Another alternative to the descender rig that he showed at the end is to get a hook and skin hook it in the cheek. Then drop it down and when at the sufficient depth jerk the rod to break the hook out. Minimal damage to the fish that won’t have any long term effects

I was told by other experienced angler's including charter boat captains, theat the decending divices make us feel better, but not the fish. I forget what depth they are speaking of ... it varied between them, but I somehow remember that if any fish has its eyes popping, or bladder out its mouth ... it's a dead fish. I'd like to know your opinion, Roland. Btw, great video. I have a boat know, so I'll be paying extra attention. Let's hope the new Rockfish Regs coming 1/1/23 will have little impact on our sport.

having a dropper loop short at approx 3-4 inches will help prevent the twist on your line. Rockfish are not finicky eaters as long they are around with current moving they will eat anything you put in front of them. Also by having a short loop will be less likely to be swallowed and will always be hooked on the lip.

Best tutorial ever. Thank you guys. Just have one question. What if you cut your dropper loop (instead of having to lines going to a hook you have one) in this case you will also prevent a twisting.
@RomanCastroVlog
@RomanCastroVlog 9 ай бұрын
Hi @lenlvovsky, Do you mean like with a 3 way swivel? That would work great and you would avoid twisting. It's a good idea.

setups, outfits and rigs can not be more different from one coast to another.. i do believe that this is effective in the Pacific, but in the Atlantic coast we would never use this =) we use conventionals and medium to large spinners just the same, but the biggest difference is rod and line selection, we use shorter, more flexible blanks, just as powerful but lighter. and that just for bottom fishing and speed jigging (for large groupers, cubera snappers, black and yellowfin tuna, and large amberjacks, wich are pretty much yellowtails) and for slow pitch jigging we use small conventionals with very thin braid and noodle almost toy-like specialty rods.. but looks can be deceiving, because those small reels and thin, light rods pack a lot of punch.

Couple opinions, just what I have picked up over the years, for rockfish I don't think you need droppers than long, I think you would have less tangles.. and I believe from over the years missing a lot of bites, rockfish tend to hit the baits from behind, tail first, so I started hooking the baitfish on the back,,they don't swim well, but a wiggle is enough, just my opinions.

@@RomanCastroVlog I got so tired of bringing up bait fish missing their tails, I went to a halibut rig in 30lb, the live anchovies couldn't really swim at all with two hooks in them, but the struggle wiggle I think enticed the rockfish and lings even more, and I stopped bringing back baits minus their back ends. Good luck.

Hi! These red rock fish are great. Flaky white meat. You can get fancy and make fish tacos, fry in oil or air, and some of my friends love them steamed. Be careful with the spines like any other fish. Not poisonous but a poke could get infected. These Reds have no teeth. You can lip them. Hope that helps. Any other questions don't hesitate to ask!

Fish what you have. It will work. You are going to be using 6-12 oz of weight so that will be fine. I'd do 10-20' of 30-40# Mono in case you snag up you can break it off and you dont lose your braid. Do an FG Knot to connect the Braid to the Mono. Good luck!

What size hook is the best to use for rock fishing?
@brotherssportfishing5807
@brotherssportfishing5807 4 жыл бұрын
Xyruz Magat hook size depends on what bottom species you’re targeting, and what size of bait you are using. If I’m targeting general rockfish with squid, I’ll use size 2/0-4/0 J-hook mustad. If targeting Whitefish with squid, I’ll use size 2 J-hook because they have small mouths. If you’re using live bait, match your hook to your anchovy, sardine, or mackerel. Live sardine I’ll use 2/0. Mackerel I use 4/0.
