Today I am colouring in Rooms of Wonder by Johanna Basford, and I am going to get started on some base layers on the little Mushroom Cave.
For this picture I will be using a mix of Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer, Polychromos, and Caran D'ache Neocolour 2.
My little sample pack of Neocolour 2 literally arrived just as I sat down to get started on this page, so I decided to include them (instead of using just the Albrecht Dürer and Polychromos as I had originally planned).
I have seen so many gorgeous versions of this page, and I really wanted to make this page my own, so I'm bringing out my favourite earthy tones again, as well as experimenting with some water soluble mediums for our base layers.
Using Water soluble medium for your base layers will definitely help you speed up the colouring process. It completely covers the white tooth of the paper without flattening it, so you get a lovely base to then add your coloured pencils on top of, and removes the need of adding multiple layers of pencils to cover the tooth.
So in part 2 of this page, I will show you how to go about adding Polychromos pencils on top you these water soluble mediums.

I have already colored this page but I still enjoyed watching how you brought this page together. Neocolors are on my wish list. I had bought a couple of color families to see if I would like them and I loved them!

Thank you so much. You could definitely use Polychromos for all of this. It would just take a bit longer. Go with the earthy green tones (Earth green yellowish, Permanent green Olive, chromium green and Chrome oxide green are all good options). And anything I use Albrecht Dürer for, just pick the same colour in Polychromos.

Love how you did this page! I recently bought a handful of Neocolor IIs and I love how I can put down a lot of color fast. A set of them are on my wish list now. I tend to do the background all at once like you are doing, then I'll often do sections of the rest of the page at a time.

The only times I’ve ever had the water rush cause any issues is if I forget to wipe it off. Keep a paper towel right next to where you’re working, and wipe the brush every few seconds. I sometimes find the slightly bigger brush better, as it doesn’t release as much water, but it’s the same thing, just don’t squeeze it too hard, just let gravity feed the water down, and wipe wipe wipe 😊❤️
