Let's look at one of the most beloved JRPGs in Japan and one of my favorite JRPGs ever.
Developed by Square, Romancing SaGa 2 was originally released for the Super Famicom in 1993 but didn't get a Western release until way later, in 2016.

Lovely game, and great summary and review! Found this channel two days ago, because of your RS2 explain videos. Really helpful and I'm hoping you're gonna cover more obscure JRPGs!

Just picked this up myself with Romancing Saga 3 and Scarlet Graces ambition for a little change to my RPG diet, they are really hard but satisfying to complete. Nice review, and I'm trying to come up with my own unique video style and was leaning towards this type of content as well Good luck to you on your channel!

I just wanted to say, I love your accent. Usually when I look up video game reviews, they're narrated by a dude with a British accent (not that I take issue with British accents, it's just saturated the search results). It's actually kind of refreshing to hear something else. Thank you for providing your opinion on this game. I didn't realize it was as old as you said (I just glanced at it on PS store's Sale list). And thank you for mentioning that it's available on mobile. I might actually grab this game just for the nostalgic moments that remind me of other games that came out around that time period.

Great video buddy. Romancing SaGa, even SaGa in general is quite the gem the west was missing out on. Just picked up Scarlet Grave and Romancing SaGa 3 on the latest sale!

I want to continue in this series but I don't know where to go next, I played romancing saga the minstrel song, unlimited saga and saga scarlet race, which one would you recommend?

how do you compare this game to Saga Frontier? i just started RS2 but i am finding the story lacking compared to SF or final fantasy or star ocean

I haven't played Saga Frontier or any of the Star Ocean games (yet), but I can say that RS2 isn't story-oriented. It has small stories you can do in any order, but they're not deep or well defined. The overarching story is told in pieces that you have to put together yourself, and it's also pretty thin. RS2 is all about the gameplay mechanics.

Sort of, but not like in Final Fantasy. When leaving a location, you choose a destination from the map and fast travel there (4:31 in the video). New locations unlock after certain events. Some of the locations are towns, but others are overworld-like areas, where you're going through a jungle, or climbing a mountain or whatever. These connect the larger regions of the map, so you can't reach far-off towns without traveling through them at least once.

@@rpg_haven ahh, I see. Thanks for clarifying. Still trying to decide if I want to pull the trigger on part 2 and 3. I own and have beaten final fantasy 1 through 15 and looking for something along that line but also something not too difficult...

@@sector7676 It doesn't sound like this is what you're looking for. It's one of the more difficult JRPGs I've played and doesn't have much in common with Final Fantasy except being a JRPG with turn-based combat. That said, it's a fantastic game and you might love it anyway. 3 is a little easier and much more accessible, though.

I was gonna try it until I heard the game has permadeath. Major turn off for me. I'm too casual for that.

It's not as bad as it sounds due to the global level system, but it helps to know what you're doing for sure. Also, characters have multiple "lives", and dying in battle is only permanent if they run out.

I get that, but try thinking of the kingdom itself as the main character, and the units you recruit as getting power from the kingdom. That's essentially how the game works.
