When V hands the camera to IU, he has a timid expression, and backs up as if to pose for the camera. He's imagining how she will see him, and he's both hopeful and shy. He longs to be seen for himself, without scars and injury influencing the person who looks at him. There's a dynamic here, I don't know exactly how to describe. Each does not see himself/herself transform. Neither one runs to do a mirror selfie and see his/her own transformation. The attention of the viewer is on the other. The viewer's delight is to see the other transformed. The one who is seen gains strength from being seen "in a better light". Here's everything you might have missed: 1) IU is deaf/mute and V is blind in one eye. IU uses sign language in the dinner table. 2) The cube (the director said it is called "nemo") represents the society which discriminates against people having disabilities or those who are simply different (often considered as misfits) thus eliminating them. (the pile of clothes: The pile of clothes also reminds you of BTS "Spring day"MV which also features it) 3) However Love truly wins all. IU and V stayed together because of their true love. 3) The camrecorder shows how the world would have been if the society didn't discriminate against them. They would have get married happily. If you see the scene where IU was singing in the mic and Tae puts a flower on her ear, the people in the back were pointing fingers at them. 4) The scene where they are at the restaurant and the scene where she is on stage singing in her wedding dress, you can see how the people around covered in black are all pointing their fingers at Tae and IU (represents how harshly the world judges them especially in their happy moments) 5) The whole mv was mainly shown from the pov of IU. You can see how she always put herself in the danger first and tries to protect Tae, how tenderly she loved him, her touches were so gentle as she saw his normal eye through the cam. But Tae loved her too. At the end of their life, he puts himself in front and tried to break the box. They both are equally scared but when time comes, they can sacrifice themselves for the other. This is true love. 6) IU taps three times on Tae's shoulder during the scene where he grabs her hand tightly. The three taps translates to "I love you" in sign language.

Such a beautiful and emotional video featuring amazing acting and vocals that makes the experience so personal. I really do hope that Tae & IU do other projects together both film and music as they have great chemistry and when he was on her show their voices also blended so well. Also at the end it was pointed out by someone that he can hear what is coming but she can't, while she can see what is coming but she covers his good eye so he can't. Both cry at the same moment though and from the same left eye. Also the right side of his face seems to have burn scars so maybe he had encountered a cube before but got away at the last minute. This cube was relentless in its pursuit and even seemed to change size so it could come into the building. Earlier when it was flying overhead you could tell no way it could fit inside those hallways. I also noticed the cube waits for them to stop fighting and accept their fate. If you notice there are no other people so obviously no person is able to meet the criteria this cube holds that would allow someone to survive. The camcorder that kept showing a better reality, was giving us the viewer a happier version of the events. They both rise in the air together, their bodies still solid, while the reality is that they have been turned to ash. At the top of the camcorder right before it turns off you see ash particles in the air. I also loved how the clothes landed together on the pile. Again all of this symbolizing that even though they seemingly lost to the cube, it couldn't destroy their love for each other. They stayed together in life and death, so indeed their love did win. I can't get enough of this MV, the acting is Oscar level and combined with the award worthy vocals and lyrics it's both heartbreaking but also heartwarming that at least they went together.

First, the "cube" signified the discrimination and oppression that are prevalent in the daily lives of the main characters. Second, the "camcorder" represents the "lens of love," an important "device" that allows us to look at the beautiful things in the world beyond the internal or external appearance of the characters. Third, IU and BTS V became the main characters in a "survival story of a dystopian worldview of someone who cannot speak and sees the world only through his left eye." Despite the difficulty, feeling hurt and exhausted, they relied on each other despite "cube" and tried to overcome it in the end. Fourth and last, the "wedding dress and tuxedo" symbolize the "fruit of love." The evil cube sees them as inferior or imperfect and wants to destroy them. At the end you could see smoke rising so yes I believe the evil cube was burning them because you could see their ashes in camera view while their clothes were being lifted on the pile of clothes.

Sorry for the multiple comments - I totally get the mask thing Loo... I too wear one everyday and have had people comment on it.. personally I ignore them because I don't care what people think... or I ask them if they're going to pay my bills whilst I'm off sick .... People shouldn't speak if they don't know what someone is going through in their personal life...

I must ask how does using sign language only mean a person is deaf? Especially when in that same scene she clearly hears the sound of the cube overhead? Doesn't her actually hearing something trump the sign language means deaf card? Of course it does. But there is more. The lip ring is used to almost show that it is speech that is the issue for IU. As the the lip ring is not present in any of the fantasy scenes. How do you communicate to an audience exactly what an issue is when there is no dialogue and no visual que to inform then? In V's situation the condition of his eye is clearly visible and in the fantasy scenes again the fact that his eye is ok is clearly visible. For being deaf or mute how do you communicate that. Well a lip ring that is present when she can't speak and missing when she can us a pretty solid indicator. Add to that the fact that in the wedding scene she has a microphone and is singing. Beside the use of sign language there are no indicators at all that she can't hear. Nothing to show us that her condition has changed, like using headphones for example. In fact every thing that happens that requires the ability to hear in order to react to the situation IU reacts to. There is one message, Love period. It is not about disabilities or one type of love or one group or another. In fact that take is quite offensive. It changes it from a message of love to one of victimhood, revenge, which is just another form of hate. There is only one interpretation of the entire package. IU is the producer and wrote the lyrics, so the concept is totally hers and it is all one the same point. About the love over coming ALl. NOT love for people with one condition or the other. Do you not see how that is dividing people and live into types versus a general love one love for All.
