Fully agree. It is pure Rory- his interaction with the audience is great. He never saw himself as an unapproachable rock god. That Shadowplay clip is definitely one of the greatest rock n roll pieces of all time. Gerry Macavoy also kills it, absolute monster on the bass.

He's definitely not underrated as an underrated guitarist. I wouldn't say he was underrated at all, anyone who has heard him recognises him as a master. He is today a bit lesser known, he's been forgotten about by a lot of people today. (Not be me, nor by most on here I expect).

Not just as a guitarist, but as a person.. I've heard was one of the nicest people ever. There is a story Brian May tells, that he saw Gallagher before he was a professional and accosted him, to ask him questions and gain some knowledge. He spend a solid chunk of time to talk to him just after a concert, where I imagine all he wanted to do was take a shower. Then, when May made it big with Queen. Again he bumped into Rory... He spent exactly the same amount of time to talk to May before and after he had gained worldwide fame.. What a bloody lovely guy...

Rory is an absolute hero to those of us from Belfast, Taste got their start in the Maritime Hotel Belfast (where Van Morrison and Them also started.) In the 70s when nobody would play Belfast Rory always played at least once a year and even in the late 80s this shows were seldom less than two and a half hours (so no surprise his strat neck had to be hung in his mother's shed for 6 months to dry out.) He was a great acoustic player too, and the show always featured a few songs with teles and a Danelectro. We are still trying to get a statue of Rory erected outside of the Ulster Hall (where he always played.)

Just a few reasons why he's number one all time guitarist for me....RIP Rory you are so missed.

Rory was a force of nature. I cannot think of any purer self expression and commitment to an art. His commitment to touring and playing to the audience transcended his savage musical skills. He lived his life on a journey, powered by his love of music. The complexity of this shy man, who lived on stage, and hibernated in private. A hero of music.

Rory was incredible. I saw him live in his prime and his electric playing was so intense, it was mesmerising. Next thing he would pick up his acoustic and play a solo set without his band, with harmonica in tow, but the intensity of the performance never wilted. Back into his electric, before rocking out with his mandolin on ' going to my own town'. He even played a damn good saxophone on his solo album. There are guitar players who play the blues because they want to, or maybe because it might be a good career move and there are guitar players who play the blues because they have to. Rory was one of the latter. I reckon that is why he could never take up with the stones, or indeed Deep purple, who it is rumoured had an interest in him as a replacement for Ritchie Blackmore. Gallagher had to play the blues to an audience who had to hear it. Arenas, Stadiums with pyrotechnics, dry ice and the rest was not his bag. He was a blues man, the real deal and he is still sorely missed by his fans. He also had a lovely humility about him, thanking his audience after each and every song for coming to the show. A very unique talent

They say never meet your heroes but I would make an exception for Rory. So humble and down to earth. I remember reading in the Melody Maker a report at one of his gigs, the reporter was quite shocked to discover Rory drinking in the bar next to the venue, before the show, without a bouncer or security in sight. I was lucky enough to see him live a few times and he never failed to entertain and amaze. Outstanding guitarist. A cliche often used but in Rory's case, his guitar really was an extension of his mind and body.

Joe Perry mentions that tour in his biography. Specifically the gig at Central Park in front of 50,000 people. He said Rory blew Aerosmith off the stage. The crowd kept screaming for Rory and he was allowed play long after his cut-off time at Aerosmiths expense. When Aerosmith finally took the stage the crowd started throwing bottles at them screaming for more Rory. "That night Rory Gallagher was just too good to stop" An absolute guitar hero.

I love that you briefly covered Rory Gallagher!! My dad listened to/watched recordings of Rory Gallagher Live At Montreux constantly growing up, and I'm so grateful he did. I could listen to Shin Kicker endlessly. Something interesting I heard was that he actually had more acidic sweat that wore down the guitar even more than usual, and in turn, affected the sound. But a Frankenstein instrument can become an extension of you because of the love of music you've shared with it over the years 💕 Rory is a legend.

