I remember being on holiday with a friend of mine in Spain. He's Indian and we were both teenagers at the time. We were in the elevator going down to the main lobby in our hotel, and some white guy in the elevator confronts my friend and says quite aggressively "are you Muslim?", my friend said "no" (because he wasn't). But the guy wasn't having it - "you're lying, you are a Muslim" angrily, we both were making it clear that he wasn't a Muslim. But we could see this white man getting even angrier because for some reason, all brown people in his eyes must be scary Jihadis. At this point we were terrified cause this guy must have been double our age. Luckily we got down to the lobby before things escalated and told security, but it was scary as hell. Imagine if my friend was a Muslim, what would that guys response have been? What right does this stranger have to "check" another persons religion as if it affects them as a character? We were at a beach resort in Spain, my friend was a skinny teenage boy in a Hawaii pattern shirt. He clearly wasn't dangerous, just like Romesh wasn't as he walked in to that L.A. bar. But some white people just see brown skin and feel the need to "check" that the brown person isn't a threat.

Spain was a segregated society, when I was in Madrid in the 90s, in that racial stereotypes were very rarely broken, Conguitos adverts were all over the TV, Chinese people only worked in restaurants or sold you roses, etc. However, the only aggro my mate of Indian descent got was from a couple of Aussie wankers in a bar. They couldn't keep up with his rapier Colindale wit and were easily dispatched.

I’m originally from London and enjoyed the anonymity that the city brings. But there was a time of my life where I’d lost somebody dear to me with cancer, and spent 3 months (lots of it alone) in Southern California. Just sitting at a diner, and people being friendly to a stranger with a different accent, genuinely helped heal my heart. And I’ll always be grateful for that. The thing about London is that every commuter is stressed and feels grumpy and just wants their journey to be over. Everyone imagines that everyone else feels the same and wants to be left alone. Londoners are always being approached on the streets, often by people trying to sell you something, give you some junk advertising, drunkenly rail at you, or some other unwanted contact, so they learn to avoid eye contact, keep their heads down and move swiftly on. However when I tripped up in the middle of the road and fell over, some guy from behind lifted me up. I didn't even see him coming and when I turned around to thank him he was already heading off fast away from me. I called out a thank you to his back. People can be kind when they see a need. In Liverpool however, you can walk into a pub and easily get into a safe, convivial and interesting conversation with a stranger with no hidden agenda.

Hey man, believe it or not, some people just don't like talking to people. Just like I can't comprehend how people can have bustling exhaustive social lives, always out at bars or parties, you probably can't comprehend how someone could actually feel solace, or even enjoyment, in simple solitude. I have a few close friends I talk to daily (although I have gone a day or two without talking to anyone), but I definitely don't go out hoping for interesting conversation with total strangers.

'colonial descendant' implies a despise of foreigners and immigrants is genetic. It's not, it's conditioned by nurture (not nature). That's the real reason why some americans are racial, moreso in this time of favoring tribalism, vendettas and choices based on emotions over facts. The south and eastern seaboard are more conservative in their values, versus the western states which still exude their pioneering tradition, cause their communities prolonged those values.

I had no idea Romesh had made the trip over to America. Good for him. Either he was visiting Britain the last time I saw him on British TV, or my temporal awareness is out of whack. He was oddly subdued. I thought he'd be more mindful of the laughs-per-minute dealie on late night shows in America. Stephen, for all his talent, hasn't quite nailed down the interview thing. It's _not_ a slight, at all. I've noticed it on a few occasions, he'll let someone hang for a bit too long, or he'll stick to the card. I've noticed it mostly with stand ups, although to be fair, I only watch segments on KZfaq, which means I'm far more likely to click on an interview segment if it's a stand up. While I'm on it, I've not watched one of his monologues for a few weeks, mostly because of the day-to-day diarrhea splat that is the quasi-president. Basically, I've winnowed my trump intake, news-based or satirical, to a few indie media outlets, John Oliver and Sam Bee. As a result, I don't know if the dynamic between Stephen and Jon has improved.
