When I first started the Scorpion Crawler build I didn't know much about roll cage design, but I learned a lot on the way. In this video I'll share with you 17 tips to build a better roll cage.
Roll Cage 101:
•Roll Cage Design depends on your specific sport.
•If you intend on racing, get SCORE book or build for your specific racing guidelines.
•Don’t build a roll cage just to protect the body… that is not a roll cage, a roll cage is for the occupants safety.
Tube
•Welded (aka) HREW
•DOM- Drawn over Mandrel 2x the cost of HREW
•Chromoly?
Size
•1.75” .120 wall standard for Jeeps/Buggy's
•Triangles are used on bridges for a reason, use triangles, not fancy curves or plain squares.
•Avoid Bends, if you have to make a bend, think about a support at the apex of the bend.
•A tube should never end at a T on another tube, an impact will just bend the other tube.
•Gusset corners with triangle plates or an A shape of tube for strength.
-What is an A,B,C, and D pillar?
•Try and keep A&B pillars vertical and top leaned back too far… which will weaken the structure.
•Ingress and Egress
•An inverted V is the strongest type of windshield spreader.
•The B hoop should have an X in it for support and a horizontal bar for your harness.
•The top of the harness bar should be about level with the top of your shoulders for safety.
•If you have multiple joints coming together, weld each tube first before adding the next tube.
•Attach seat belts and seats to the roll cage, especially if the roll cage is not welded to the frame.
•Consider bars over your head in case of a rollover onto rocks and trees but also keep plenty of headroom.
•Consider what will happen if you pass out and arms and legs start flailing.
•All tubes should ultimately connect to the frame OR be welded to sandwiched plates to a solid point on the body.
•If welding to the frame, consider a landing plate to increase weld area and strength.
•Tube splices should always be sleeved and rosette welded, not just butted together.
•Put thought into impacts and try to visualize where the stresses will travel.

ahh I see, ya that one I had for over 16 years and it slowly evolved over time... it's much harder to build it right that way. Defiantly makes things better when you can plan the rig from start to finish and build it all within a shorter time frame.

When tying the cage floorboard plates in, when you weld in the plates to the frame, never weld all 4 corners to the point of them being a full wrap weld. At each corner, leave about an 1/8"-3/16's on the corners not welded. A hard impact can cause the unibody to crack around the weld. At this point, it will just connect the dots to the point of the cage plate coming off the Frame.

I have a '92 Wrangler YJ, 2.5l 4cyl.. I just bought a new starter recently because of the same thing.. It left me stranded at the park but all of my lights and everything else worked. I just had oil in my starter, but I fixed the leak. This time, it blew a 50 amp alt pwr.2 fuse and also the 10amp I.O.D fuse as well.. I replaced them, and now nothing comes on, my headlights, guage lights and even my guages dont work. I've tested my battery and its not dead. I tried crossing the poles on the starter to try to start it, it acted like it wanted to crank but it started making a sound like boiling water makes so I unhooked it from fear it'd catch fire. Any suggestions? I need help as soon as possible. I've already checked my fuses and relays and they're all good. Another question, if it was my starter.. how could it affect my guages and lights the way it did.

great video ! i sure did enjoy it , only thing is is that we never wear seat belts in our buggies. our rigs are a bit different than most but we also ride in ALOT of spots that are cliffs on either side . so in the unlikely case that we roll we need a chance to jump out before we roll off a 150 foot cliff .

chromoly is usually used for applications where weight savings is important like aircraft, formula SAE and Baja SAE, which is what I do. It's not any lighter than welded or DOM but it's stronger so you can use thinner wall and smaller diameters

How do you reccomend tying an interior cage into an xjs frame rails? I've seen guys on pirate do the plate to the body and then from the underside plate come over to the frame rail with a piece of tube to another plate.
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 7 жыл бұрын
that sounds like a good idea, or possibly just cut a hole in the body and come down to the frame rail... but your other idea might be a bit stronger. Just make sure to add frame stiffeners first or something better to weld to than the original frame rail.

for solid tubing id suggest 4130 chromally steel. its what I use for bmxing and the tubing is damn near impossible to dent for slamming into a concrete or steel ledge every once in a while and the frame was a 2009 special still going strong. my last bike was an aluminum frame and the whole head tube snapped without warning not even a year into just learning how to do some basic tricks and I'm only 160 pounds wet so that frame was garbage lol

benson420710 BMX is way different then rock crawling in rock crawling you take way harder hits so what's good in BMX ( where you need strong and light to do tricks) is different then rock crawling (where strong is more important then weight). Now I'm not hating on you I'm just pointing something out
@benson4u215
@benson4u215 7 жыл бұрын
I understand where you're coming from for the fact one weighs 10 times the other ,now I'm wondering how those 15-20mph crashes into concrete and steel ledges compare to rock crawlings slow but heavy impacts. ive seen the same parts on different bikes survive being ran over and it really matters how good the forging process is, in my case 4q "deathbaked" 4130 CrMo thats not even 4mm thick and you could use a 16lb sledgehammer to barely leave scratches. I do not know honestly that much at all about building a cage but more of what metals can stand from stupidity
