Hello all! :D
Believe it or not, the Range Rover P38 is actually my favourite car of all time, a superb mixture of internal refinement and off-road performance that essentially created a Rolls-Royce to climb Mount Everest, all encapsulated in a neat and handsome bodyshell which doesn't stray too far from the proven Range Rover lines, but is still distinctive in its own right.
But despite the P38's many endearing features, even I will note its many faults, with fit and finish problems, mechanical issues and build quality errors creating what was once the most unreliable car on sale, made worse by the fact that it was costing customers up to £50,000 to buy, resulting in Land Rover, and its parent BMW, turning what was meant to be the face of Range Rover for at least a decade into a simple stop-gap.

Having had a 4.6 in my family for 18 years that's covered over 190k miles mechanical issues were hardly ever a problem its mainly electrical gremlins which nowadays are much better understood and less of a problem. Design wise aside from the front end I think its minimalism has stood the test of time and the interior is one of the best offered by range rover extremely ergonomic light and airy. They also drive superbly no they won't corner like a modern SUVs and aren't dynamic but the ride is exceptional and you're able to cover great distances is extreme comfort over any terian in way that modern cars simply cannot replicate

..my P38 is 25 years old and only issue i habe had is EAS which, after been forced to learn about it myself and fix, i havent had any issues..its very easy to fix, parts are available and cheap and rides just fantastic...i admit, it was a nightmare initially, as i had no idea how to fix it...eventually, you realize that systems inside are very simple actually...

What a fantastic review of a truly misunderstood car. Nothing makes me smile more than climbing into the luxury of my vogue se and hearing it come to life, waiting for an envitiable warning message on the dash to welcome me home.

I love our P38, it's from 1997 and a 4.6 HSE. Even though we have already renewed everything, engine with all attachments, transmission, converter as well as air suspension... and so much more, we love the car incredibly much. I don't give it away anymore! Wherever we go, there is only one P38, ours.:-)

A good P38 is most useful heavy duty towing workhorse I've ever owned Great Driving position & comforte, can drive them anywhere, all day long & still do full days work at end of long days driving to the job. Still not found another vehicle to match a good P38 😎👍

I've not seen the Rolls in the flesh but several of the Bentleys. They are hideously fugly but probably the dream car of every pearlescent white Evoque owner..

To be fair the look far better in the flesh than in pictures. They are very spec sensitive though. The colour and wheel choice makes all the difference between a classy restrained machine to an in your face tower of vulgarity.

Looking at these Bentley's in more detail, they do have a similarity to the black London cabs. Prefer the cabs to be honest.

Out of all my cars, it is the slowest, the oldest and the worst handling, but I bloody love it. Out of all of them, if it got stolen, I would be gutted. Mine is irreplaceable.

I've been fortunate enough to have owned four RRs, 2 Classics and 2 P38a. My first P38 was a 4.6 HSE with a LPG conversion and was my daily driver for ten years and to date is one of the two best cars or motorbikes I've ever owned (the other best is my current RR Classic) The HSE was such an amazing, versatile and overall, generally very reliable vehicle. Serviced regularly and aside from a few air suspension issues it was such a great all-rounder. We would regularly travel from London to Ireland in it with all our luggage as well as two Akita dogs. Obviously its no sports car but the comfort combined with the power made it ideal for any and all journeys. Lock the suspension in Motorway Setting and select Sport Mode and it was like nothing else I've ever driven. It was a very sad day when I had to get rid but the legendary slipped liners were my undoing and I couldn't afford the expensive rebuild, which led me to my second P38. However, the other P38 I owned was the 2.5 diesel which I chose as I needed a replacement quickly and I liked the model but could only find a diesel in my price range at the time. A woefully inadequate engine with nowhere near enough power although I do appreciate the 4.6 had spoiled me! I would not hesitate to own another P38 but I would be very particular, it would have to be the 4.6 and preferably have a LPG conversion, and have had the top hat liners done and it would have to have been very well looked after because with a car like this, cheap is most definitely a false economy in the long run.

I don't understand how so many people hate it. It's incredibly capable off-road, all problems are cheap and easy to fix on top of being well documented, and, at least in my opinion, it's the last Range Rover that still had a sense of class. The L322 and the ones after it just feel like footballer's SUVs to me (the new 2022 would be an exception though). But oh well, at least I got to buy myself a 1998 2.5L Holland & Holland for 2000€. Some work was needed but still great value. It's their loss.

@@evang9708. I have done engine, gearbox, EBC brakes, stainless steel exhaust and always use Shell V Power. Done about 3,000 miles now on new engine all going ok. Average about 22 MPG on a long run and about 12 MPG around town.

