Me! I use my seadweller and sub when I go diving. I use my GMT as it was design for because I travel alot for work. Don't have explorer and don't go cave exploring but if I did and I had an Explorer I would use it as it was intended. I have 2 suunto and gshock which I use when hiking. Check out my Instagram you'll see the photos of me doing the Three Peaks Challenge. Only a dumbasses buys a watch just to show off to people. Look at me i have experience watch 😕😕😕. Btw I don't have a Omega moon watch, no plans to go I'm scared of the mice on the moon and cheese is fattening.

I applaud you for that. Although I am not a diver, the ones I have known that actually take mechanical dive watches with them do so strictly as a back up to the newer high tech devices one can wear for diving and most will wear a cheaper dive watch like a Seiko before they would take their Rolex. I don't think their is anything wrong with buying a watch and not using it for the intended purpose it was designed for, as long as you are buying it for you and not to try and show it off or impress people. I was just kinda pointing out that many don't use their watches for the so called intended purposes.

You could've bought some better editing software lol. But that's not you. You go out and buy a new computer!

Oh ok, so you needed a new computer anyway. Yeah, I am considering that too but I just invested about $400 in Vegas Pro 14 Suite (The Upgrade. The regular Price is $799). I consider this an investment in the future as my software kind of reached the limits of what I wanted to do or could do. Not ready to jump ship yet.

I get it, I now have three editing programs and three computers...I've lost my mind. I have i-movie, filmora and DaVinci resolve. I keep getting stuck where I want to do more than I can.

I know what that's like. I tried a few too. Although I would just get Final Cut Pro and be done with it. iMovie is ok for most people but your videos are pretty complex sometimes and I think you want to grow as a videomaker, so I would really suggest Final Cut Pro.

You don't know why the GMT MASTER costs more 2nd hand?! You don't deserve to own one then and you're a fool to pay more for one over the other. And only recently has the GMT got a bit of a following?! This is nonsense. You shouldn't be making videos either if that's your opinion. Spend more time researching and less time talking rubbish please. Over 57k people have watched this misinformed crap.
