I'm doing the first bonsai work on these trees, a Northern Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa), a Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) , an English Yew (Taxus baccata Judith) and a Gingko (Ginkgo biloba).

The Yew reminds me of that Rush Hour 3 scene, "Who are you?" "Yew." "No, not me, you" "Yes, I am Yew."

I often use my paintbrush handles instead of a chopstick. I have thick ones and thin ones, and the handles are lacquered and smooth

You stuffed a lot of trees into this video, much to my enjoyment! The greenhouse really extends re-potting season on the front end, which gives you more styling time as the trees develop in summer. Excellent video.

Nice job Nigel you got lucky with all of these beautiful trees and the roots being so much nicer than some of the other trees that you have worked on in the past. Great video keep that green thumb thriving.😊

Nice repottng session! I'm also not the biggest fan of wooden chopsticks for Bonsai, so I'm using metal chopsticks 😃(or the other side of my root rake) It's also nice to see you working on a Gingko again. I hope it'll grow well and stay healthy!

Nice repot of the catalpa and redwood. Cool yew. The weeds love your potting mix for the Gingko. Nice little tree.

I favor the Catalpa tree. Mine has withstood the tuff winter weather outside in the microclimate. Mine was grown from seed also from my nieces friend when I was given it in a pot. A super cool tree.

Great repots! I have a very similar gingko that I recently repotted that looks to be maybe just a year or so older than this one. I was scared that I root pruned it to hard, but after seeing what you took off here I feel much better. I think all your trees will be much happier in their new soil!

Howdy. At some point would you talk about air pockets when repotting? You seem to take a more relaxed, but judicious, approach. Thank you.

There is a few things to say about this. I think I have seen something like 6 different Catalpa starting videos on this channel. I haven't seen an update yet on any of thme. Then there is the yew. It is almost sad that it has pollen cones. The tree has pollen and seeds on separate plants. the little red barries add a nice touch. Then there is the ginko. I was excited at first as I remember you had a larger ginko you were working with. All at once about two years ago, there was nothing more said about it. Do you still have that tree?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 ай бұрын
This is a tale of not being successful. All my Catalpa trees have died so far. I think the heated glass greenhouse will help them out in the future. The Yew also slowly died over the summer after digging it up. I took too many of the roots off on that one. The larger Gingko got attacked by borers. It had about 10 tiny holes with sawdust coming out and the tree died quickly after. I try to keep all the trees alive, but sometimes you just have to keep trying and learning!

P. S. One more question: why no larvae today? Have theses trees had a very different environment or are their roots less desirable? Thank you.
