Back in the 50’sand 60’s everyone had a cigarette in their hand, which basically meant you didn’t have a right hand or left hand, depending on which hand you have a cigarette in. Today you don’t have any hands if you smoke because you got your iPhone in one hand and your cigarette in the other hand, you’re a big trouble!😂🤣😃

fortunately Rome is a huge city, divided into 15 different municipalities (some of these have over 200,000 inhabitants). so almost no one lives in the historic center (the only thing tourists see)

We were there last week. Only the main tourist attractions look like this. I’m glad so many people are able to enjoy this. You can walk 50 Feet away from most attractions and there are just a few people. And if you go early in the morning, even these attractions are Much less crowded. Local folks are spending their time here anyway. It’s sort of like Times Square in NYC. It’s crowded, but most of the city is not in Times Square.

We went to Rome in February of 2022 when people began traveling again post-pandemic and it was usually this crowded around Trevi Fountain. I know this because we stayed for a week in an apartment hotel just around the block from there so we would pass the fountain at least twice a day. I suggest going there very early around 6 A.M. if your accommodation is nearby. You might get the fountain to yourself and maybe just a few others.

This is absolutely the saddest thing to see. Tourists walking on the stones of history ,an area that should be considered a sacred site and Cemetery. As much as I loved ancient history and the thought of finding out as much as possible of our history in the world, the very Act of disturbing the dead turns my stomach and makes my skin crawl. Deep respect and much love

We were there on the 18th, the day prior to your walk, and walked to the Colisseum, then on to Trevi fountain, then intended to take a taxi back to the hotel. after 90 minutes walking. Three reallly crappy things that day... 1) the taxis and busses were on strike, 2) the Trevi fountain was closed when we arrived around noon. A guy was there spraying something, perhaps cleaner, on the empty fountain. 3) as you made clear in your walk, it was extremely crowded everywhere we went... The crowds have gotten out of control. It really felt like Disneyland on a summer weekend. Gross. Good for Rome's economy, but lousy if you're a tourist. I had mistakenly thought that in September the summer crowds would have lessened, but clearly not.
@Kate-qq3ez10 ай бұрын
Well 90 minutes walking is not unusual in an European city. Most of the time when visiting any European city you will walk at least 10 kilometers per day, but of course you can use the metro, the bus or a taxi. Everything is at a walking distance.

@Patricia756110 ай бұрын
Yeap, in the warm season that is very long, from April/May to October Rome is invaded by turists, not that I complain about it, but gives me a bit of claustrophibic feeling, when you happen to be in te center and you have to go from one place to another, instead of speed walking straight to you destination as you do in the rest of year, you have to zigzag around people, stop, wait, go again slownly, making you take double of the time to reach you destination. Best time to go around is January, cold but sunny and not so many people.
