I know exactly what you mean! I've always appreciated beautiful melodies over a bunch of hollering. Just because an artist is black or singing soul doesn't mean it automatically requires a bunch of belting and yelling. I love when the soft, gentle, loving side of our culture is represented in music.

Belting SAFELY is another physical protocol that can be accomplished by skilled singers as well. ATTEMPTING to do either by people who really don't know what they are doing, or actually don't have the strength or resilience already built in the vocal musculature, is vocal suicide, can cause vocal hemorrhage and ruin a career. EVERYTHING that is pop. blues and jazz music today historically comes from the gospel genre of music. None of it requires YELLING. Passion...yes, belief in the lyrics, yes, singing loud, soft, heavy, light...YES!! but true physical YELLING??? never!!
