He was always a fantastic actor. My best friend and I got to meet him several years ago and he was happy that both of us geeked out over his film career and I, of course asked if he missed DS9 and he said he didn't miss the makeup, but he still lived everyone from the show. He told us about the great makeup and costumes people that "made Odo possible". Very cool guy. Wish I'd asked more questions!

I met Mark Alaimo at first Star Trek Destination convention in London. I got an autograph on a photo of Dukat - BUT I asked him to write my favourite Dukat quote first then sign it. The quote is "War is such thirsty work. Don't you agree?" he refused because he thought he never said that. I assured him he did, and funnily enough we almost got into an argument, I stayed as polite as I could. Just before I gave up on it, he relented and just said something like "ok, well if that's what you want written..." It's funny now and to be fair, he was older than when he was on the show and appeared so... mentally, if you know what i mean. It led to a very memorable encounter with one of my favorite DS9 characters.

@@poolhall9632 That is mostly Ira spreading rumors, because they did not like each other. Nana Visitor said she hated to work beside him on set, because she was in character and he was in character. She tried to change that and invited him to dinner once and it turned out he was a sweet nice man and she had lots of fun. Next time she saw him in makeup, she went back to being intimidated by "that Cardassian". Melanie Smith, Cyia Batten and Bertilla Damas are all on record that he was intense when in character, but a lovely guy to talk to. They were all laughs and giggles at all times and he was a classical thespian always in character. The reason why people bad mouth him is this slip of the tongue, which Ira exploited: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7OhqciImryYpoU.html Ira seems to be a petty man. Why he is not seen around anymore? Because he stopped acting a good while ago. He is on the older side.

I met him at the same convention, and well, my story is weird. So at the after party that year, Avery Brooks was due to play some live "Jazz", now the ExCeL center isn't the best live venue ever, and with how this con was run, the party was very much an afterthought, so it was an empty unadorned convention hall with a tiny floor level "stage" setup along one side. We'd had Gowron and Martok play a bunch of rock songs with Bat'Leth guitars, some really off colour "comedy" from a drunk Dominic Keating, and as the energy in the room was about to completely disappear, Avery walked up to the Piano and started playing. A crowd formed around the stage. A bunch of people sat on the hard cement floor in a circle in front of the stage, with a semicircle of people standing around that. I was at the front of that Semicircle, basically dead center, great view of this weird ass thing I'm watching. As I take a swig of the beer I had, I get a tap on the shoulder. I turn around, and there right in my face is Marc Alaimo, and boy does he look like Gul Dukat when he's half lit in shadow and inches from your face. "Can I get past?" he says and I move 90 degrees to open up a space for him to get through. He fucking glides past. He tip toes with an unearthly grace through the sitting crowd, finds a spot straight in the middle of this circle and drops straight down and sits with his legs tucked up against his chest. He then spends the entire loooong show watching Avery play very sparse Jazz. And It felt like I was the only person to realise all this had happened. Dukat was stuck in the crowd watching the Sisko perform on stage. It all felt very allegorical to the show.

@@AdamMPick I've watched multiple interviews with Nana Visitor and it is clear she had a good working relationship with the man and it's on those terms they worked well but she gives the consisted impression that on a personal level they did not click (why specifically i couldn't say). I read your comment and it really comes across as you projecting your own pettiness onto Ira (for whatever reasons you may have). I don't know the man at all so i have no understanding of the kind of man he is or isn't but i do know that your comment is coming off as disingenuous as you clearly liked Alamo from your limited meeting with him. I'd never seen that clip you've linked to before and it only again confirms that Nana does have some level of negativity in her opinion of him (the actor) beyond the work, she just choses to focus only on their working relationship.

So interesting fact. By this point in the series, After Beriel was dead... The writers wanted Kira in a new relationship and were SERIOUSLY pushing for it to be Dukut. It was Nana Visitor herself you put a stop to it. She described it as "it would be like Anne Frank falling for Hitler, it was out of character and disgusting". So that's why we got Shakaar because she refused to go forward with being any friendlier to Dukut unless romance was off the table.

