He did love playing more than life itself, his last show's were evident how bad off he was, no other entertainer ever would have done that! And for the fame, turning down the Rolling Stones made that pretty clear!

I was fortunate enough, as a teenager, to see Rory play live in Central Park, Manhattan, Sept. 7, 1974. He opened for Aerosmith, and I actually did not know who he was. I can honestly say that he stole the show, and I never forgot it. When Aerosmith came on stage they were booed! RIP Rory!

@@carolgrosklags8933 Hi Carol, thank you so much for sharing. I love to hear stories like that! That would have been around 1990 maybe? I never got to see him, because I was too young, when he died in 1995 when I was just 7. I often go to see a great tribute band called Sinnerboy, the guitarist is Barry Barnes. I go to the Rory festival in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal also. My Mother knew Rory very well however. Her and her sister would go meet up with him at shows he played in the early days. They knew him very early in his career, back in the Irish showband days when he played with The Taste, but it was the first lineup of Taste, probably in the mid 1960s, not the later Taste lineup. Rory used to come play in Cookstown County Tyrone and met up with them there. My Uncle by marriage saw him in Belfast in 1976 however. He gave me the ticket a few years ago. Just a little pink paper ticket. I put it in a little frame. I don't know if you know of the other Irish guitarist Henry McCullough? He played with numerous bands, but probably most famous as he had a long career with Paul McCartney's band Wings. My Mother was very good friend of his. I always thought Henry was fantastic also, maybe not as well known as Rory, but an amazing player also. Henry was a good friend of Jimi Hendrix, apparently Hendrix was blown away by his playing and even signed him to his own record label. There are pictures of them together online. I believe Henry also started in the Irish showband scene in the 60s. I think my Mom told me he played for a band called "Gene and the Gents". Thank you again and have a great day. 🤗

Honestly, I think he's in a different league. I don't say that in a snob way.. 'like my guy is better than yours' just because, I know all music is entirely subjective and don't get me wrong, I liked Clapton in the early days when he still played Gibsons, and Beck was fantastic too, back in the day.. but they never spoke to me quite like Rory. But, there's something about Rory that transcends them guys. It's not even possible for me to illustrate in words. It's so real with him.. especially when he plays the acoustic stuff on the National. Really touches you deep in your soul. You feel it. Like the old guys from the Delta or some of the Chicago bluesmen. It's deep. Like magick.

@@Sinnerboy88 Yes, I agree. Very well put. When you hear him at the start of a song on his old national, like too much alcohol for example, its like the guitars talking or something. Every time I watch this I am struck by his utter confidence. He doesn't retune the guitar to open D until after he does his little talk. Rory loved a drop of alcohol himself, but it never stopped him touring constantly - he was famous for being one of the hardest workers on the circuit, and it never seemed to affect his performance, if anything it enhanced it. Perhaps it did get to him in the end but then again who wants to live forever, and if that's the price to pay for such extraordinary talent, then is'nt it perhaps a price worth paying? I heard a story, which I don't know for sure is true - maybe someone in the know can confirm or deny it, that after a gig some punter asked Jimi Hendrix, 'How does it feel to be the greatest electric guitarist in the world'? To which the legendary Jimi is said to have replied, 'I would'nt know, you'd have to ask Rory Gallagher'! If true then praise indeed, and well deserved, rest in peace Rory, I'll love you till I die.