This era of blues based rock is absolutely my kinda thing. While I'd heard of Rory Gallagher, I'd never actually checked him out for myself. Now I definitely will! Thankyou Justin for bringing new artists to mine ear, so that I may rock the fook out, to something new. You are a gem and a gentleman. I love you

I’d add “Overnight Bag” to yr playlist from Photo Finish. Would also add that he was a great showman and a truly great blues / r&r singer. Thx for showing Rory some love!

Thanks so much for pronouncing Gallagher as we do in Ireland. English people can sometimes change our names in a manner that can feel a bit demeaning in a kinda colonialist hangover (Still prevelant with comedians like Dylan Moran, Dara O'Briain etc) so it carries extra care to us Irish when you show him that extra respect. Also it's not a very common name so just an FYI, Donall, also spelled Domhnail is pronounced to rhyme with Dough as opposed to Donald, so Dough-Nall is how that's said. Amazing video and great to see some love for Rory. Cheers Justin.

Rory was the guitar man for me - not only massively talented but humble with it. "Heavens Gate" from his last album "Fresh Evidence" is the ultimate blues growl of a riff.

I was lucky to catch Rory play a small club in Rhyl of all places shortly before he passed. An incredible guitar player, an incredible songwriter, an incredible performer with an incredible legacy. An great man who did a lot to bring the joy of music to NI during the troubles. I'd recommend seeing Gerry McAvoy's Band of Friends with Rory's former bandmates . The Dutch guitarist Marcel Scherpenzeel stands in for Rory and does a fine job of keeping Rory's spirit alive. Thanks to Justin for spreading the word and helping introduce Rory to new audiences.

I saw Rory heaps of times, especially when he had weekly slot in the Marquee club in Soho, got to see the Band of Friends in Cork many years ago, can't remember who the guitar player was, perhaps from Nine below zero??

Thank you for this one Justin. I saw Rory live a good few times and as the years go by, I realise I didn't see him nearly enough. For me he's one of those artists I can't just play one album by, I need to spin more. For someone who allegedly played within a narrow range, there's a world of colour and texture in his work. And apparently a nice guy to boot. So sadly missed.

One of the finest blues/rock players whose live playing was exquisite. Ireland had Rory & Northen Ireland had Gary Moore, two guitar greats. Joe Bonamassa has played Rorys Strat on stage & covered his songs, he cites Rory & Gary as massive influences. Rory is a legend of the Strat & was always a consumate performer.

Was lucky enough to see him 3 times. Jerry Hall was in the audience when I saw him at the Bottom Line in the early eighties. He was a major influence for me as a young player and for those of us who grew up in Europe we understood why a street in Paris was named after him. Live he was beyond. To say he connected to the audience would be an understatement: he channelled the audience. He was one of a kind. There will never be another Rory.

Thank you! Rory was such an incredible talent-a true force of nature on stage and a very gifted natural musician. I highly encourage anyone who watches this video who is not familiar with the G-Man, check out the multitude of live videos here on YT and then check out the studio recordings. He was a master at both electric and acoustic guitar and was one of the top slide players as well. He also played mandolin, banjo, electric sitar, harmonica and sax.

The Rolling Stones story is true. Also Jimi Hendrix once was asked what it’s like to be the best guitar player in the world and he said you’ll have to ask Rory Gallagher. I’m from Cork and he is truly the biggest inspiration for me guitar wise coming from the same place. Tattoo’d Lady would have to be my favourite record of his, but he can’t go wrong really. Thanks for the Rory vid 😃

Yessir. Said He was waiting to see what was going on so he contacted Mick but he was busy and didnt want to fool with him so he said to ask Keith. Keith was messed up on drugs and booze so Rory didnt waste his time. He had a gig lined up in Japan already so he said screw the stones and went to Japan.

That Hendrix story often gets repeated but has been proven false. Hendrix was invited on some talkshow and when asked the question pointed to the guitar player in the tv show's band and said those lines but with the name of said guitarist, not Rory.

@@jrkchannel37 Apparently its true was in an interview at the Isle of Wight festival, wasn't allowed go it as I was only 14 at the time but had the pleasure of seeing Rory play live at least a dozen times only on the UK would have loved to have seen him play in Cork. Did see the Band of Friends play in Cork though.
