Meira Lettieri I have a related question. When you're at the start of a relationship, how do you differentiate affectionate names. In the South, I think people are much more casual about using "caro/cara" for example, but what if the (sicilian) man you're dating uses "carissima" or "gioia"? How about "amore?" I'm in what has been a rather complicated relationship and we are not young. In fact, we had taken a break but he came back to me. This is long distance btw. He has started using those terms and adding kissy emojis in texts. I can't tell you how happy it made me when he called me "gioia" but I don't want to get carried away. He has been thru a very difficult time in recent years and if I am truly a joy to him, I want to always be.
