We're impressed with all the crazy ROM hacks out there today, but we lose interest in playing them fairly quickly. But what kinds of ROM hacks might interest someone who normally doesn't play ROM hacks? In this episode, Coury takes a look ROM hacks of a more utilitarian nature.

A ROM hack adding new features is one thing. But re-coding the main logic of a game to use the SA-1 co-processor just to make the game run smoother? That is serious next-level dedication (and incredibly time-consuming)...

IIRC, the SA-1 is the same CPU as the SNES', just running at 4x the speed. So no porting was needed.

@@IanTester That's something of an oversimplification. It's true that much of the same code can run on the SA-1 and the SNES CPU, but it's not a drop-in replacement. There are still things you have to use the SNES CPU for, so the game has to be altered to run different pieces of the engine on both chips at the same time, without getting in each other's way. You're not rewriting code for a different chip, but you *are* rewriting code in some very significant ways.

The New Controls hack also suppresses the "No problem here." text when using the A button to check, and entirely removes "Talk to" and "Check" from the menu (that is now accessed via X). There have been some other QoL hacks in the EB community--a Run button hack has been around for a while, for instance. Also, for the purposes of the EarthBound Randomizer, I developed a "Ludicrous Text Speed" hack that makes all text, even battle text, display instantly; a "Goods Menu Equip" patch that lets you equip items from the Goods menu instead of getting an annoying error message, and a "R Button Drop" patch that uses the R Button to instantly drop the last item received from a chest or battle (with a little "pewww" sound effect.)

Romhackers are living legends, man, they do such a generous service to the community. Let me mention a few of my favorites: Live-A-Live: the Aeon Genesis Translation is stupendous, what more can I say Fire Emblem 4 & 5: Project Naga and Project Exile, again, superb translations. Fire Emblem: Binary is incredible, it's a global rebalancing and retelling of FE4, spectacular Castlevania II Retranslated + Map totally elevates the antiquated and clunky old game. Clock Tower, Ganpuru: Gunman's Proof, Star Ocean, Front Mission: Gun Hazard, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, Front Mission II: Gun Hazard, Tengai Makyou Zero, Adventures of Hourai High are all fantastic translations that didn't get mentioned in the video. There's the MSU-1 series of patches that add CD-quality music to old games. Then there's smaller stuff that fixes nagging issues. Harvest Moon resets your accomplishments if you go too high, there's a patch to get that out. There's a patch that cleans up the spelling errors in Turtles in Time. Thank you romhackers!
@NetConsole
@NetConsole 4 жыл бұрын
Are the Fire Emblem translations finally complete? Because i've read they have been like 98% complete for over a decade. Also, is Aeon Genesis the only translation of Live A Live? Because I just ordered a repro cart and I wonder if that's the translation being used.

A personal favourite hack of mine is the fan translation of Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere. Outside of Japan the game was cut down significantly, reducing the number of missions from 52 to 36 and cutting two aircraft. But the story was butchered horribly, as all branching paths were cut, all cutscenes removed and the premise greatly simplified. This translation is simply the Japanese game with full English subtitles for all pieces of dialogue found throughout the game. The international version is merely okay, but the JP version is really a must-play for a fan of classic Japanese sci-fi storytelling like Ghost In the Shell or Evangelion.
@DeadEyeJ
@DeadEyeJ 5 жыл бұрын
Now I gotta go back and try this ROM hack. I fucking love the Ace Combat series. I started with 4 on the PS2, but went back to play the older titles and was disappointed that Ace Combat 3 had a lot of cut content. I played the original Japanese version, and it's probably the best Ace Combat game next to Ace Combat 5.
@CANiHAVEaCHIP1
@CANiHAVEaCHIP1 5 жыл бұрын
@@DeadEyeJ 3 for me is a close second behind Zero, primarily for the little adjustments the PS2 games made to streamline the gameplay, but 3 was the last game I played in the series (yet to play 7 sadly) and was surprised in how unlike the other PS1 games it feels.

Ace Combat 3 just impressed the heck outta me. It's an expansive game that reaches for the stars. Well, quite literary even. I just scrolled down the comments just to see if someone mentioned it. While I wouldn't call it the best, or even one of the best games in the series, it's the most interesting for sure and I can't wait until we move a bit closer and closer in the storyline.Also, 7 is pretty good!

