Cool, I didn't know that. These games have a ton of Chinese mythological references I probably missed.

It doesn't matter-they've very different games despite sharing a similar combat system. Try whichever one suits your fancy best. Personally, I like 2 way more.

My recommendation would be to play minstrel song when it comes out. It's a remake of RS1 and it's probably my favorite SaGa game in general.

The more SaGa games I play, the more it seems like a crucial piece of the 90s JRPG dev scene that most Westerners have no clue about. The series is every bit as good (I'd argue it's better) and influential as Final Fantasy. Btw if you're getting killed that much in RS2, try changing up your strategy. Formation, spells, weapons-there's something you can improve. (Or go do a different quest line)

@@rpg_haven honestly the deeper I get into this franchise the more I scratch my head wondering how it didn't take off more readily here in the West given how much people seem to decry linearity. That said, it wouldn't kill the devs to better explain a lot of factors. Like I had absolutely no idea until I saw a random comment on GameFAQs that wearing gloves causes an accuracy penalty for bows in RS2.

@@MalaciteHahah, it makes me wonder if the Japanese manual explained more. I haven't been able to find a translated version, so I dunno. I suspect the series didn't take off due to a lack of marketing, plus the West largely wasn't ready for the kind of offbeat mechanics SaGa introduced. JRPGs didn't start to take hold here in a big way until the late '90s (basically with FFVII), and I remember people complaining about RPGs feeling samey well into the '10s (not true, but that was the sentiment). The lack of mainstream exposure to series like SaGa, even for big JRPG fans, greatly affected Western opinion for a long time.

Must be something with my capture card or editing software. The game is much smoother than that

I'm not sure why I don't mind it in these games, but I hate the font in the Final Fantasy pixel remasters.
