I think in showbiz lingo this is called "breaking the fourth wall" when Mr Roper looks over and grins directly at his laughing audience. Probably done in some other sitcoms but done often in this one. It must have been cool to be in the studio audience, I imagine one of the cameras was ready to zoom in on Roper's smile.

Maybe the funniest moments in TV history. I honestly can't think of any show that broke the 4th wall in quite this way. Stanley was the only one who ever did it on the show. This really highlights how absolutely ridiculous their relationship was, exactly the same as Al and Peggy. Helen wanted romance from Stanley that he wouldn't give and sex from Stanley that he didnt want to engage in. Which is ridiculous since Stanley was old and not attractive. Why would she want sex from him? Then, as these clips show, he insulted her repeatedly, yet she still wanted to have intimacy with him. That is ridiculous. She also acted like she didn't understand why he didn't want to have sex with her, and he made it very clear time and again he didn't find her attractive. He straight up called her faded and drab to her face. As bad as their relationship was, it is ridiculous they were still together. Stanley treated her poorly, insulted her appearance repeatedly, was a cheapskate and took her for granted. They argued and attacked each other on a regular basis and had mutual contempt for one another, like when Stanley laughed at the notion that she had any value sufficient to get a job.
