Next we turn to two Hollywood brothers who made their names in some of America's best-loved family classics. Ron and Clint Howard were the child stars of hit shows like "Happy Days" and "Gentle Ben." You might not know Clint as well as Ron, but both had successful performing careers. Despite that, it's their decades of brotherhood that they've chosen to celebrate in their new joint memoir "The Boys," as they explain to Walter Isaacson.

I shared a dorm @ USC with Ron, fall of 73. Ran into him 15 years later at a street corner on Rodeo Drive. I apologised to him of the razzing he received each time he entered the cafeteria. You know, students whistling the Opie tune. He smiled, winked and said "Don't worry Gary. Everything turned out OK." Can't wait to buy their book, and send it back for autographs. Peace

I met Clint Howard years ago at comic book store I randomly stopped into, he was promoting a small indie movie he was in with actor William Katt and they invited me to the theater to watch the film with him. I had trouble remembering who Howard was at first, then I blurted out Star Trek!!! He did one episode playing an alien that looked like a child in the 1960s. Howard pointed at me and said "Nerd alert! Nerd Alert!". Both him and Katt (Greatest American Hero actor) were both very pleasant, approchable and kind.

I worked several film shoots that the Boy's mom did location work on....I recall the stories of how nice she was and the care that was given to even the smallest background worker..

Shout out to their father’s wisdom. Goodness rules. The father son relationship from Andy Griffith show was my childhood touchstone. I’m a female but the respect the characters displayed for each other had a profound impact on the way I raised my children. And somehow, I taught my five children to love and respect each other. As adults, they still do. It’s a reminder to chose programs which projects positivity in a realistic way.

I have always LOVED Clint, and of course Ron in "The Music Man"...I had absolutely no idea they are brothers!!! I was born in 1958, about 15 minutes from Hollywood. Make of that what you will 😉. These guys are the best, each in their own way. Thanks you guys for the best years of our lives!

That was a Marvelous moment in a family's incredible life trajectory, those two terrific brothers always in my TV memories: This casts me to remember in my own childhood . Ron and Clint are the spitting images thier parents- Clint looks exactly like his mom, and Ron his father...what a cool American story.. 🇺🇸🌐🎟🌐🎬🇺🇸

Great interview! I'm the same age as Ron Howard,...well one year older, but I loved him as a kid when he was Opie,...I didn't know we were contemporaries,..until he was an adult. I still watch re-runs of The Andy Griffith Show. Don Knotts,... the towns people, Aunt Bea,...were wonderful characters and so funny. I was never an actor, but my friend and I would re-enact certain scenes and situations, to entertain ourselves. Me and my best friend of 40 years, when we found ourselves renting a early 1900s era, cottage on a road trip we took, that resembled the house Andy Griffith was filmed in,.....we were there over a single weekend,....and we re-enacted various scenes and characters. The cottage was restored to original condition of the 1920s through the 1940s,...it was like a museum you could live in, & you paid to have the experience. Each room in the vintage house looked looked like a movie set. The 1920s kitchen was in that Hoosier style,..White wood cabinets with heavy duty chromed hinges and latches, there was an old fashioned "ice box", on display the kind that a block of ice would have been placed inside of, pre-dating refrigeration. Ceiling fans,...old styled ones,...all the details of an old house. Original appliances, too.

This was a wonderful interview! Ron Howard in The Music Man was a special added gift besides His Monday evening program. Gentle Ben was my brothers favorite program. Also the children born in the late 50s really grew up along side those two, watching the episodes, they were like distant friends. Thank you❣️✨

I'm guessing you've not seen many of Ron's movies? Not sure if he still does it, but for many years, Ron always included a bit part for Clint. And though he was grown up, he still looked and sounded a lot the same as he had in Gentle Ben. And of course his name was there in the credits. But I can see, if you didn't read much about movies, you might not have known they were brothers, since as kids they didn't look or sound much alike.

They seem to be well grounded, ordinary i ovenormal people who genuinely each other. I always loved both of there shows equally growing up, but my favorites to this day is Happy Days and The Waterboy. Too bad Clint supports Ted (Run Away) Cruz. 😮

Old Hollywood is famous for how it abused children in movies & TV. There are a lot worse things they used to put kids through than what happened to Clint. For example, the little girl who was in a Tree Grows in Brooklyn was supposed to cry in a scene after her father dies. So in order to get real tears, the director told the girl that her father had died in real life (he was a soldier in ww2 at the time).

@@lynnturman8157 😱 I know they smoked at tender ages, girls were dressed way to sexy for their age. Beat up emotionally if they were tired during exam times even discouraged from getting a full education. All in the service of making other people finically rich! No such thing as therapy (anywhere in life - you were labeled weak instead of just human).

What ever happened to Genle Ben? Was Clint ever in other sit coms? I would like for Gentle Ben ever be aired on Antenna TV, MeTv or decades? I hope so & I watch Andy Griffith m - f on Antenna TV. My fave Andy Griffith is when Opie was little.

It is not so unhealthy as it could be. It’s hard to be in any successful persons shadow. My uncle became a multi billionaire my dad did not, he was supposed to be a priest but left seminary to find my mom & have us. He was a great friend & mentor, all of my 25 cousins favourite uncle. When he died over 600 people attended, his older brother’s funeral, many years later, had just family. Prior to my uncle passing he said to me & others in the family that he wished he coulda been more like his beloved average earning younger brother because his brother (my dad) has made a huge difference in the world all I have made is 💰. Sometimes we see people through our own lives rather than seeing just their lives & character.

S1 o' Andy Griffith is markedly different from what followed. i never noticed as a kid growing up because continuity was not as important back then (or maybe i had just missed S1 by the time i really started watching tv...). i don't think the show would ever have become as popular had they stuck with the original version o' Andy......also, this country has GOT to get over itself when it comes to pot. i have yet to meet someone whose life was ruined just from smoking a joint. the harder drugs - and even alcohol - are the ones which destroy lives/relationships. i'm just getting tired o' listening to people apologize for enjoying marijuana (and fyi - i don't smoke - although i probably should...)
