Van Clief, who continues to compete in combat sports at the age of (77), was the oldest competitor to fight in the UFC, where he fought Royce Gracie at age (51).
Van Clief was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City.
Van Clief began his martial arts career competing in both full-contact and non-contact karate tournaments in New York then internationally, going on to win several national tournaments and world championships.
Van Clief was a student of Gōjū-ryū masters Peter Urban, Frank Ruiz and Moses Powell, as well as WingTsun founder Leung Ting, Modern Arnis (Remy Presas) and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Joe Moreira).[2] In 1971, Van Clief created his own style of martial arts, called "Chinese Goju", attempting to unify Japanese style gōjū-ryū with its roots in Chinese martial arts.[citation needed] He currently holds the rank of 10th degree red belt (shidoshi or grandmaster), in this system.
On December 16, 1994, Ron Van Clief returned to the ring to fight in the 4th Ultimate Fighting Championship, as the oldest competitor to date to fight in the UFC at the age of 51.
Van Clief's sole fight in the tournament was against Brazilian jiu-jitsu exponent Royce Gracie. Gracie won the match by submission with a rear naked choke near the four-minute mark. Ron went on to serve as the commissioner of the UFC.
Ron Van Clief retired from competition in 2002 after winning the All American Karate Championship at 60 years old. Ron competed in over 900 tournaments in over 40 years on the tournament circuit.
Ron Van Clief retired as a 5 time world karate/kungfu champion and 15 time all American champion. Ron Van Clief has been competing in BJJ tournaments since 2015 and still competes today. Van Clief is also the author and creator of a number of instructional books and video recordings. He was a member of the Screen Actors Guild for over 3 decades.
Van Clief's film roles earned him the nickname "The Black Dragon", and the name inspired the titles of his films The Black Dragon's Revenge (aka The Black Dragon Revenges the Death of Bruce Lee) (1975) and Way of the Black Dragon (1979). He appeared in the 1977 Italian crime film The Squeeze opposite Lee Van Cleef and Karen Black, and was also the fight choreographer for the 1985 film The Last Dragon.
Van Clief has earned over 5 different black belts in his martial arts career. Those include black belts in Gōjū-ryū, Jujutsu, Judo, Kung Fu and Taekwondo. One film that was never released was "The Art of Cliefing", directed by Jason Dash. The producers pulled the funding at the last minute, due to widespread protests in Korea.

He is one of the best martial Arts ever! One of my best friends trained under him for many years. We both got our black belts in Japanese Goju Ryu under Aaron Banks and then he left and started training under Professor Ron Van Clief, the Chief Instructor of Chinese Goju in America, and I went to train under Professor Ronald Duncan, the Father of American Ninjitsu! I followed his career for years and without question he is one of the best to ever do it in this country!

That’s not it. The problems was, has been and even now is that black martial arts didn’t get there due for over 60 years. The reason he made the distinction is that he has seen it, lived it and knows that it has not changed at all. I remember when me instructor bought Ninjitsu into this country The last O’Sensei Ronald Duncan. He was the first ever Koga Ryu Ninjitsu GrandMaster in the USA in the 1960’s and then in the 1980, Steve Hayes contacted him and he referred Hayes to the Masters in Japan and in least then a year he came back claiming to to a fifth or sixth degree black belt Master and claims to be the father of American Ninjitsu. What a joke! Duncan was teaching and training others in Ninjitsu before Hayes was even heard of. He was featured in martial art magazines in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s way before Hayes and that fake Masaaki Hatsumi who supportedly taught Hayes was even in this country! I performed in the Oriental World of Martial Arts with him before Hayes was even heard of! Ronald Duncan is the true Father of American Ninjitsu but did he get his due? No because of the color of his skin. I saw the same thing happen with Ron Van Cleif, because I am from New York, and witnessed all this first hand, this is GrandMaster Dexter Brown, 9th degree Black Belt, Ryukyu Kempo Karate, 6th degree Ninjitsu, 6th degree Goju Ryu, 2nd degree Ve/Arnis Jitsu! I’ve got receipts!

You have no idea what real slavery is. 200 years? 500? 1000? You’ll still be hitching about it then. I’ll tell you something. Black American are only 13.6% of the American population. Not 15, not even 20%. And you go on and on and on about being treated fairly and representing when you’re not even a quarter of the population! smh. One day you’re all going to have to grow up and stop blaming other for the shit choices you make now. Non of these guys would even be here if they were never brought over to the west to begin with. For all the negative you moan about, your life abs the life’s of countless western black people have never been as good. You guys are obsessed with skin colour. You see life through the filter of “being black” and unless you’re able to get over that you’re always going to feel like you’re down trodden because of the bullshit you’ve been fed growing up. You are not oppressed. You never have truly even been oppressed, you started treating each other with decency and respect you wouldn’t have all the crap you guys complain about everyday. Be better.