Good video. despite all the issues that the P38 has it is my favourite car and has been since I was a teenager. I've got a few extra facts for you. Before the development of the P38 began, one of the ideas for it was to make it an MPV. There is even a sketch done by George Thomson in 1985. Although George Thomson’s Pegasus design remained pretty much unchanged, one of the things Land Rover couldn't make a decision on were the headlights, and almost went with a design similar to that of the Classic Range Rover's headlights. The test mules were made to look like military vehicles. This gained the attention of the IRA when Land Rover were doing noise tests in west Ireland. After being stopped by the IRA Land Rover moved the tests to Scotland. When testing the R380 gearbox in Germany, one of the prototypes got up to 140mph with the 4.6 V8 which was originally going to be sold as a 4.5. One of the main reasons to why the V12 was scrapped was due to Land Rover needing to sell it at a minimum of £100,000 which was not possible as the financial climate in the mid 1990s wasn't good enough.

As a n old mechanic, and a fresh P38 owner, having bought a car with high mileage and several issues. I can say the one redeeming feature is how nice it is to work on. Lots of room everywhere, and everything can be taken apart one piece at a time. I had regrets when I was going over it and seeing how much had to be fixed, but having fixed it I see my regrets were unfounded. :)

ISTR a cabbie told me the Metrocab started out as a modified Range Rover. Might have just been a cabbie's story, but the styling does look like a direct crib from the R/Rover.

There is certainly a resemblance, but then again you could make that metrocab comparison about a lot of 90s SUVs, most look bland and square compared to those that came earlier or later. I don’t think the rectangular headlights help.

I had a 1998 4.6 HSE from 2013 until 2019. I used it daily and the only time it failed to proceed was when I fitted a pattern-part air flow meter to it. Once replaced with a (über expensive) genuine part, it was again 100% reliable. It didn’t ever have any rust issues, and the only real problem I had with it was water ingress through the sunroof/roof. That was the reason (after spending thousands of pounds trying to eradicate the leak) I sold it on. The person I sold it to still uses it daily and it is still on the road. The thing is, many people don’t keep them properly maintained. They have huge running costs, and most people think that because they’re old and cheap to buy, they’ll be like a Focus to run. That’s why so many end up a horrendous money pits.

The problems with the 4.0L engine was because it was a bored-out 3,5L. A custom one-off bore-out will be perfect, when you are doing thousands to a strict budget then tolerances get sloppy

Maybe time forgot of the P38, but certainly not collectors; good examples are quite expensive and sell quickly. Perhaps the reason why the P38A is often forgotten is because it had the shortest life span of any RR and also the fact that it looks very similar to the L322.

My 1999 4.6 is still going on 250,000 miles, if you get a good one then it'll look after you. People try to be cheap - they may be inexpensive to buy but maintenance can't be skimped on.

I have owned a 99 P38 for five years. Each year I have it towed to the specialty repair shop to get it running lol. With that said, actually very few parts have broken, and it is stoutly built.

Checking it out won’t save you. 😂 Their problems often eventually surface. That said GET ONE. The most beautiful car in looks and drive ever. I have had a ‘95 P38 for nearly 20 years. They can drive you mad but once you fix ‘em you’re in love again. Lots help on the net to get this done. They are truly beautiful. They are a kind of hobby car and as long as you accept that you won’t be phased by issues.

Mine is over twenty years old and running strong. Did the head gasket a couple of years ago, replaced a door lock actuator and the MAF.

I had the classic for 10years and would say here and now I preferred, that over the P38. The reason is quite clear, there was less to go wrong, I liked the easily cleanable interior, suitable for kids or dogs and the space inside was capacious when I had to clear a house at short notice. Springs could be changed in short order. Curious factor was that it mattered not if I was in an SD1, Classic or P5 I could always get from London to Scots corner on a tank full. NB nothing would induce me ever to buy a BMW.

This is actually my favourite Range Rover model. It had a good combination of rugged looks and luxury. The new ones no longer have that rugged feel. The reliability may be terrible but it was easier to repair than a new one.

I maintain one for a friend, it is at 365000km,original gearbox. Regular engine service @5000km and transmission fluid @25000km.In hot climates it is mandatory to make sure the auxillary fans come on with aircon, otherwise a small wiring modification with 2 aux relays.

Have had two p38 absolutely wonderful cars, bothe of mine were and are dhse, never let me down, but I do service them regularly, I think they are a proper range rover, after the p38 the l3 22 and later models seem to look like every other generic suv

I had an 02 p38. The Bosch electrics improved the reliability. Ive had 2 later model v8 sports but think the p38 was better off road. Never had any issues that you woudnt get on other cars. Alternator and starter at about 170k kms on the p38. The air suspensiin is great if you do the maintainance, pretty simple really. Must say tho I love my twin turbo 3.6 diesel 2010 sport. Like any modern car get a good diagnostics unit. I use the GAP IID TOOL. Saved me thousands already.

