Day Four of Living as the Romans: It's getting rather hard to impersonate both the Scipii and the Brutii at the same time in front of the Julii. The Julii are starting to wonder why their two brother clans are never in the same room together. I've at least gotten a hang of quick changes between blue and green togas!

I'm loving the evolution of this run. Started out as a merc challenge, then became Sid Meier's Pirates, and now we're back to Barbarian Invasion all over again.

I love seeing Jon being absolutely amazed over the AI understanding the concept of a wall and how to protect it.

The Samnite Mercenaries broke because you lowered their morale by continually calling them Sarmatians.

It’s so weird seeing him just walk all over the Roman factions it’s like the ai just had an immediate meltdown, they haven’t made a single good decision since the start.

I’ve noticed you lose your generals a lot in charges, but if you use the morale horn before a charge the general becomes delayed, allowing the charge to be done without them and then they can join later with cushion from their bodyguard

Jon, if I recall correctly the Senate faction will just pull a new general 'out of their arse' if they die of old age, as the game has to have senatorial positions filled by someone - if theres nobody alive to assign the position to, they just invent someone.

I believe Jon said 'Love it" about 6 times in two minutes. Love it.

"The Germans are coming" Of course the Germans stick to being historically accurate and go to take over the Italian peninsula regardless of who is in charge.....

Jon, remember the rally horn trick when charging generals forward: and keep an eye on the individual unit so you can withdraw it when bloody. In this game a bit, but especially the next one in the series, letting your general get bloody (and still winning) repeatedly will eventually make them a scarred and blood soaked god of war. Letting a bloody general keep fighting makes them a dead general.

As Jon has problems on water I tested the navy-building. So you have the basic birems. Little boats that sinks. They get anihilated by heavy durable trirems. As barbarian factions stop here, you can do most of your campaigns with it. Other factions get quinquirems, 2turns to train and won't ever lose nor sink. Scipiones cities praising Neptune get more OP with a big bad corvus quinquirem, Beating everything that floats... Unless... they DOUBLE the size of these monstruosities with their upgrade: the decarems! 120 men in big scale, 3 turns to train and the best stats! Now that's ridiculously superlative!

So what I'm seeing in terms of stress levels for Jon is Fallout 4: Yolo, and Rome Total War: Dacian YOLO. On the plus side, Jon is on the way to becoming the Pirate King. That's cool.

Rome Total War was the first video game I ever played and it's an utter delight to see it back on the channel! I hope for many more campaigns in the future - including Barbarian Invasion hopefully!

I am so interested to see what Jon does after this run is over. What new Rome game? What about the Selucids on Very Hard both, but you have an added caviat. You cannot declare war on Romans (or if they declare on you only fight defensive battles) until the Marian reforms take place. Adds an early game challenge on top of the difficult start the Selucids get.

Looks like the Dark Ages is about to start 1000 or so years early, nice work Jon!

Edit: I typed in the comment at 7 minutes in since it popped to mind. Literally 3 minutes later he goes over generals and such. Perfect lol A part of me aches having no real stories or updates regarding the statuses of the generals in the armies. It makes sense, at least to me, since faction lineage just isn't as important in this run but hearing Jon praise or berate his generals for being good or trash made me feel attached to the units a bit.

Jon's battle weaknesses A) he fails to realize the effect stamina has on Morale, runs all his troops everywhere and then surprise Pikachu face when they break B) Fails to realize the effect friendly fire has on his troops numbers and morale C) He goes into lengthy soliloquies when focused on one small section of the battle map where elsewhere his units are getting mauled. An example, he uses a general to chase a militia cavalry, all the while the militia Cav hurl Javelins backwards eating into the hit points, then when they do finally make it into close combat have more more morale because they have better stamina and haven't been running up hill into javelin fire. The general dies in an absolute waste especially considering generals are his only way of recruiting this run. Throwing away battles. Surprising for someone who has been playing this for nearly 20 years> Having said that his success on the campaign map against the romans is really surprising, I'm really enjoying this series

I’ve continued this campaign a bit from the last time I commented, I burned Thrace to the ground and was going to start attacking the Greeks (who got really strong and kicked the shit out of Macedon) by going after Thessalonica which was guarded by only damaged units. Then a full stack Greek army appeared out of nowhere and I retreated to my territory and decided to wait for reinforcements from Crete and Scythia (via going one tile into Scythia and buying the mercs). Then the Macedonians came and stole Thessalonica out from under me, so I stabbed Macedon in the back and stole what was rightfully mine. I’m going to burn down Bylazora next and the Romans will probably take care of Segestica, so Macedon is screwed.

I can't BELIEVE you only have 500k subs and 33k views on an episode of this series. You're a BRILLIANT youtuber. The quality is 1.5 mil sub quality, with 500k view per vid quality videos! I'm almost upset, except I know when people figure out what they're missing, they'll have the amazing Skyrim, (still can't believe what you did to our magophobic boy) Fallout 4 YOLO and other great series to look forward to, once you get the proper exposure. The original Stellaris series is a bit dated now, but still really good for a look back, for new hardcore fans.

I started this challenge myself managed to get a thrace city early and then had them and scythia as my allies and then they both betrayed me as Germany attacked me
