Here's a tough repair. Finish matching and touch up is one of the hardest jobs. But with the addition of the "hot snot" look out!

A suggestion, I've had some luck using micro-mesh pads after final sanding working up through grades until it closely matches the existing sheen instead of buffing. As you know trying to match a soft sheen or satin isn't easy but I find the more I work with touchups the more I learn which makes it so enjoyable! I've been learning so much from your experience and it is much needed because at 73 I don't have a lot of time learning the "hard way"! 🙂🙂 Thanks so much for all you share, I've been enjoying it!!

@@RedRose4711 It is great to be positive, I did NOT dislike his video, but most likely a professional Luthier disliked his mistakes, that ruin many vintage instruments, He admits over and over " I just don't Understand" and " This is a hack Job". I am an old Luthier with 40 years experience, family ties to Les Paul, and a PhD in Physics and Neuroscience. Jerry's early videos make me CRINGE. Proper methods and techniques are available. Please believe Jerry when he says "I just don't understand"

I've humidified my belly bulge in the steam room and when I looked in the mirror, after just walking out of the steam room, there was "NO CHANGE". Pants didn't fit any better either. (lol). Excellent work. This video is the PERFECT example for showing people that an improper/hack "repair" makes a proper fix ten times more difficult. I've seen a few really nice instruments that were rendered permanently damaged because some perhaps well meaning individual tried to fix them without having the proper skills or knowledge.

I have a very old red tag Yamaha with a bridge bulge. The pull of the 12 strings and years caused it and there is no over night repair. I packed it with hot wet towels every night and in the cold weather I did it a couple times and day. I had the luxury that it's my guitar and it live with me. This is a real pain in the ass but it beats playing a Chinese guitar. This went on for six long months. The 1967 Yamaha is back in full voice. I put 9 gauge strings on it and tune it a half step down. I capo it and the world is fine.

I had the same hump on my Takamine and got it almost flat with a damp towel and a cloths iron. The bow went from .125 to roughly .015". I did have the bridge off in order to apply the heat and pressure. Like you already said; I keep light gauge strings on it. 2 years later and it's holding up.

Great video, some suggestions: try and get an assortment of used dental picks from your dentist, for scraping glue. You can get inflatable airbags ( come in different sizes, think paintless dent repair cars) place by crack and add pressure. Use aluminum tape on both sides of crack to deflect heat. Then use heat gun to warm up glue.

I use a hair dryer as a heat gun for things that I don't want to heat up too hot. Hair dryers only get to about 140F because they don't want to set your hair on fire or blister the scalp. A heat gun gets to set things on fire temperature. The repair, from my computer monitor point of view, looks almost like it's just another dark wood grain line. I suspect in person a quick glance(especially through my cataracts) might deliver the same conclusion. Good job.

For matching a matte finish repair, I’ve had good luck with finish and color matching, as usually; and then hit it with two light spot coats to the area with Mohawk’s matte finish pre cat lacquer rattle can. It has an additive that creates a matte finish; no buffing, just light spray over and leave it be. For what it’s worth.

I asked a luthier if he could redo my frets and he said it would cost more than the guitar is worth. Unbelievable job matching. Invisible on this end. Big thumbs up. Little tip I use old strings for : I've found they are ideal for cleaning and reaming crud out of carb orifices, especially the wound ones, whose winds have a filing or rasping effect. The wound G (3rd) is usually the one most used, due to its smaller diameter. You probably have set of torch tip orifice cleaning tools you use for this purpose, but for anyone, like me, who doesn't, this is a cheap and effective alternative.

Credit where credit is due, the first “repair” was technically “solid”! 🤣 Great job! I am getting addicted to your repair videos. They are both rewarding to watch and serve as a reminder to me “no, you should NOT try to fix that yourself. You’re in over your head, get a pro up front.” Yes, I’ve dug myself into some holes with my “projects”. Most recently I was using the damp wood and iron trick on a 3-piece solid body guitar to raise some dents. Whatever glue was used let go before the dents steamed out and I had a 2 piece body and some spare wood to whittle 🤣 I did get it glued back together but it seems it wasn’t well jointed in the first place and I had to use a strip of matching veneer that I tapered to fill the wedge shaped void (jointing the pieces at that point would have ruined the outside curve lines) After scraping it flat to the top and refinishing it turned out great, but that was a heck of a punch in the gut for a simple “steaming out the dents” job! Thanks for the videos, I’m in northeast Arkansas and may send some work your way soon!

Another great vid showcasing a fantastic display of your abilities. Interestingly, about halfway through the vid, I said to myself, "that's a solid wood guitar (laminates seldom crack all the way through), and if the edge of that crack has glue on bare wood, then you're never going to open that crack, so it's best to sand it level and refinish". Of course, you came to the same conclusion and that's what you did - and a far better refinishing job than I could probably have pulled off! I guess there's something to be said for 30 years of daily experience! Anyway, regarding the humidification fix, you left out a very important step. After placing the bowl-with-sponge inside and closing up the soundhole (I use a trimmed lid from a plastic storage bowl), you then place the guitar on a level surface somewhere, place a towel over the top below the bridge to protect the top finish and then place 15-20 lbs of distributed weight on it. The weight helps the wood get a new "memory" over several weeks of treatment. I use a large, heavy book, then place other weight on that. Refresh the water in the bowl every few days and let it sit for a week or two. Lastly, after removing everything, allow the guitar to re-acclimate to the relative humidity for a few days before restringing with light strings. I've done this three times and it's worked every time, in one case, reducing the bellying from 1/4" on each end to less than 1/16". I don't know if the fix will last 50 years, but the first one I did was done over four years ago for a friend and his top has maintained its relative flatness so far. I understand that this method isn't ideal for a waiting customer, but it's a decent hack for us amateurs, especially those on low budgets!
