It was cool of David to email you his close-up photos and firsthand account of The Stones’ performance at Jazz Fest. (He has got to be the funniest commenter in our Alan Rosenberg Show community! Sometimes, his comments on your videos make me laugh out loud.) Not having David’s luck of being at the concert, I was relegated to watching it on KZfaq. Still, I enjoyed it. I was especially happy to hear the great “Whole Wide World.” For me, the back-to-back performances of “Let It Bleed” (which has always been a treat for me in concert) and “Time Is On My Side” were the highlights of the show. As you pointed out, The Rolling Stones always give credit to the old blues/soul singers who preceded them in recording particular songs. (The only other artist I’ve ever seen do that in concert, and in general, is Bonnie Raitt.) It was fun watching Mick and Irma Thomas sing together. I appreciate your insight in bringing up how The Stones’ music playing leadership has now shifted from Keith to the rhythm section. It’s a very different dynamic, which probably was necessary because Keith just doesn’t have the guitar playing ability that he used to. If you thought Ronnie’s solo on “Tumbling Dice” was, shall we say, “lacking,” then I think you’ll agree that Keith’s solo on “Sympathy for the Devil” was embarrassing. I don’t know if his poor playing is a result of lingering effects from COVID, worsening arthritis, degeneration from age or something else. I do know that it makes me sad to see. As for Ronnie, I hope that his cancer has not come back or that some other terrible thing has not occurred to cause his decline in playing. From watching both “Hackney Diamond” concerts, I believe that the absence of good guitar solos needed for certain classic songs has greatly diluted those songs. I think it’s a testament to the excellence of those songs that they even sounded as good as they did. Above all else, it is proof that Mick Jagger is incredible, carrying the band the way that he does. I still think his vocals are strong, despite the unavoidable effects of aging. To me, the concerts in both Houston and NOLA were the Mick Jagger Show. And a damn good show it was!

Oh Rona - I love your comments as always. I'm totally with you, and you explain it better than me. It is apparently from the videos (without actually see the show live yet) a different sounding Rolling Stones. And the "degeneration" with the guitar abilities, is sad. I don't want to come down to hard, as it's a miracle they're still out there, with their age, health issues, and health degeneration. It's a blessing. But with that said, as lifetime fans, it would be a disservice to ignore some of the obvious. Mick is a miracle. I'm tired just watching him and he's got 20 years on me...lol. I'm hoping, they rebuild some strength and get stronger as the tour progresses. I'm glad I'm going regardless. And yes it was so awesome of David - he is a riot, so glad he's on the channel and it's great to hear from people who are actually there.

Thanks for the shout-out, Alan. You said my last name right!! That's doesn't happen that often. Ok, what I meant about Sweet sounds was that there is that false ending and then they come back and finish it off. Here, it stopped. There wasn't a false ending. I noticed that Keith was sitting at the beginning of Gimme Shelter too. I think there is something to this COVID talk. Jeff Landry is our new very conservative governor. He's trying to undo liberal laws and policies. So, Mick was ribbing him for his sending Louisiana backwards. The show definitely improved Little T&A onward. It's definitely a different sound on this tour, at least so far. I will be seeing the Atlanta show too. We'll see what changes happen between now and then. I'm looking forward to Neil Young and Crazy Horse tomorrow!!

I'm seeing them in Vegas a week from today so i have been paying attention to the setlists. I'm a lifelong die hard fan and I have never seen them live. I'm a little worried about the setlist because I was hoping they would do Depending on You, Get Close, Driving Me too Hard or Bite My Head Off. 3 songs from Hackney isn't enough. The main songs I want to hear are Beast of Burden, Tumblin' DIce and Out of Time.

