SOY YA LATER HEADER... HARVEST TIME HEADACHE

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching!!! Today, we have quite the predicament. A local farmer was moving equipment from one field to another and had the large "header" of their combine on a special trailer used for such transport. This trailer has a double pivot or is what some call a wagon-style trailer. While going down a steep, narrow, gravel hill, the header and trailer rolled over. Nobody was injured, but this isn't going to be an easy task. The header is a specialized piece of equipment that isn't designed to be handled the way we are going to have to handle it. It is very strong and heavy on the bottom side, which is on the ground. This is the part that attaches to the combine. The rest is mostly plastic and rubber with some gears and drives to cut and harvest the crop, which, in this case, is soybeans. Ethan and I take our trusted flagship Rotator unit #11, a Peterbilt 389X with a Miller Industries Century 1150R rotator heavy towing and recovery unit, to roll the header and trailer and place the header back on the trailer. This job presents many challenges, from the steep, narrow, gravel road, to the odd, difficult to handle header, to the unique wagon style trailer that the header must be set back on. We definitely have to work the angles on this job from lifting and multiple redirects to try to control everything. This is going to be a challenge.... Watch to see we handle this unique situation!!!
Also, this video is being released two years after losing my dad and mentor. He left this Earth on November 9, 2021. We still miss him dearly, but we are moving forward and growing, as he would want us to do. I smile as I write this knowing that he would have loved a challenging job like this.
We have a difficult and dangerous job and we take it very seriously, that doesn't mean we can't have fun and enjoy our work. We strive to be polite, professional, efficient, and safe...and still can have fun. I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

Fun fact that brand of header offers an option to have a built in trailer instead of the separate trailer like you have there now I see why they do that.

I'm only 8 minutes in, but this is definitely a challenge. The only strong structural element is along the backside of the frame (where it attaches to the combine), but those are completely in the wrong position. Everything else is pretty lightweight and is designed to flex and conform to the ground.

A very awkward, ungainly balanced, off-level implement with no good way to pick it up. It's amazing that you were able to do this lift as well as you did without more damage. Plan A was too difficult, but there are many, many ways to 10. Stay safe.

Wow , well done , a heavy super delicate piece of intricate machinery saved. Couple things, seems to me the trailer is a terrible design. It might be wise to counter weight the right side of the trailer with a 1000 lbs of dead weight to help balance the weight distribution. As a carpenter I always had at least 2 2x4x10 in my truck at all times no matter what. They saved me in many different ways. Ron ,I was so worried the blades would be bent by unusual pressures. If you carried 2-4 2x6x16s in your long bed storage area you could have quickly made a 16' angle to better support and spread the force on those teeth. It all worked out amazingly but the farmer said the tolerance was 5 degrees, to me the bent appeared to double that. Ron ,I have such respect for your skill and effort and conscientious service. Once again ,Ron Pratt saves a farmer 10s thousands of dollars.

Nice job. I was talking to you at the beginning of the video to pull the trailer out from the load and lay it flat then back the trailer back under it. I use to haul wide load trusses. When we had a real heavy load it would take 2-3 forklifts to load on the trailer, that’s what we had to do. Love watching your channel. You go into detail training your sons in a great calm way. God bless and have a great day! 🙏

You would think with big awkward balanced heavy peices of equipment they would put lifting eyes on it to make it so you don't run the risk of damaging it if something like this happens. Great job getten er done with no additional damage minus the valve stem.

I used to build that style of draper header for a different manufacturer. The cutter bar is pretty tough, the other strength point is the back beam, which is usually covered with hydraulics and such. In the ones I built, there was a number tie down points on the cutter bar support. An interresting job.

Honestly that was one of the most interesting lifts I’ve seen. Obviously lifting trailers is a huge feat of skill in itself, but when there is so few options like there were in this situation - to do this with basically no additional damage to the equipment, it really shows the technical ability that, honestly everyone at Midwest has.

Well that was a tricky one. Very interesting to see all the different re-directs you had to use to "thread the needle". Glad it all went without any major mishaps (aside from the pratt-fall, which i'll admit i do love.. i don't want u injured but it does add some comedy value sometimes lol. Ethan may have to start taking over on the falling down side, he has a lot of catching up to do on that front). Awesome recovery there Ron & Ethan that was in a bad spot but I had confidence that you both working together would make it come together without further damage to the header ! I don't like the trailer designed up front that being uneven ground and having washed out ruts those two front tires that close together gives lets the trailer have a tipping point which I think was some of their problem on that rough unelven ground ! I redesign the front of the trailer so that the front tires could be further apart to give more stability on uneven ground !

That was one challenging recovery! Thank goodness no power lines or traffic to deal with - you already had your hands full. About half way through I got to thinking that your experience with your rotator and Ethan's recent training, the two of you were working together very well on figuring out the best way to get that thing back on the trailer. In hindsight, seems to me that getting it free of the trailer and upright on its own was the better way to go. Would have been great to get it to rotate back over with the trailer, but the weight distribution of the head just wasn't going to happen. I love watching you work with seasoned farmers and truckers, they typically end up being a big help in getting the job done. They are great problem solvers and notice the details on their equipment very well.

A great job done on a tricky situation. The bonus was the customer stopped before getting into further strife and then stayed out of the way but helped out when needed. Massive effort all around by both parties. And Ethan is keeping his head on a swivel too. He has learned well. God blessings to you and the business. Slow and steady wins the day. I think the original idea of trying to roll back onto the trailer was a good one. But so many moving parts. End result of the header back on the trailer achieved.
