these are cute, as well as the whole Microcosm line of little machines. the M22 and M81 are really cool, too. and you can just run any steam engine on air pressure, it's ok

Suggestion for putting the flame out... Put a steel thimble over the wick (and let it sit there, it will protect the wick from picking up crap and dust) Paddy

Opening shot shows the thimble on the fuel tank. Most of the alcohol burners for the various engines come with one. Also slows the rate of evaporation.

Out of curiosity, how long does this steam engine run before needing to be refilled?

With the boiler half-full and with an appropriate size flame, I would shut it down after 2 to 2-1/2 minutes (before it runs out of water). It is a small model and the heat content of various alcohol fuels vary.

Hi Ronald I'm wondering what is the purpose of the spring and nut like what does it do and what happend if I tighten it or loosen it. Thanks

The spring pressure holds the base of the cylinder against the brass plate but still allows it to reciprocate back and forth for the steam and exhaust ports to operate. There is no intended adjustment here. You do not want to tighten it too tight. Keep all moving surfaces, axles and joints oiled. Thanks for watching. Ron

I use 3-In-1 oil and lubricate all the moving parts each time before running. Just a little oil is plenty.

3-In-One or Singer Sewing Machine oil (or similar light oil) in all moving parts before every run.

Can I use wd40 as oil

WD-40 is a solvent and a cleaner. It is not a good lubricant. For this engine I use 3-in-one oil or Singer Sewing Machine oil before every run (clean up the mess afterwards) and then reapply before every run
