What really amazes me is that this happened more than 22 years ago. 22 years is an eternity in any form of elite sports. The fact that nobody has come close to beating or equalling this in such a long time speaks volumes as to the magnitude of this achievement. This is one of those very rare sports records that might infact never be broken.

re-watching in 2019.. i now realise how the ref contributes to this speed - and is aware of the potential almost as early as Ronnie. (i'm in no way saying this is quick due to the ref, - that's Ronnie, - but this ref was great, efficient, quick and allows Ronnie to play as he wished).

Shouldn't be any other way. If you are to become a snooker ref you have to admire the sport. And indeed I think it's every refs dream to count to 147.
@vesas5214
@vesas5214 3 жыл бұрын
True. I timed some spottings and they were about 5sec (from black going into pocked to calling the score). Then I timed some other ref in other match and for him it took about 9secs. With 15 blacks that difference means 1 minute. The ref doesn't walk behind Ronnie for every shot like they normally do (nowadays at least). I believe this record will never be broken due to slower refs and the fact that nobody is basically trying to beat it, there's no point in it in tournament play. (I'm in no way saying this isn't a remarkable achievement, because it is)

This break is so effortless. Nothing feels rushed, it’s all so fluid. Cue ball control is unreal it’s perfect for every shot, you couldn’t place it better if you placed it with your hands. I’ve watched presenters try and replicate this break but they’re running around the table looking almost comedic and he’s doing in a world championship setting just chilled. You can tell he’s a special talent, I know snooker players always look 3/4 shots ahead but he seemed he saw the entire break and just played it out exactly as imagined.

In sporting history this Break by Ronnie is so overlooked as one of the greatest sporting achievements of all time . I can’t comprehend why usain bolt running fast in a straight line gets so much money in sponsorship and media attention but this is somewhat overlooked .......This required so much skill , talent , foresight , practice and genius mindset. This break has never been 5 minutes and 20 seconds. It's always been 5 minutes 8, give or take a second on either side. I don't understand why the wrong time is constantly reported.

I think maybe a break starts when the player comes to the table and ends when the white of the last shot stops and not when the last and first ball drops.

The rule states that once the cue ball has stopped moving after your opponent's last shot, you are technically 'in play' and therefore the break is underway. Using this video timer as a gauge, I make this break about 5 mins 15 seconds. Either way, fast.

World Snooker actually has it listed as 5:08. See this article : www.worldsnooker.com/gilbert-makes-historic-147th-maximum/ "It was five minutes and eight seconds of pure snooker majesty. "

5 minutes 15 seconds.. his break started at 1.22 as his shot clock would have started as soon as the white was a dead ball. And I can only assume it finished at 6.37 or 6.38 when the white ball stops again. Either way. Absolutely the most naturally gifted person I have ever watched in any sport. And that break will never be beaten

The ref didn't have time to say "120" between the audience cheering and Ronnie taking the next shot. Fabulous.