Some of the fun for me with retrogaming is putting fan relocalizations on the JP version of carts, since they can be had pretty cheap. I also just like having a real cart instead a pirated thing or a software solution

@Attack of the Pixels Selling an emulator for Playstation and Snes games? I seriously doubt Sony and Nintendo would let you do that here in the west. Especially since they have their own classic systems now. And is Project 64 for the N64? If so Nintendo would eat you alive for trying to sell something that plays N64 games. I really can't believe what you're saying. Look at what happened with Soulja Boi or whatever his name was. There's no way this is all legal when even using Mario's sprite can get you in trouble.

On another note, I'm not sure why the A-button hack for EarthBound was necessary, given that you can already use the L button for auto-Check and auto-Talk. I suppose it's less cumbersome if you're emulating and using keyboard controls, but it's still kinda redundant. A more recommendable minor quality-of-life patch is the Run Button patch (which is also present in one version of the MaternalBound Omega hack).

There's a romhack of Ocarina of Time called The Practice ROM where it turns the game into a trainer / practice / testing utility used by speedrunners and glitch hunters of the game. It's incredibly featured, with additions such as coordinates recollection, loading warp zones, inventory editing, equipment management, flag management, memory watches, console save states, and advanced debug options. It turns OoT into a sandbox version of itself once you know how to navigate the rom's menus.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 on the SNES have never received western releases and that's a shame because they're incredible. Luckily Project Naga and Project Exile fix that with fan translations allowing you to experience some of the best classic Fire Emblem has to offer. Especially in Genealogy's case because that is a sweeping historical epic that goes through generations and plays so differently from normal FE. Also on the DS front there is a fan translation of Fire Emblem 12, the only FE not released out of Japan after 7, that is worth checking out.

Great episode as always. One thing I think was missed though is arcade hacks are starting to become a thing as well. Mortal Kombat 2 had an upgrade project a couple of years ago that added some features like combo tracking. I think it added characters also. This hack can be flashed onto a chip and played on a real arcade cabinet! There's work being done right now by a KZfaqr, TehDrewsus to "finish" UMK3. He worked on the MK2 project I think. So far, he's added in Human Smoke and Noob Saibot as selectable from the character select screen. Added Rain as a playable character and given him moves and fatalities from Trilogy. He's adding Brutalities. He's given Shang Tsung morphs for every character (some were missing in UMK3 like Smoke). He's also giving every character a full set of finishing moves. Also, he's added some more stages. He's not trying to make Trilogy, just trying to complete the game with everything that was "unfinished". It's really impressive stuff... AND it can be flashed and played on real hardware. Speaking of fighting games, I feel like the MK2 and 3 hacks on the Genesis are worth mentioning. The UMK3 hack has SO much content an can be played with an Everdrive. It's basically a MUGEN. There's also the SF2 color fixes that make the game look much better. Finally, I think one of the best QoL hacks that needs attention is the one AVGN gave attention to in his re-review of Simon's Quest that really fixes the translation of the game and speeds up the scrolling text speed.

Excelent video. I also tend to prefer these practical hacks, fixing problems, restoring all kinds of things, adding features... Fan-generated content tends to be hit and miss, unfortunately. Let's face it, making a good game is not an easy task. Most hacks focused on new content are really geared towards the truly hardcore fan, and the extreme-challenge junkie rathern than a well rounded experience. Longer and bigger total-conversion projects tend to be better, if only because it requires well motivated and disciplined people to get through the whole process and complete them, which naturally leads to a more serious and higher quality effort. Even with that, hacks with quality comparable to retail releases are still a small portion of the total output, and there's just too much stuff to keep up with and find the good ones buried under all the ...rest... ahem! Personally, I have a soft spot for new levels on 5th generation 3D games, and also 6th, but not as much. The difficulty involved here filters mediocrity to a certain extent, but there's still a considerable ammount of forgettable and just unimpressive stuff when you look at it more objectively and not so much with fan-googles. Still, the good ones do shine, indeed. One of the problems with all this is the distribution and organization model for ROM dumps and patches and their transfer to diverse devices is really problematic and cumbersome, even if you know what you are doing, adding too much work to the process. A smarter and more automated system is needed, but this goes into the realm of dreams and hopes at the present time. xD
