I met Ron at UFC 133 in Philly. I was standing in line while my friend was doing the pullup contest for the marines. He was watching with me and we started talking. Very nice guy.

Respect! Forget that he lost to Royce Gracie in UFC 4. Ron Van Clief was a legit badass back in his prime. Look at the footage of his old tournaments. He was lethal. His timing and reflexes, which every fighter strives for, were superhuman. Besides, what other 50-something would have put it on the line and fought a guy more than 20 years his junior, who had annilihated everyone in the previous UFC's? Van Clief probably did his homework and knew it was a tall order to beat Gracie. He went there to test his metal and and his skills anyway and then was humble enough to start as a white belt in BJJ despite already being a martial arts legend. He entered his first BJJ competition at the age of 72! WTF?!!! There are fighters and there are martial artists and Van Clief is a martial artist.

It's a real shame that they didn't put him up against a striker. What a waste of a great show. On the other hand, Ron should have done some grappling by then. I just watched a 1981 fight where he got taken down multiple times.

That wasn't a real fight. The Gracie Patriarch told Royce to handle Ron respectfully (i.e. "Don't hit Ron's face"), and Ron didn't really care to crush the Gracie reputation (it was in his best interest to let that one go). So, even though his ground skills are superior, Royce didn't see what Ron could have brought.

Very good, Ted. Yes, there was a gentleman's agreement that was very hush-hush. A couple other comments on this page have mentioned it, and it was on the video when it was first aired, that they wouldn't go all out. Reason being that Ron was already an established, internationally-recognized innovative Grandmaster and elder in the Martial Arts world; the Gracies would respect that, first of all, and wouldn't throw all kinds of shit, such as strikes and elbows to the face, to topple him. Secondly, as Ron says in this video, he had arranged to begin training with them, so he began his submission to their training with the submission to the fight. I remember seeing it and being disappointed that Ron showed nothing of what I'd seen him do in the movies. All Karate styles have some techniques that can be used on the ground effectively, and he didn't even use those. So, as with most things in life, it was political nice-nice. You may consider that mostly conjecture, and that's fine. But that's my take.

I'm sorry man, but there is absolutely nothing Ron could have brought. Those kinds of statements are WHY the UFC was created in the first place. Striking only? Sure, Ron would have tore his ass up. This was back in the day when people STILL thought having one style or a lil of this and that was enough to be a "complete fighter". You can see the look on Ron's face before the match, his son is trying to wipe the desperate look off his face. Dont get me wrong, I love Ron and all the old school MA guys, but 7 out of 10 times ( and tha's being liberal ) a guy that knows grappling will beat a guy that knows striking ( as their primary fighting base ).

A good grappler can have a huge advantage, but it's not always true and i think it's less true now. knockouts are dominating over submissions. fighters are more well rounded or they are gone....Rolles vs. Pudinowski showed that, if it would have been the same Rolles in ufc 1, he would have dominated just like his brother. I like the old fighter too, but, just like everything, they are no match for the top guys now.

The reason you were disappointed in using it, is "all karate styles have some techniques that can be used on the ground effectively" usually only works on opponents who don't know a pure grappling style and / or have more grappling than striking training. What I never understood about most striking based MA's is why is it SO hard to accept that there is something that counters them? I mean In my years Ive NEVER once heard a grappler say, "Yeah if the fight would have went to the ground I would have won, but striking is what he was better at so I expected to get pummeled standing if I couldnt take him down."

Sounds like if Van Clief was looking for an excuse for him losing... it would have made no different Ron... What you need to do is give credit where credit is due... you thought you was going to win... think again ...

cultspaghetti Trashmovie He said he broke his ankle one week before the show. If it was really broken why go on and fight knowing that he depends on his legs. Also does it look like he had a broken ankle when he fought? A Broken ankle that is just a week old will make you limp at least. He is not only making an excuse but he wants to make himself look bigger by saying he fought with a week old broken ankle. He did not give credit to Royce Gracie at all. He is a sore loser.

+BeyCipher777 true.... but jujitsu teaches u how to fight on your feet too...and it also teaches u how to fight fight when youre on the ground and your opponent is on there feet. now that MMA has come around people think that if u know only one dicipline and that it worth shit anymore. let me tell ya...first off in BJJ or Judo...usually who ever is teaching it..usually teaches you Judo too....because Jujitsu and Judo are basically cousins to each other.....or brothers whichever. and in a jujitsu class yeah you learn how to grapple mostly but you also learn how to strike on the feet and strike while off of your feet....so if him and clief fought on the street knowing whod win based on what theyre taught doesnt mean who would win what... a real jujistu fighter would never go to the ground ina street fight inless the opponent takes u take or knocks u down and u have to grapple them to protect yourself. but a jujitsu fighter is always taught too never go to the ground ina street fight. because u never know if there buddies are gona kick u in the head from out of nowhere... plus in a street fight u can bite and hit in the balls....and if somebody grabs me in a street fight with no rules imma grab a hold of there rib and pull hard.....

+BeyCipher777 cool bro, how long does survival mentality keep you awake when you're being strangled? lol. I know what you're saying bro but idc how tough you are, there's no choice when it comes to chokes. the gracies had countless no-rules challenges from countless martial artists from countless backgrounds and there's not much dispute that they won pretty much all of them back in the days when it was one martial art vs the next rather than the mixed martial arts that exists now

He's lying , i have the match on video he comes to the cage and his ankles aren't taped at all. I find it hard it to believe some one with fight with a broken ankle and it not be taped up. He just needs to admit he got his ass beat trying to use fake kung fu.

Wow! Really?! He broke his ankle a week before the fight, & still went on with the show? Wow. I'll have to go back & watch that fight again, look for telltale signs of that broken ankle. which, of course, there won't be. Because he didn't break his ankle a week before the fight. Jeez, just when you thought the guy deserved some respect for having stepped up & fought he has to damage his own reputation with some bullshit story like this. Grandmaster, my ass, Grandmasters wouldn't lie like that.
