I've just this minute heard that Charlie has died aged 80. What a life he's led and his fabulous contribution to Jazz & Rock n' Roll. Keith will be heartbroken for sure. Condolences to his family & friends. Thanks Charlie. Wise decision to join the Stones in Jan 1963.

I met him in Manhattan circa 1975 while buying a nice pair of Italian boots at a place called Chelsea Cobbler. ( Charlie must have selected 8 or 9 pair of slightly less flashy shoes ). We chatted for a minute & yes he seemed so unaffected by it all. So very real and genuine. We won’t see his like again…

Charlie shows a reflective and thoughtful nature and not a trace of arrogance, and he has grown into a very stylish and mature man, not at all in the tradition of old rockers who never grow up. Charlies Watts is a class act and a great drummer, someone young people can emulate. You don't have to be trashy to rock like hell.

Charlie Watts married his wife Shirley two years before this, and to this day, they're still married. Fifty-two years.

He was so refined, low-key and straight-laced for a drummer.

He was like the glue that held the Stones together, solid as they come... One hell of a drummer. I bet he never thought in a million years, the Stones would turn out to be as historic as they are. The lovely girl on the horse is Charlie's wife Shirley, they had a daughter Seraphina, and were married for almost 60 years...Love, prayers, and respect to your girls. Impossible not to admire Charlie Watts! In previous interviews I've heard him state " I'm not a Rock Star at least I don't buy into the hype. I see myself as a jazz drummer who happens to be a drummer/musician in a Rock N Roll band". It is impressive he's been married throughout his long career with the Rolling Stones and faithful to his misses. Tom Jones is another story. The best Tom can come up with is " I have been unfaithful throughout most of my career but at the end of the day all roads lead back to Linda" In another interview Charlie was congratulated for his 25 years working with the Stones. Charlie said 5 years working and 20 years of waiting. Humble man who speaks his mind very effective!

A deep and reflective interview which opened up Charlie Watts Soul to some extent. He was essentially a Home Bird and a family man who was loyal and faithful. Unique in the Rock and Roll scene. . A short clip of his wife on her horse which added a touching moment too.

Charlie: great drummer, musician and good guy. I wish I could meet him and just listen. I'm a rhythm guitar player and play with the drums and bass and it works out well. Charlie is always in my mind when I'm playing. Thanks Charlie!

Thanks so much for sharing this, a really great interview with my favorite Stone. 'Got to love Charlie's timeless, down-to-earth attitude. I think his awareness of his circumstances in comparison to that of the world's at large is laudable given that so many of the most fortunate try so desperately to either downplay their success, or insult our intelligence by claiming their lives somehow remain as before despite fame (How could anyone's life NOT change given those circumstances!). As to his further assessment regarding race and music of the time, as a black woman, I have to agree that the racial and physical appeal of the British bands(sexy, young, white men playing music borne of the life's experience of old, black men in this country) undoubtedly made it more palatable to a white audience at the time (as did The Motown Sound, I'm sure, ironically enough). A lovely, cerebral man, five decades after this in-depth interview, Charlie reminds me of fine wine, getting only better with time.

I'll be honest. I never followed the stones but I have watched many videos recently on Charlie's passing. He had such a thoughtful calm presence about him. A gentle soul indeed on top of being a superb musician.
