Out of Time and Take It or Leave It are amazing tracks. It baffles me why they would take out those songs from the US version. Same with Mother's Little Helper.

the uk version, because it has mother's little helper and the long version of out of time, but the american version flows nicely, especially with going home stuck at the end of the album.

You are absolutely correct . The best way forward is buying the U. S. Aftermath , and Flowers . That way you get all of the songs . Just comparing the Aftermath albums , I take the opposing view . My preference is for the U S version on both fronts , the art & the music . I think that the cover is kind of a response to the Beatles’ Rubber Soul cover with the elongated faces . I also like the picture on the U S version better . As for the music . The inclusion of the great Paint It Black , far outstrips the value of the loss of the other songs . And with Flowers , you have the best of both worlds . Both versions , however , give us the criminally underrated I Am Waiting .Thanks !

I bought the mono box and it really improved my opinion of both versions, which was already high. I can't stress enough how good they sound in mono. My appreciation for "Goin' Home" also grew, mainly because it dawned on me that such a long musical vamp probably influenced bands like the Doors and the Stooges.

@@JackRascal Now that you remind me, I read that in a Love bio. If true, I still think Going Home is the better track, it resonates for me beyond being just a long jam, evoking the sense of distance and alienation that runs through Aftermath. I do love Love (💗), especially the Elektra period.

It was 1966, and later-famous guitarist Buzz Feiten and I were high school buddies heavy into the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. His Dad Howard Sr., an airline pilot, indulged Buzzy's love of music by bringing him first-presses of their albums. Buzzy really blew my mind by getting me the April '66 UK version of the Stones' 'Aftermath' album! The US version, minus some really good songs, would not be released until July!

To me, the album cover is one of the few areas I support the US version. It has the subtle early psychedelic feel to it almost. (Also, I think Goin Home works really well as the last track on the album). But in the end, the UK version has Take It Or Leave It, Out of Time, What To Do, and Mothers Little Helper. I can live with the loss of Paint It Black for those songs to all be on this one album.

There were probably some engineering reasons for shortening the US version as well. If you try to jam too many grooves in to accommodate a longer album the sound gets compressed, especially the bass, in part to keep the needle from bouncing out of the groove.

US cover is way more striking with all the members beautifully lined in front of a black background. It's hypnotizing. I like how there's a bit of an empty space to make the titles more subtle and not over the top. It does the job and the black space makes the whole thing seem more psychedelic along with the falling band members under it with their colorful clothes.

Aftermath, the one and only is the album released in April in Great Britain. The "American Edition" is a commercial pastiche released two months later that combines an abridged version of Aftermath and Paint it Black. It's not about which is better, it's clear that in this case the real record is the UK version.

It's worth noting the original US mono issue of the album was a fold-down - if you're going vintage US, stick with stereo, but the box set LP is thankfully true mono, making it essential!
@johnryan3913
@johnryan3913 Жыл бұрын
The American edition is superior, as they usually were. The albums were frequently recorded in the US and geared to the US market. Structurally Paint it, Black is a superior opener, and Going Home is certainly the only way to close the album. The cover too is superior in the US. The pictures on the UK edition were reconfigured for the excellent Flowers. The UK leftovers were used on Flowers, which also should have had Sad Day, the haunting What to Do, and Who's Driving My Plane instead of the reruns Ruby Tuesday, etc. Finally I do love the Stereo mix first, the mono mix second. And wasn't the artwork for Could You Walk on the Water? used on High Tide and Green Grass? Love the show, and the look of the show. Finally I am so glad that growing up we had 12x5, Now!, and Out of our Heads in the US editions - each has its own distinct identity. Plus December's Children is like their punk album!

That UK cover is really iconic, I love everything about it. In a way I think Paint It Black is too "big" a track for the album. It kind of undermines the overall piece.. like having 13 (really good) album tracks, and then dropping "Satisfaction" in the middle.

UK for me, as the band intended it to be released. The exclusion of several great tracks like Mother´s Little Helper, Out of Time, Take or Leave it and Think hurt the American version IMO, even it having "Paint it Black". Same goes for Between the Buttons. UK for me, with Back Street Girl as the definitive reason why.

I have to wonder about a 50-minute-plus running time for the UK version. For LPs, about 20 minutes is ideal for one side in terms of fidelity. Much over that and you're cramming the grooves together and especially diminishing bass reproduction. But hey, none of that matters because I stick to CDs - I've got the Abkco remasters of both the US and UK Aftermath on CD, and they sound terrific. As the legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder said when he was digitally remastering his recordings for Blue Note (which were originally released on vinyl), "Vinyl was never any good," primarily because it adds so much distortion. Some folks prefer to call this distortion "warmth." But this "warmth" is not on the original master tapes.

For me, the only way to listen to Aftermath is the UK version, and you start with Track 4. Tracks 1-3 can easily fit in on Between the Buttons, theme and how they sound. This let's the album start w Under My Thumb, and is an incredible album throughout, more a precursor to Beggars. Yes this makes track 3 eleven minutes long, but it flows perfectly. Paint it Black sounds nothing like the rest of Aftermath, is a stand alone single for good reason. It doesn't need take it or leave it, so leave it. I also recommend the mono box. My biggest issue w aftermath is they needed to choose one: the first goth album w paint it Black, another between the buttons (mother's helper, lady Jane) or a precursor to Beggars. Most of the tracks fall into the third category.

And growing up, after buying SF, LIB, Exile, and Goats, I went back and bought the earlier LPs more or less chronologically. Generally i think the US versions are structured more thoughtfully. Love flowers, but they could have replaced the three reruns with UK-only/or b-sides and the whole thing would be new. Patti Smith wrote Flowers "is for lovers and loners..." Nice.

For me, the U.S. version is the better one. The basic reason is that it has "Going Home" as the final track on side 2, while the British version has it at the end of side 1. Sorry, but you don't put an ELEVEN MINUTE-PLUS track in the MIDDLE of an album! Whoever thought of such a sequence must have been... well, you can guess my adjective. Plus, I actually prefer shorter albums (35 to 45 minutes) to longer ones (50 to 60 minutes); after all, it's quality, not quantity that ultimately matters.
