This Japanese Maple Atropurpureum bonsai forest is something of a difficult bonsai. Unlike my other Japanese maple forests which have responded well to pruning and pinching to increase ramification and branching, this one has not. In this video we look at root ramification vs branch ramification in bonsai, and see what we can do to improve this bonsai.
In this enlightening video, we delve into the intricate relationship between root ramification and branch ramification in bonsai, focusing on the transformative impact of root pruning on a Japanese Maple Atropurpureum bonsai. Join us as we explore how pruning the roots of a poorly ramified Japanese Maple Atropurpureum bonsai can stimulate more vigorous above-ground growth and enhance the overall aesthetics of your bonsai masterpiece.
Discover the secrets behind promoting healthy root and branch development, and unlock the full potential of your bonsai tree. Whether you're a seasoned bonsai enthusiast or a beginner eager to learn, this video offers invaluable insights into the art and science of bonsai cultivation. Perfectly explained Jason! I love the animations 😀It's a shame that this maple species doesn't ramify as much as the more popular ones cause I really love their deep red/purple color

Thanks Adam. Fortunately there are so many other beautiful cultivars of Japanese maple, each with their own unique colours and growth habits. 👍 I don’t know if Trompenberg or Bloodgood which also have such dark colouration are similar or respond well to leaf reduction and ramification.

Fantastic video Jason! I've never seen a forest made out of this variety. You've done a great job on the repot and I'm sure this planting will develop into something unique and special

Cheers Alex. It will improve over time, but will always lag behind the others simply because it is a more difficult cultivar of Japanese maple with stubbornly larger leaves and less ramification in a smaller tree.

Very informative Jason and I reckon that given a few more years that will look a lot better as a grouping. The only point I might make is that the 'better' forest grouping are often made with superior trees. I might fill a group in with less impressive material but I always like to have two or three feature trees to draw the eye. Cheers

Yes I agree a better forest would have been constructed from trees which had been allowed to mature for a couple of years first, rather than the less mature trees and saplings as seen here.

@@TheBonsaiGarden no the point I was making is we should be trying to use trees that would also look good on their own rather than filling it with the low quality material. Ryan Neil does an interesting chat about this point.

You pegged it right -- Atropurpureum don't ramify nearly as well or as fast as some of the other varieties. They are better used as garden trees. Still, you have a good start with your forest.

Thanks Susan. It does look pleasing in leaf but it is never going to look as developed as my other forests. 👍

I've read / watched something that said they react like a one flush tree. Once you prune it, it generally doesn't give a second flush in the same growing season. I've noticed this with my Atro's. They're just slower / harder to work with but you can still make a nice tree.

I just find Atro’s are generally lacking vigour, are first to suffer from sunburn, especially the dissectums and, consequently, I avoid them!

My experience is quite similar 👍 They do make great garden trees and can have some really nice colour, but are quite dark red as opposed to the vibrant reds of Deshojo and Beni Maiko for example.

I got myself a little group planting at the Birmingham bonsai boot sale, it contains 6 little trees which for me as a hobbyist does not bother me, I could add another at some point to make an odd number, what's your opinion Jason, excellent informative video as usual.
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 4 ай бұрын
Thanks John. It bothers me far less than some of the more anal and pedantic bonsai enthusiasts. The “ideal” is an odd number because an even number suggests regularity which is not natural. And particularly the number 4 and number 8 sound like the words for death in Chinese and Japanese hence they are considered bad luck in the East. In any event, beyond a certain number it becomes difficult to count the trees without a considered effort. It’s much more about what feels and looks aesthetically pleasing. And if the trees are purely for individual pleasure and appreciation it really doesn’t matter one bit. 😊

It's to do with irregularity. It's harder to create a forest with a low number of trees if you have an even number. Visually an odd number tends to look more natural, and less 'placed'. Once you have enough trees the eye can't detect it, it makes no difference. I have a Hawthorn forest with 18 trees which looks great. 8 is a decent number to work with, it may be considered bad luck in the East, but we are not in the East. It allows for a 5 and a 3, two odd numbered clumps forming a whole.
