This is the best mill I have ever seen bar none. Amazing that companies sell mills not half as good as this, and have whole teams of engineers. And this is one or two guys wit the idea for this. Amazing.

My compliments. This video deserve more comments. Your design impresses me. ( I noticed Steve Cross commented on you: what a feather in your HAT) .. Not many people comprehend the design, acquiring materials accommodating the design, the ability to hands on go from the drafting table to the shop, A N D COMPLETION of your dream machine. To add to that you are a good head sawyer. Thank you for the video. Larry (AKA "Termite")

4 years later and still a very good video, They had a saw Smith (2 Brothers I think) in Rice back in the seventies. I learned to tension a blade from CC (Curtis Carson) Conoway He liked his Bud Bottled beer and Canadian Clubs whiskey.

I made the turner from scratch. Pretty simple actually, consisting of 4 ball bearings; orbit motor; sprockets; hyd cylinder and some scrap iron. I used a 2" pitch roller chain and welded a pair of triangles on each with a little hard facing on the tips for wear.

The topsaw avoids needing a large headsaw in order to cut very large logs.The larger the headsaw, the more unstable it is.This setup works great when doing custom sawing since many customers drag their logs out in the dirt.Once the teeth lose their edge, a large headsaw will wander excessively causing the vertical edger to saw out of the saw kerf.This small 48" headsaw along with its large collar makes this setup extremely stable and with its topsaw, still able to saw logs of very large diameter

@coburnlowman

The built in edger fascinated me. How do you gage it so close to the bark setting away? I seen both blades move independently. It seems hard for me understanding how you can figure the width of cut that fast and run one blade just to the edge of bark without really eyeballing down the log and run a slow dry pass or 4. Does it have a laser eye that detects the bark and adjust itself? If so please send me the setup on what I need to get the same results. Edging kills my sawing time. Mostly I'm alone or have my two sons who had rather be rolling naked over a yellow jacket naked than help mill. Lots of times I'll give away the Un edged lumber rather than reloading to edge them. When doing 15 or so boards after just one stacking the barked edging flies out like a giant dropped a box of toothpicks to shot down everything and gather it all up. In short I love your built in edger and would love to build my own like yours.
@logcrete
@logcrete 9 жыл бұрын
Phil, Centering the pair of edgers on the log is easy with a little practice. Its actually fun to see how close you can get (like shooting a gun at a bulls-eye) and helps kill the monotony of 8 hours of repetitious sawing. I'm sure a small laser could be mounted on the edger unit for the no-thinkers. A person could also get into the habit of adjusting the edger during the carriage return centering it on the meat of the log. A vertical edger truly is a time and labor saver especially on a portable mill. That is my brother running the mill in the video. I basically followed him a year or so later with my portable planer. This is actually the second sawmill that I built. I built my first mill in 1979 in a welding class at WITC in Rice Lake, Wi. and sawed for a decade in the 80's. That too, had a vertical edger but instead of sliding in on a track it swung 90 deg. into place on a pivot. On both mills the edger automatically coasted to a stop when not in use and automatically restarted when re-engaged. Mostly for safety reasons, I liked the idea of getting the edger completely out of the way and shut down when not needed. The planer too, I built at WITC the following two years (1980-82) in a machine tool class. I am now retired and just do a little custom planing here at home for old-times-sake. The planer I will keep for now but that sawmill in the video is looking for a new home. It's just too much machine for and old, worn out body like mine.

The bottom saw is on a carrage that slides up and down . The top blade is controlled by stacked cylinders that are attached to the same carriage you only have to adjust the bottom saw and enter a setting ( looks like 4,6,8,10 or 12 ) . One cylinder has 2" stroke , one has 4" and one has six " . 4 gives 4"wide , 6 gives 6" wide , 6 +2 gives 8" ,6+4 gives 10 and all three make for 12"wide

On this kinda of log carriage, how do you index it. I know it's hydraulic. Do you simply look at the log scale wheel , or does it have some sort of index on the control that you built into it???? If you did would you explain it us? Also what pulls the edger blades ? It looks like a hydraulic motor?... Could you please explain what GPM, or just how they are ran? I have an older Norwood band mill. It is super slow. Really want to build something like this one.
