If you are wondering how cars are shipped overseas, this video is for you. Short documentary on how a Glovis Roro Ship which means roll on roll off. This means the vehicle must be driven under its own engine power. Lets see how a car ship discharge operation works. I will go in explain how the vehicle unloading process works and how cars arrived to any major sea port. For this type of operation you need, drivers to discharge cargo, van drivers to return the drivers back to the ship. You will need foreman to help direct the drivers safely break out the cargo to minimize damage.
You will need a hatch tender to direct vehicle traffic during discharge operations. Of course a radio to easily communicate and direct the operations. There is much more, but I thought this would give the KZfaq community a good understanding on the logistics operations of roro car shipping. These are how the Kia's come into the USA. Not all the vehicles on ship are for our port. The ship when full from Korea, usually stops at 4 to 5 different major sea ports to unload the cars.

One would think that the cost of making those wood wheels wouldn't be a cheap option either? I understand some comments below about height restrictions which makes sense. How do the drivers park the cars so close together? Are they strapped tightly enough to not hit each other? Now i have appreciation for my car's journey.
@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive 3 жыл бұрын
Each car is stowed with about 4 to 5 inches between the sides and 16 to 18 inches front to back. When cargo is stowed there is a spotter instructing each driver exactly where where to park the cars. You would think that cars would hit each other out at sea, but they don't. As long as the lashings are secured , check and maintained throughout the voyage. The cargo just all rocks together with the ships deck in unison. The biggest area of damage comes from drivers turning the wrong way when they are pulling cars out of stow of the initial breakout. Each driver is trained to turn the wheels to the left during breakout. Sometime there are beams or other things that distract drivers and they make mistakes and damage the cargo.

Some ships have different cargo on board that goes to different terminals. For example we offload all Kia cargo at terminal 7 . Same ship also has Hyundai cargo that has to be discharged at terminal EB1. Also certain docks can only handle so much weight or psi and very heavy stuff can only be unloaded at specific terminal’s because of this. The fun that comes with logistics.

Thanks for the video! I'm shipping a vehicle from Southampton UK to Tacoma, WA USA, which is the furthest port on the route. Is the vehicle moved throughout the voyage to have it positioned for offloading at the last port?
@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive 3 жыл бұрын
Usually once you car is stowed on the ship it does not need to be moved until it being unloading to your port of destination. The shipping company usually plans how to load cargo based on the port rotation for discharge. The shipping line prefers not to have to re handle cargo to minimize the chance of damage. Sometimes the port rotation will change because all the car yards are full and no room for new vehicles to be unloaded. This would be a scenario where your car could be re handled in order to shuffle cars around the ship to unload the rest. The ships are a huge 5000 piece puzzle inside with so many cars. Hope that helps. What car are you getting from the UK?

Cars are stowed with the passenger side door to the wall of the ship. Once the driver gets out,. the next car parks 4 inches away and repeats all the way across to the other side of the ship. I will have to look into this one. Once the cars leave the ship, they are driven to large parking lots at Auto Warehousing Company. The dealerships place orders with specific dealer options and accessory packages. These accessories are installed by AWC technicians. I am not exactly sure about Australia. I would imagine they still come over on a similar size RORO ship to your guys local sea port. Once they are unloaded from the ship they will be loaded onto a train or truck and shipped to the dealerships. Glovis has the shipping contract for North America. All of the Subaru's are off loaded in the USA at the Port of Portland and shipped via rail or semi truck. But the offloading process should look just like this video. It is the same no matter which country you are from.

Theft would be pretty hard. All major sea ports have security stationed at main gate entrance. You have to have a TWIC card in order to gain access. Once cargo is discharged from the ship, it is stored in a secured parking lot until picked up by customer with all proper paperwork or shipped out for dealership inventory, via train or truck.

My Audi q8 just came in on the SFL composer! Wonder how long is it going to take to get to NY? Is t there a shortage of truckers that have to pick up the cars? Also, I’m surprised the sides of the cars are not protected. Can scratch easily
@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive 2 жыл бұрын
Depending on the price range of the cars, the more expensive cars are fully wrapped in protective coating and car covers. The lower price Kia's dont get those covers. Cargo is hardly ever damaged. Our workers wear tyvek paper suits to minimize chance for paint to get scratched.

What sort of fire suppression systems do they have on the vehicle decks? High expansion foam? Also, do they secure those cars to the deck to avoid shifting in heavy seas?
@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive 2 жыл бұрын
I am not exactly sure about what type of fire systems are equipped on the ships. I do see what look like sprinkler heads on each deck, but I am not sure what comes out of them. As far as the cars, they are secured with lashings on the front and back of the vehicle to hold them in position during shipping. Some of my other car ship videos should show the lashings.

At 2:15 you can see a pile of straps, and at 2:26 you can see an example of how they tie them down. If you notice most new cars have about a 2"x2" square cover on the front and back bumper, inside that cover in a threaded hole. They screw in a big I bolt and that's what the straps hook to. One of those I bolts comes with your jack so if you get stuck, you screw that in and that's what you hook to, to get pulled out of mud or snow, since there's nothing on cars to hook to anymore.

New Roro ship's mainly have High expansion foam system. Some older Roro vessels are fitted with Fixed CO2 fire fighting system. Regarding cargo, they are always secured using using lashing belts for cars, heavy lashing belts or chains for Heavy cargos like big trucks, excavator etc

I’m going on the ship the green cove. What all do you do when they are loading the car into the ship?
@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive 2 жыл бұрын
It is the same process as discharge. Drivers drive cars onto the ship. The foreman directs the drivers into each spot. Once all the vehicles are parked into position they are strapped down to the deck with lashings. I have only observed load back a couple of times. We usually only discharge cargo at my location.

@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive 2 жыл бұрын
Not exactly, you will have to provide the bill of lading to the shipping line. You will have to pay the port skid fee. Your car will have to pass us customs soil test. Your importer will be finishing up your cars entry packet at this time. This process was usually about a week for me with my 3 car as that I imported from Japan. The port will contact you and you can pick your car up. You will need a Twic card or an escort to have access to the terminal. Once you have your car you take your customs entry packet to US customs and border patrol they will give you their stamp of approval. From there you can go register your car at the DMV and you’re good to go. Good luck it’s kind of a stressful process the first time.

I can't speak for all seaports. But at our location o Foreman as well as superintendents supervise the drivers. We go over a safety meeting before each shift and talk about expectations to keep speed down and to make sure everything is safe and cargo is not damaged. If I see any driving behavior that is not in compliance, I address it immediately with the foreman and we talk to the driver and let them know to slow it down. If a driver continues to drive too fast or unsafe, we will fire them from the job.

Interesting. How long does it take to travel from Japan to the United States? Also are they affected by unloading problems they are having in California? Thanks and have a good one
@JDMRightHandDrive
@JDMRightHandDrive 2 жыл бұрын
Usually takes about 10 to 14 days to come across the ocean according to the ships crew. The Port of Tacoma is not as backed up compared to California. The most I have seed a car ship wait to be unloaded is between 1-3 days. Its usually caused to labor shortages. Port of Tacoma has a military contract, which takes 1st priority of the labor force. Car ships are last priority and somedays we don't get any workers. Covid exposures are also causing labor shortages. If anyone test positive, all workers that had contact on the job site are required by the Union to take 10 days quarantine time even if they test negative. Fun times down there on the water, super busy everyday.

It really depends on what company you purchase the car from and what shipping lines they do business with. From what I see, all the different shipping lines operate the same. If the car is really valuable you may want to consider shipping in a container vs RORO. Good luck!