Great review of the New Orleans gig. You can say anything you want about The Rolling Stones performances these days but the bottom line is "they play live" and that's all you can ask. Thanks for the comments and insight Alan. I don't mind saying that I guess my prediction a while back is turning out to be the case for this tour--scant set list, peppered with basically one deep cut; a perfunctory two songs from the new album; shorter show time, with no 'b-stage' set of any consequence; and very few musical surprises, in terms of either arrangements or changes. Look, I don't expect them to set up a half circle of bar stools and do 'Sitting on a Fence' and 'Sweet Virginia', but after making the b-stage a signature part of their shows for 25 years, why completely neglect it now, save for some token visual? And though I agree in theory that a 'stadium' show is going to be tailored differently than a theater, or indoor arena, I'm not so sure a semi-acoustic b-stage set would be all that impossible in an outdoor stadium with 50,000 people. I mean, Lep Zep did that during all of their tours, and it worked very well, even in large venues. Yes, different era, and different audience, but even if the Stones did a blues, or acoustic based mini-set--three, four songs at most--I think it would give the tour and show a much more substantial feel--rather than the 'wash/rinse/repeat' greatest hits sets, which is what this looks to be shaping up as. I mean, I could see a two-hour set--followed by a pair of encores, but 18 songs, even with a stretched out Miss You, doesn't seem like much music for these guys. As for Keith, I would be very disappointed if we do not get the standard two songs--no Happy or Before They Make Me Run--which define Keith's renegade credo?????--would be a let down...unless he does Tell me Straight in addition to T & A. I too have begun to wonder about his physicality in recent years, he just looks very rickety, even trembly. I have heard in other forums that he has serious issues with his shoulder/upper arm (arthritis/tendonitis)--not unusual for a guy who has played for so long with his characteristic jack hammer technique--and maybe the only correction is a shoulder replacement, which is no easy feat for a 60 year old, let alone 80. I even recall the last time I saw them, at Soldier Field in 2019...you just didn't get as much of his signature riffing as you used to. I too am excited that they are playing 'Rocks Off'--but that song lives on his locomotive chug--if he cannot provide that, I wonder what it will sound like? And Ronnie has always been, IMHO, a dynamic and inventive lead player in concert. Yes, he never had quite the improvisatory lyricism as Mick Taylor in his prime, but I thought he always sounded great--whether it was slide, tearing up the Strat or on the Tele b-bender. And are folks saying we're not even getting that now?? What gives?

I’m actually pretty upset right now. At work. But quickly saw that they dropped Out Of Time. No Get off of My Cloud. No Rocks Off. . Setlist even more perfunctory. Maybe I’ll do a quick video tonight. Maybe I’ll partly quote you too if ok. I’m bummed.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Oh, ...is this the show after New Orleans?? Feel free to quote me anytime, Alan, I greatly admire your work and content, so by all means. Was this in Atlanta?? Or Did they do two shows in Houston?? Again, I have to think about the physicality of the three core members--yes, Mick is a genetic marvel, but I don't know if he is dancing and gyrating as much as he used to, and he is in better shape than...anyone. And I've thought that Keith and Ron have been "taking better care of themselves" of late--back in 2019, I did not see a single cigarette, beer or whiskey bottle on the stage.

thanks so much. As you said, and I totally agree, considering their age - I mean Mick's gonna be 81 - it's beyond belief - it's indescribably incredible that they're still going and performing at such a level. And the fact that The Stones actually play and sing LIVE, and virtually no other band is still doing that - is praise worthy to the utmost. I would much rather hear actual live music that is subpar than hear a fake show. And today it's very hard to tell. But as a die hard Stones fan - my favorite band of all time - I still have to be honest in their performance. If everything is the best, if everything is great....than nothing is great. That's my feelings. I haven't seen these shows live - just from videos, and as I state, it's not really fair to totally assess - but I do my best. I welcome opinions from the fans that are there. I look forward to the show I'll be seeing later this month. Thanks so much for watching and your comments. Best, Alan

The recent "busts" of so many more artists caught lip synching is a DISGRACE. The Eagles - if I paid hundreds of dollars to see that sham - I mean ridiculous they ever continued after Glenn Frey, but even so - they're famous for their harmony vocals etc - and its fucking fake!!! Ban Them - Ban them all - even Joan Jett - so many others - this is a joke!!!!! God bless The Stones for at least being real - perhaps their performance due to their age and physical disabilities can be a bit subpar on occasion - at least it's REAL!

if it’s true that Keith really is recovering from Covid, and that being the reason he only gets one song then hopefully the upcoming shows he gets 2 as I hope he makes a full recovery, but with that being said, yes, I absolutely do notice Keith has taken a back seat thus far in this tour, on the sixty tour he looked more out there and lil bit more active and moving but here so far he looks tired, and I really do think that truthfully it’s partially due to Charlie not being there, he was Keith’s anchor, and Keith really did seem more alive with Charlie being there and it’s quite sad not seeing him be himself without his mate, but Keith usually or occasionally sits down on gimme shelter, he’s done it a couple times on intimate or special occasions, like the performance at Hollywood hard rock in 2021.

I’m with you regarding Keith. He does have one of his best mates in the band though Steve Jordan. Keith brought him in and they’ve played and written together for decades. But he’s seriously taking a back seat and it’s clearly due to health and his abilities to play guitar.

I saw the Stones 3 times in 1981 - twice at Madison Square Garden with Screamin' Jay Hawkins opening and once at the Meadowlands in NJ with Tina Turner opening (that was incredible). It was at one of those shows. Yes, no exaggeration - they got so lost in Let It Bleed they actually stopped playing it. If memory serves they re-started it - but it was a long time ago. I loved it - Back in those days - they were very loose and oft-sounded like the wheels could fall off - in that case it did - but it was great - everybody had a laugh. Don't remember the exact show though.