Marc Alaimo is an amazing actor, and i think he does a great job portraying Dukat. He has this cult of personality around him, he knows how to talk a good game, put on a charming, beguiling face. But thats all it is. Dukat is a textbook sociopath. And thats whats so scary about him. He oversaw an occupation that lead to the deaths of millions of Bajorans, weve heard the stories, even seen examples of him doing terrible awful things, but he tricks the audience into rooting for him because his personality is so magnetic. He is not a good person. He wanted to kill his own daughter, you frame it as a postive that he didnt, but he wanted to KILL his daughter. He had to be talked out of it. And now hes tied to her because that decision backfired. Does he care for her, sure, i think theres part of him that does, but i think its because Ziyal makes him feel important. Now rhat hes lost everything else that gave him status, hes going to cling to the daughter that fawns over him. Ziyal has bought into the pretty face, she wants family, she wants a dad. Kira knows hes a monster. She can perhaps respect maybe his actions in this episode, but she knows still the man is not to be trusted, knows who he truly is. Hes a megalomaniac who truly believes hes the main character in the story, which is what draws people in. Its insidious. I think he sees Kira as an object, a prize to be won. It seems like its almost a challange to himself, that if he can convince her, the most steadfast and loyal resistance fighter, get her on his side, then hes truly won. As you can tell, i have lots of thoughts on Dukat lol.

Dukat and Garak are the best actors IN THE SERIES! Only ACTORS on their level would be Seven Of Nine and Picard and I'm talking STRICTLY ACTING performance. I don't remember all the actors real names so I'm only using their character names and not the actors that portray them. And I mean the ENTIRE TREK FRANCHISE not just DS9 by itself.

Dukat is a genuinely complex character. But that's what makes him an ideal DS9 villain. Hardly a good person, but not a 2D stereotype. Although Star Trek has many foes, such as the Borg or Khan, I'd always vote for Dukat as one of the best. (although the character of Lex Luthor in Smallville might be good competition)
@EvanG529
@EvanG529 Ай бұрын
Sociopath yes, but evil I don't think so, at least not at this point in the story. He has his demons, but his base motivations are not evil, and we see at times that the stories told about him are not so black and white. Dukat is motivated by 2 things: power and justification. Not exactly noble, but can lead him to be a force for good or evil.

Being umpredictable in your schedule is a good counter to terrorrists actually, they usually need a fixed plan for their plan to work out. Dukat the Pirate ! So badass. However, I understand Kira not wanting to be with him. She knows he wants to get into her pants to be honest...

I always loved Odo stories. Rene Auberjenois was a wonderful actor. Even behind all the makeup he is still able to emote and fill every scene with atmosphere. He brought a tremendous amount of humanity to that character and I also find it difficult to watch episodes where he is hurt. Hugs and kisses to beautiful Huxley. And I immediately fell in love with Ziyal's character. That is also a wonderful actress! Her character fit very well in DS9 and every time she is in a scene she shines and adds so much!

Which actress is the wonderful actress? (Okay, they're all good, just teasing :P) I do love the character, though my favorite actress is the last. I named a major RPG character after her, nobody can deny my affection haha. There is one scene with Quark later that is super minor but I just feel like lights up the whole station with her vibe - shining indeed!

