Ah one thing I forget to mention in the last comment about planning a trip is the age of the drivers in a convoy. As we get older our stamina and concentration tend to fall off quicker so when planning how long to drive (time rather than distance) take into account the ages of those going along. Once I could drive from Perth to Karratha in less than 24 hours, if I tried that today I would almost certainly crash due to fatigue. The older we get te more rest stops we need and the length of time behind the wheel each day we can safely drive reduces. (wondering where my other comment went).

Ronnie it is also worth remembering that EFTPOS doesn’t always work in remote areas so carry some cash.

Having spare cash on hand can get you out of a pickle, too. If you're by yourself, being able to give someone $50 or $100 to tow you out to a main road, or give you a jerry of fuel, or hitch a ride into town, can save you a lot of money in the long run.

"If you're scared of snakes, stay home". Yeah, let em come & get you there 😂 That snake bit kit is no good back in the car if you go for a walk. Take it with you. I have two. One in the car & one that lives in a little grab bag of basic survival items I carry when I'm going to be any decent distance from my rig. PLB is the same deal. No good back in your car. Bit pricey for most to have two so just remember to take it with you.

Great advice Ronny...amazing how people spend $150k on their 4x4 but won't spend 1000 bucks on a Map/PLB/satphone/snake bit kit....all the things that will (hopefully) keep them alive, dont need to be on Canning or Simpson as 20km out of city you will be "remote" with no mobile reception and limited emergency help !

When we venture into Africa communication 2 way radio also help a lot, rule for us, you should have fuel to do 1000km, cause in that 1000km you will find a fuel stop, and in Africa when you do encounter a fuel stop you fill up regardless the distance you travelled, cause you might just find a fuel stop with no fuel. Visit Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique. Another rule is we look for camp spot from 16h00 (next to the road) you do not drive at night if you can help it. Africa is awesome.. I follow the Aussie overlanding trips and you ouks are blessed. Africa is wild, big 5 walk through your camp, what an experience.

Cheers for the info! First thing I tried to do after watching this was google a decent 4wd map of WA and... I couldn't, for the life of me, find one! Do you have any recommendations for a good 4wd map of WA? EDIT: I found the HEMA stuff. Are they the only quality options on offer?

Nic vid Ronny, One important thing to add Make sure to do a full health check on you and take necessary medications
@KarlEller
@KarlEller Жыл бұрын
And extra spare medications, ideally stored separately from your regular meds. You don't want to get half way through a trip and realise that your important medication has fallen out of your bag 1000km ago, or something has been damaged and is no longer usable.

Fantastic video, heaps of useful information as usual, so many great comments too, probably one of the better ones is cash is king, make sure you have some. Water is the elephant in the room, you need at least a litre a day per person just to drink, either carry that much or know how n where to get extra from, particularly on remote trips

Thanks Ronny, another great video. But I think you inadvertently left out the primary rule of convoy travel. Each vehicle should be able to see the vehicle in front and the vehicle behind. If you cannot see the vehicle behind, slow or stop until it appears - and so on down the chain. If it does not appear, send someone back to locate it. Keep it simple - no need for wait for possibly unreliable sat phones or VHF. Also, if dealing with bulldust, rotate vehicles in the convoy over the course of a multi-day trip so the newbies are not eating dust every day - if you want them to show up next time. Cheers.

To all who read comments. I spent my working life in Northern Manitoba Canada Thompson, to Winnipeg 798 km's. Only 4 gas stations. No cell service for the first 600 going South. Heading South, the first gas station was 24 hrs year round as it was the bus stop. Snow will cut your range in half. If I may. If you know your fuel range, in summer or good conditions, cut it in half.

@Ronny Dahl I would love to know what brand of digital (online and offline) and paper maps you would recommend and what makes them better than other options. I'm currently in the beginning stages of planning a trip from Vic to Perth mid autumn next year following the coast and possibly cutting inland at some points to do some tracks. Apart from maps what are good sources of information about good areas to visit / stay? Mostly plan to free camp however not opposed to staying on at stations or paid camp grounds.

The only problem I'm having is that I plan to travel for a couple of months without a strict plan. We just see where the wind blows us. The rough idea is either from perth to cairns or the other way around, but I have no clue what roads we're gonna be on and where we want to go

Luckily I drive a real 4X4 truck, not a bigger 4X4 car that just got called "a truck". With my 10 ton truck as big as a road train's tractor I'm able to stopp at any truck stopp without pissing truck driver's off. Thus on the way from home to the destination area and on the way back home I do not to have to calculate any stopp over. I can just go.

You mentioned speed limits: in NSW if your combined mass (car and van) is 4.5t or more you are speed limited to 100kph.
@KarlEller
@KarlEller Жыл бұрын
The 100 km/h limit in NSW is for vehicles over 4.5t GVM, not GCM, the trailer you're towing doesn't come into it.

In the case of towing a single trailer, the driver driving a vehicle, with a gross vehile mass (GVM) over 4.5 tonnes or a vehicle and trailer combination with a gross combination mass (GCM) over 4.5 tonnes, must not exceed 100 km/h, regardless of the signed posted speed limit. www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/roads-safety-and-rules/vehicle-safety-and-compliance/towing-a-caravan#:~:text=In%20the%20case%20of%20towing,the%20signed%20posted%20speed%20limit.

Something I learned years ago for travel is to become vegetarian while out in the sticks. Especially mid eastern food, a lot of it stores dry so it doesn't take up much weight if you can filter water from a river and it doesn't take up space in your fridge or cooler. Eliminating meat and eggs just simplifies everything, then if you're a real big meat eater that first meal back home becomes something to look forward to and keep you optimistic.

As for wine and other things like spirits that only come in glass, although I like to avoid plastic as much as glass, it is a safe option to transfer them into plastic bottles, same with eggs, use plastic bottles.
