RVC was in every martial arts magazine in the 70's/80's and became an epic figure in the Black martial arts community. He had the guts to face a young Royce Gracie at the age of 50 years old even though he could have just made money as a teacher and instructor. He lost badly. So what did he do? Did he quit? Did he tuck his tail between his legs and limp into obscurity? Nope. He figured he had more to learn and went to learn Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He was already a successful martial arts instructor with a huge reputation and was humble enough to put on a white belt and start from the beginning when most men his age are ready to retire and go fishing. He then started entering Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions in his 70's! That's a true martial artist and warrior in my books.

Ron’s athleticism and speed is very obvious and the real deal-competing in these types of matches with low kicks and some ground fighting whichbita not clear exactly what the rules were. Was doing well until he tried to hot dog the low spinning sweep which I have NEVER seen work in full contact fighting

Guess it just goes to show my age but every time the ref breaks it up when they hit the ground a part of me groans. Nice fight both guys pulled no punches it was 100 per cent attack though had Ron not gone for that bizarre rolling kick he'd not have got blasted in the head with the k.o. kick. Still props to him for trying something like that. He's got guts.

@FaiGurKungFu Sorry to contradict you (and no disrepect intended), but there must be more rules as we see the referee step in when the fight goes to the ground. If they were allowed to get on and grapple, attempt chokes, submissions etc, then why at one point does a whole crowd run in to separate them? Great upload. Thanks!

Ron was cocky in the beginning and too sure of himself, but the guy would not be intimidated and kept coming. Ron got tired after awhile, and careless. End of show. Ron's got much better skill, but in this case the opponent used his courage to overwhelm Ron's skills. It's the man, not the style.

Look again 1980's. Van Clief took several body shots with no apparent effect. AND he took several rights on the chin. @siupakcat No disrespect received. The reason I say no rules except death blows is a basis for some rules as opposed to todays standards. As you can see this particular fight was getting out of hand and someone had to part the two fighters before it got really deadly. However they were allowed to kick and punch each other on the ground and this was not meant to be a grappling match.

It was crazy how Ron Van Clief kept going to the ground like that - with the rules of this fight, that was just wild. Bruce Lee wasn't just a movie star; he was an instructor to some of the best during his era. And the video footage of him sparring at the Long Beach tournament shows that he did know how to fight. Maybe you didn't see the fighting video. Jim Kelly, Chuck Norris, Bob Wall, Dan Inosanto and others acknowledged his fighting and skills. Only after he's gone have so many people begun to badmouth him. Very few would have or could have done this to his face when he was alive. And if you need proof of his teaching or skills, you can ask his main student, Dan Inosanto, who is still alive and training in California.

+BJJ_NYC Grapple I didn't realize I was sounding tough. Sorry if you felt threatened by my statements.. My statement was simply to remark on the fact that everything I have ever seen Ron do has always been with a cocky attitude. If you had read the post properly, you would have realized that is basically all that was trying to state. I wasn't there to challenge him to fight basically because I was probably a toddler up the time lol and no, I have not racked up any accolades from competitive fighting. I never made any claims stating that I was better than him nor that I was better than anyone else. In fact, I applaud people like yourself who are obviously into the competitive aspect of the martial arts. . That's just not something that I choose to do. Once again my remarks were mainly focused on seeing a cocky guy getting beaten. That is always good to watch because it puts people in check. Anyway, if you want to respond in an angry manner that's up to you, I don't have any beef with you man. Peace, and good luck in your training.