Some great imagery but I think it's worth pointing out that its body and chassis had nothing in common to the previous model and Reitzle had effectively no influence on the Autobiography range development - all done within LRSV. Also the repainting was done entirely at a subcontractor in Coventry.

The P38 and all subsequent models all suffered from the exact same problem...OVER-ENGINEERED and expensive to repair. It was and still is a product of its time.. you know a product is really bad is when FORD and BMW start to choke on it.

A real misunderstood car. Not developed by BMW so they couldn't wait to develop the L322 on their E53 X5 platform, and distance themselves away from the P38. High tech electrics for a car of the time, flummoxed dealers and garages who were use to the classics simple layout. EAS understood and never serviced then fails people moan! And it was replacing the original icon. Never really stood a chance just like the XJS replacing the E type....shame really, I have owned 3 P38s and currently drive a 4.6, my favourite RR for understated classy looks and refined over the classic. And from a time when driving and owning a Range rover was for the wealthy and not on PCP like the new common ones !

Mine used to always pop fuses…turns out wiring harness had rubbed through in the engine bay and shorter on the chassic. Had 2 like that in a row so obviously not a new problem. My third and final (2001 biography) was brilliant…until I rolled it 😳

Unfortunately not Land Rovers finest hour. For a time you couldn't give these things away, and by the early noughties you'd see more of these sat on the floor, where the air suspension had failed and they weren't worth enough to have them fixed. So many were bought to just be smashed off road then scrapped, leaving them now a very rare sight. Because of this prices have risen steadily over the past few years.

I worked alongside former members of the P38A development team at MG Rover in the early 00’s. Rumour had it that “P38A” was in fact the number/site reference of the office at Gaydon which was allocated to them in the early days of the project 🙂

I worked on the P38A project covering vehicle package, design feasibility and ergonomics. The project was named for Block 38A at Solihull (now demolished) where the design and engineering team was based under John Hall. Land Rover did the same for the original Freelander codenamed CB40 (for Canley Building 40) which is where that car was designed.

Must admit that my ideal choice would be one of the lowly V8s without all the trick air suspension shenanigans and electronic doodadery. I guess my beloved ex-MoD SIII 3/4-tonner taught me the value of simplicity in a tight spot; I hate Chelsea Tractors with a passion but if the market dictates, the manufacturer must follow 🙂

my uncle used to have one, and he had a love hate relationship with the thing, as an off road car it was amzing, it was just alwaus broken and costed tons of money to repair. He lives in Uganda now so he bought an Toyota Land cruiser. You know because a Toyota always drives

Shame there's no mention of the Linley Special Edition. I thought I'd found one once a few years ago, randomly for sale on a garage forecourt. Turns out that the car's previous owner had somehow managed to find a Linley steering wheel (god knows where from!) and fitted it to their Autobiography. I do kinda wish I'd bought that P38 now. Oh well :-/

My dad had a 4.6hse when I was about 11 to 15 ish, it was the absolute dogs and I don't remember him ever having a problem with it aside from it not liking being parked near pylons, the immobiliser/remote key would act up. It was silver with black leather and Mondial alloys. I remember just adoring that car and he used to do lots of miles, even at about 15mpg, it was just so epic to have. Drove a couple years later and they are actually quite rough and ready ride wise despite the air suspension and the steering land rover slow, it was just the absolute bollocks in my memory

No Landrover has ever been reliable, it's just that older ones were much easier to fix and had less to go wrong but things often fell off or stopped working, P38 added a whole lot more failure points all at once.

Rubbish! I had a 4.6 HSE for 6 years, and I used it daily. It only ever failed to proceed once, and that was due to me fitting a pattern part to it (air flow meter). Once it was replaced with a genuine part, it was 100% reliable. The only real issue I had with it in 6 years, was bloody water ingress. It leaked through the sunroof and every other bloody point in the roof. That was the reason I binned it off in the end. It is still on the road to this day.

Only if garish chrome and fake wiod panelling (on the outside, for God's sake why?) define the category, rather than the whole package is your definition. A dressed up crude wagon is all those Jeeps were, and globally the RR is the first as many markets never saw the Jeep anyway. In terms of refinement, and reputation the RR was far ahead.

first series wasn't a luxury car, it had a plastic interior designed to be hosed out. What it was is a car for the farmer and his wife to go to the shops in without breaking their spines going over the rough stuff, also modified to be a six-wheel ambulance or fire tender.

Yeah, but it very quickly became a luxury item bought by the rich as an accessory, and that immediately from the start.

it became a luxury vehicle after 1981 when they introduced the four-door model and put a luxury interior in it, this was 11 years after its debut. In the 1970s the RR cost the same as a Volvo Estate. In 1982 it was the price of two Volvos.