Honestly it's not my favorite. The only reason it's "fine" is I like these characters for their much more compelling traits and storylines. First of all many complain of more Boring Kira Boyfriend Syndrome, and while I don't hate Bareil or Shakaar, I can't say they're totally off base. But mainly I just don't think genre shows with genre production styles tend to do very good "typical" storylines without the genre elements. Romance episode with an interstellar culture clash or taboos about past lives? Good stuff. Totally standard love triangle storyline? Just not that interesting / it's been done 100 times before and usually more compellingly in shows or movies that were actually build around the romance.
@jerodast
@jerodast Ай бұрын
Comparing to another example, _Smallville,_ a guilty pleasure that like Star Trek is a genre show with a large production order per season. _Smallville_ is much less thoughtful and often less polished than Star Trek, but they arguably have a similar episodic/semi-serialized pattern. And occasionally they try to do a not-really-genre episode. One I saw recently was trying to be a mid-90s sexy thriller (with young Lex Luthor). And like....it was fine. It was probably better than a lot of the dumber "freak of the week" episodes, technically. But most of those mid-90s sexy thrillers did it better, and THAT'S NOT REALLY WHY PEOPLE WATCH SMALLVILLE haha.
@jerodast
@jerodast Ай бұрын
And, hm, also maybe I just don't think Crossfire is that good. His Lwaxana episode was much better or even profound because it was more character driven. It didn't REALLY have to do with his shapeshifter powers, that was just the reason he felt alone that could've been swapped with any other reason, but their romance got to the core of both characters most beautifully. This episode, I dunno, you could drop almost any three characters into this story and it would be the same story. It makes SENSE for these characters but it doesn't feature their unique qualities.

@@jerodast Well, yeah, but on a show like that, it's too easy to be stuck in a rut of the same stuff happening over and over- the extreme cases are like "all musical" episodes- something Trek has not escaped in recent years. Or Captain Proton.😜

Cheers for the reaction, Ollie. The first episode is pretty sad and relatable. I guess unrequited love is difficult, but for Odo to have to witness the emerging romance between Kira and Shakir must be awful. As you noticed, another theme is the relationship between Odo and Quark. It's a complex one that I don't feel DS9 ever really resolved. There seems to be genuine animosity, and yet sometimes compassion as well. I remember you didn't like Ferengi before watching some DS9, but it's hard not to adore Quark (despite his many flaws!)

"Crossfire" was the first _DS9_ episode I saw. I'd been a _TNG_ fan for years, but _DS9_ always looked too different for me (hey, I was eleven when it debuted). I finally got these two episodes on VHS for my fifteenth birthday so _had_ to give the show a go. Maybe it was because I was at "that age" when I had crushes on girls way out of my league, but I really identified with Odo. I quickly realised what I'd been missing and became a massive _DS9_ fan.

In this series they really expanded upon (and improved upon) what already made Star Trek enjoyable to begin with; the morality tales, technological concepts, character arcs, mythology. I came to this realization about 10 years when binged my way through the entire franchise: at that time TOS up to Enterprise. I really regret having slept on DS9 when it originally aired on tv, because, like many OG TNG fans, the first season left a bad taste in my mouth -- it wasn't TNG, it was darker and, at least in comparison to TNG's final two seasons much less engaging to me. And, you know, I grew to love the crew of Picard's Enterprise soo much it was sad to leave them behind. Now in retrospect, I consider TOS, TNG and DS9 to be the perfect companion trilogy. I grew to love this strange and troubled crew of misfits and villains 😊 And Avery Brookes is an incredibly underrated Captain/character.

CONTINUITY & PRODUCTION ERRORS CROSSFIRE (IMDb Rating: 8.2) 3:17 Shakaar arrives in a Wadi ship. (Move Along Home) 3:56 You mean "last name basis", don't you Ollie? 7:40 Here's one I found myself: After Kira says Odo's belt looks "much" better, she mouths "I guess I'll turn in". You can barely hear her. (not in this edit) Did they forget to ADR her dialogue here, and also when she says "goodnight"? 18:06 After Quark thanks Odo for soundproofing the floor, Kira and Shakaar sit at a table. Shakaar's earring is missing. (not in this edit) Maybe they weren't "practicing speeches" in the holosuite after all. 😉 RETURN TO GRACE (IMDb Rating: 7.3) 29:13 The phasers look like they hit the Klingon ship from underneath, yet that's not where the Klingons appear to be on Dukat's viewscreen. The Bird of Prey was also hit while it's shields were down, yet when it passes overhead, there is no sign of any damage. Dukat's phasers really suck.
