Are you kidding? It was *all* patronising. Every voiceover the same, bog-standard, southern English public school accent. So stuffed up with British social class. And what they were selling really was so much crap, too. Bad food, bad drink; rubbish household implements; just cheap, nasty, tat. Most of the things sold in these adverts no longer exist - for good reason.
@numberstation
@numberstation 2 ай бұрын
Blimey, you’ve got yourself worked up over a few old adverts, haven’t you? “Every voiceover had a bog standard, southern English public school accent.” Having just watched it, I’d say there were about 7-8 of those, along with half a dozen fake American, a few northern English, and a couple of Irish, Scottish and working class London each. One of them was Henry Cooper, hardly a public school accent. The rest were neutral. As for “Most of the things in these adverts no longer exist”, you’re completely wrong: most of them still do.

Having had a father who worked as an advertising executive, and witnessed his career disappear due to maggies own spin doctors,ie Saatchi and Saatchi , what a lot of folks dont know is that back then these ideas came out from lunchtime drinks seshs and "brainstorming" in a small office of 2 or 3 folks of an afternoon, not from data analysis of applied psychologists !

Back when ads were only around 20 seconds long and not miniature epics that seemed to go on forever. A time when it was assumed that women did the housework and the only drag in sight was someone puffing on a cancer stick! Ads for bras aimed at women with flat chests convincing them to buy their products instead of getting their tits artificially blown up! Booze ads aimed at the dads. What do we have now? Ads for: Death insurance Medical negligence claims Diesel scam claims Mis-selling scams Cancer charities Disaster aid charities Water charities Online gambling Incontinence pads Bog cleaners Haribo sweets which under no circumstances must feature its intended market (children) Electric cars and definitely not petrol or diesel. Today is crap.

Did people really do a full shop at their local Spar? I find that hard to believe. It's always been to me the sort of place you would go to if you wanted to get a few bits.

You're forgetting that a lot of women didn't have cars in the 70's. So yeah, they did the whole shop in Spar, just because it was easier and local (and quite dear)

Also supermarkets didn’t exist every few hundred yards like today. We had to go to the green grocer, butcher, fishmonger, and market if there was one.

I often wondered where that cringeworthy advertising watchword "moreish" came from and had always assumed it was a 90s abomination. Now I learn that Mr effing Kipling was responsible in the 70s.
