For all the talk of Chelsea being such a bad team, it’s actually very easy to identify Chelsea’s biggest problem by far. A significant percentage of their “problems” would instantly be fixed with a number 9 like Osimhen. Chelsea’s biggest problem by far since Tuchel left in September 2022 is they have been absolutely dreadful at finishing. Yesterday’s display of dreadful finishing was yet another display of how consistently bad they’ve been in front of goal for 1.5 years. If people actually watch Chelsea each game, guys like Enzo and Caicedo are the least of Chelsea’s problems. They actually pass around opposing teams most weeks but they are not end product players. They are players who control the rhythm of games but are not goal scorers. Chelsea need an actual number 9 and they will very quickly be challenging for the Champions League again.

Before the game, I predicted that if Sterling played, Chelsea would beat a weakened Liverpool team, but if Sterling did not play, Liverpool would win. In the end, Sterling played and it was 0-0 with a final 30 minutes ahead where the pressure rises and experience kicks in, then Chelsea took Sterling off and as I predicted, without him, Liverpool won. Only once in 6 games have Chelsea lost against the top sides this season and Sterling, not only played in all those games, but carried out the decisive actions that stopped Chelsea losing, including a single handed demolition of Tottenham, reducing them to 9 men in their struggle to contain them and then providing the assist to put Chelsea ahead. Only a few games ago he did the same for Chelsea against Tottenham. Why is it always Sterling and nobody else that consistently steps up in these big games to make the difference? Because nobody else can play at the level of these teams where you have to not get affected by the pressure of high pressure games and start missing opportunities and finals and games against top teams are high pressure games. Even Cole Palmer spent the whole game giving the ball back to the opposition80 percent of the time, be it through a failed pass or blocked shot because of the pressure. How the manager could think all of a sudden that it would be them makes no logical sense whatsoever. His decision to take of Sterling off when the game was about to open up as it always does in the last 30 minutes and expect the others to do what they could not do all season against the big teams lost Chelsea the game, not the players. The chances they missed would have been scored if Sterling was on the pitch as had been the case all season in the biggest games, but the manager handicapped the team by taking their team mate who was most likely not to miss off. End of. Nothing complicated here, in fact it is blatantly obvious, but of course the media and pundits will not talk about it because it's Raheem Sterling. Many clubs allow reserve managers and youth coaches to put there stamp on a team. But klopp has a system which is done through out the club.
