@PetrolJunkie
@PetrolJunkie 2 жыл бұрын
@Dick Weed I mean…. I have no idea how to respond to a comment that makes so little sense. A half helmet is only slightly better than no helmet given that the majority of injuries are to the exposed face of the rider. It makes no sense at all to wear one.🤦‍♂️ Whereas one foot down is what every single country outside the US teaches as a basic skill. Only an American can insist that two feet is somehow better. It’s like insisting on using training wheels all the time. I’d prefer to cover my brake and have a foot down even if I where seven feet tall. Also, not be limited to hand full of cruisers that can’t do what I want to do on a motorcycle because I have a 28 inch inseam. 🤷‍♂️ How are those two things even remotely related?

I was a bike messenger for many years. The move is the same on a bicycle. It is more efficient than mounting by throwing a leg over and then moving forward AND it definitely looks cooler to roll up to a coffee cart with a smooth ass "cowboy" dismount! 😂

Bret: thanks for this. I was recently in an event with you and asked you a question during the intermission. You thought it was a good question to address to the whole group and asked me if i could hold on and ask at the end of the event during Q&A session so everyone could benefit. It is unrelated to this video, but here it goes: most luggage manufacturers (at least Triumph branded likely produced by Givi) post a 10 lbs weigh limit on panniers. Depending on what you are filling it with, feels like you can hardly get it half full before you are there. I try to not pass the limit, and if I do, at most by 10-20% tops. Also, I pass a bit because I mostly do road riding with light offroading so I'm not subjecting the paniers or it structure to a lot of forces. But I'm starting to get a bit more adventurous. I know rule number one is to pack light so I try. But can you help us understand why the weight limits are so small, and what guidance can you give if we get close to it or around and get worried about it? What risks should we know about? Thanks!

May 2022 update: I have now managed to do this "cowboy" start consistently. The issue I was having with my knee was do to the fact that I was trying to swing my leg up over the seat right away without standing on the peg until the bike straightened itself. This put a lot of stress on my knee causing me to abandon trying anymore. When I finally paid attention to how Brett and others were doing it, an 'ah ha' moment happened and now I do it with no pain 🙂 Lesson learned! Wait for the bike to balance with you leaning over the seat, THEN swing your leg over. It's bloody bazaar. I can do the dismount no problem. Matter of fact I let the kickstand going down kill the engine then let the bike lean on the stand as I walk away all "poser" like :-) Where I have big trouble is the rolling mount. I know it's just a matter of practice but for some reason , attempting this really causes pain in my left knee. That would make sense if I had ongoing knee problems , but I don't. The other odd thing is that I can complete "the action" while static on the center stand with no pain at all? Yet , while moving , it causes pain. I must admit that I do hop a couple times during the transition and I imagine this is the issue. I just can't do it enough to not need the hopping because I can't practice it without causing pain. I'm thinking of trying it from the right side to see what happens. Any advice would really be appreciated.

Good fun Bret! It is especially fun when it goes wrong (for another rider of course!) like when they start off, swing their leg over but catch their boot on the panniers or top bag/rack, then panic and lose their balance and crash. Extra points for falling to the right over the bike in front of the other riders. Or when coming to a stop and they put the stand down but it just drags in the dirt enough to fold up when they step off the bike and the bike falls over. Bonus points if the falling bike knocks the rider down too! Not that things like that ever happen to me... Now, how about a video on "How to crash Without getting Injured"? 3 years ago in a low speed slide I had to lay the bike down but my knee decided to bend sideways instead of back. Torn MCL ended my riding for the year early in the season and now I wear knee braces. This year my riding season ended a few weeks after the snow melted when I was on my first dirt ride and had a low speed high side and I made the mistake of (automatically) putting my hands out to break the fall and dislocated my shoulder joint. I know I should cross my arms over my chest and roll with the fall but the information didn't go from my brain to my arms. I'm 67 and have ridden all my life, I don't ride fast anymore and I enjoy riding slower and actually see what I am riding through instead of focusing on how fast I can ride trail. Both of my injuries would have been very serious if I had been a long way from anything. In both cases I was able to ride out and make my way home before going to the doctor. But how much better if we could practice how to fall without getting injured (seriously).

I have a 30 ish inch inseam and ride a KTM 390 Adv, which has a 33 ish inch seat height. When I go camping I have my Mosko Moto Reckless 80 loaded up and it sticks up about 12" above the pillion. At that height I have trouble swinging my leg with all my gear and I can't get the hang of threading my leg sideways between the tank and the seat. I use these techniques all the time to mount/dismount as it's the easiest way to mount IMHO and there have been times where I don't have a choice because I can't get the stand down, I'm in sand, etc. To me that upgrades them from poser skills to required skills.

When attempting the rolling dismount with side stand flick, pay careful attention to where that side stand is going to touch down. It doesn't look nearly as impressive when, as happened to a mate of mine, the stand disappears into a grating and you end up on the ground waiting for onlookers to stop laughing for long enough that they can lift your bike off your trapped leg. 😉

A few weeks ago I tried the mount as you go thing. Dropped the bike. lol. I didn't have the tips of leaning forward as well as into the bike. Guess I'll have to practice it some more.

I roll in to the dismount on my K1600 and flick my stand down before the stop. I always make sure I check it twice though. In rough terrain, theres always the chance of hitting something after pre kicking the stand before the dismount and having it pop back which could end up in a dump due to overconfidence,

I do the same thing getting on my KTM 500 as my right hip is a bit dodgy, also the dismount is cool as well if you combine it with a stoppy and spring off when the suspension unloads. The only thing I dont do is have my helmet strap stick out the back of my neck as that's not a cool look ;) LOL

Be aware that the sidestand is made for the weight of the bike only, not more, and they break easily..