@@dcanmore Yes, it became a luxury vehicle, but it was already a luxury item though it wasn't particularely luxurious. Do you understand what that means? It was bought by the rich and famous Long before 1981 actually already from 1970 and onwards. Many coachbuilders like Tickford and Wood & Pickett had some of their biggest earnings making them even more luxurious and bespoke. That's why Range Rover built their Vogue because they wanted the money and the market was already there. Range Rover even made a sticker they sent out to all their customers saying "My other car is an Aston Martin" because they found out that the Range Rover was the most common "other" car amongst Aston Martin owners.

Once you ditched the air suspension and put in the police pack , they were ok , you had to watch the gearbox aswell as the engine , they ended up , once fixed like a luxury defender v8 with an auto box

Air suspension was one of the best things about the P38. It's 4 bags, a compressor and a valve block... If you can't work on that you'd better get a brand new car 😂

I was led to believe that the P38 was named after the building number it was build in, although I can also see that it was an amalgamation of Pegasus and the 38a prototype names. Could an ex-Land Rover (or current) worker please confirm if the building fact is right. I'm not sure you can technically call it an SUV, as that term did not come into existence, at least not in general usage, although I would refer to them as such, at least referring the earlier Classic/P38 as I have always though of them as luxury version of the Land Rover and used for other reasons than a car, i.e Farmers or the Police. The SUV's these days are basically just used as cars, with maybe a few exceptions, so are just Crossovers - standard production car underpinnings fitted with large bodies

The project name 38A was derived from the building where the project team (both Design and Engineering) was housed - Block 38A at Solihull. It was always P38A as a poject, not P38. The original Block 38A was demolished to make way for the Jaguar F Pace / Range Rover Velar facilities, and the name then applied to a portacabin, which has recently been removed.

VERY NICE VIDEO - THANK YOU - AS AN ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 1996 d1 SD I CAN RECALL BEING IN THE DEALERSHIP SITTING IN A SHOWROOM P38 - WHILE i NEVER LIKED THE STYLING IT WAS PROBABLY THE MOST COMFORTABLE DRIVING POSITION I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED - THE DEAD PEDAL AND SEAT AND POWER TELESCOPING WHEEL ALONG WITH GREAT VISIBILTY WAS IMPRESSIVE. ALAS THE P38 IS A STEP CHILD IN THE LANDY WORLD - NOT SURE IF THEY WILL COME INTO THEIR OWN SOMEDAY BUT LIKELY GIVEN THE SQUARE SHAPE. IT WAS SAD THE ENGINE AND SUSPENSION WERE SO SUSPECT EARLY ON. KEEPING THAT CRAPY LAND ROVER ENGINEERING TRADITION ALIVE

Why do I struggle to believe this whole development story. It always looked like nothing more than a weedy facelift of the original. Just like the current one is another facelift of this one. I can somehow not believe that BL actually gave a hoot about this all, well at least the ones there not on strike that day.

Interesting fact:- a lot of major parts left over at the end of the P38 production run would find themselves in some 02 and 03 plate Discovery Serengeti Td5 models I know this because my dad got a 03 Discovery in 2004 and it only started having issues in 2021 and when it went in for an examination, parts of the engine were found to have manufacturing codes from the P38 run... Got to admire the build quality - 17 years between build and major engine trouble

Apperently when bmw bought range Rover they had to do a stop sale and replace all Lucas electronics in inventory.

Anti theft system so good that even the owner cant drive it because it drain battery in 2 days if left in a city with a lot of radio waves, central computer BECAM so "resistant" that if battery isn't 100% when cranking it lossing security code which mean no driving until a code is rewriten, also some smart ass installed non standard relays in BECAM no where to buy it, I can go on and on with falures, at the end the car have 6 computers each have its own gremlins, after owning P38 I understud why India is a new owner of that company. In a rear cases when P38 working it is a decent car.

Re the P38A..... unfortunately Land Rover/ BMW used all the people who purchased this vehicle as Guinea Pigs !!!! It was a bridge to far for Land Rover !!! But they elected to continue to building a vehicle that had more faults than positive points!!!! I know because I bought a 1996 HSE P38 Range Rover!!!! It broke my wallet and my heart!!!! I had owned several Classic Range Rovers prior to buying the P38 in 1998 with only 28000 kilometres on the clock!!!! If Land Rover had a conscience.... they would compensate every P38 owner for the costs and heart ache that they incurred while owning the vehicle!!! Interestingly enough I still have my P38 Range Rover!!!!! But it’s down at the back end of the paddock on blocks!!!! And it ain’t going anywhere fast!!!! The P38....Land Rovers biggest con EVER!!!
