this is a video about my homemade rose engine mainly built to do guilloche engine turning work. It took 8 months to build and another 2 to perfect it!
The sample workpieces in the video are just practice pieces in 1mm sterling silver sheets.
I still need lots of practice to achieve perfection.
Enjoy!

I just came across this video. Very inspiring. I grew up in a jewelry store working primarily on clocks and doing much of the engraving. After my family closed the store, I attended school and became a machinist. I'm very interested in going back into the watch and clock field in another year or so after I "retire" as a second career. I love the craftsmanship and art of fine mechanisms. I've been searching for rose engines for a while now but they are impossible to find. That said, I have been wondering about how to go about building my own. I'll be following your work. Hope to see some more soon. Thanks for sharing your work, it is most excellent.

Hi Lawrence, thanks for the comments. It is not an easy task to build your own rose engine but not impossible, you have to study those machines and come up with your own design according to your specs. I wish you good luck with your endeavor and hope one day to see your rose engine!

Thank you Frederic, this is the best description of a rose engine I have seen. I more or less understand how it works now. I still don't quite understand how you use the cuter when using the engine in a "pumping action" but will look for more videos on the subject.
@liliss67
@liliss67 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, for pumping cuts the cutter and headstock stay stationary and only the rosette barrel and spindle assembly slide axially by the action of the touch piece against the back side of the rosette while revolving thus creating ratchet cuts. Hope that makes sense.

Love the Chuck KEY. Your machine looks to be really nice, I love the cams and assume they are made of a type of polymers, nice depth of cut setting design you have excellent control over the depth. Even the name that this type of machine work is elegant: Guilloche decorative technique. Your work is beautiful and I clearly see the ratchet requirement for even pattern movement in the axis. Changeovers are lengthy we can see but this is a rose engine style machine it is all about prep and the layout then cutting to follow. We love it all. GREAT FANTASTIC RECREATION AND CUSTOMIZING MODEL ROSE ENGINE, TO US YOU ARE VERY GOOD.

Really well thought out Frederic, this is the first home built design I've see that uses both the standard rocking and pumping motions the usual rose engines have, but also the straight line motion that guilloche uses. Original machines are of course out there, but unless your very lucky all sell for very high prices. I suspect you already know of it but others may not. There's a great deal of information about Ornamental Turning in T.D. Walshaws book of the same title.

Hello Frederic. I don't know if you will still answer questions. There is one thing that I do not understand and it is in the support of the cutter how do you make the rubber retract. The pushing action is easy to understand (the screw thread does it). But, in what way is it attached to pull the rubber? Thank you

Hi Frederic, Thanks for taking the time to produce this excellent video. I am about to start making a rose engine based on Fred Connell & Roland Hege's Rambling Rose design. However, there are features in yours that interest me and I would very much like to have a closer look at yours. I realise that this is a very big ask and will understand if you say no. It may not even be possible. I see from your Carbatec mill that you are most likely in Australia but you might still be on the other side of the country :-) So I am east of Melbourne. If you are willing, I would love to hear from you.

Hi Doug, thanks for the comment and interest, I designed and built the rose engine according to my need and specs which is specifically for guilloche work for watchmaking. I would love to show you the machine, I am in Perth WA, if you get a chance to come by that side of the country let me know ! What are the features that interest you in my machine? I have seen the Rambling Rose design before but I'm not sure that this machine is solid enough for fine guilloche work which require minimal or non vibration, but I might be wrong. Let me know how you are going with your rose engine built-off! Looking forward to hear from you. Fred.

Hi Fred, Thanks for responding. I don't often make requests like that and so I forgot to look for an answer :-P I'm on the other side of Australia (East of Melbourne) and so I am unlikely to be able to visit you but I really appreciate the offer. I've only just started the project and it will take me a long while as I am an inexperienced hobby machinist taking on a project that is probably too much for me. But hey, nothing ventured..... I recognise that the Rambling Rose has a very different purpose to what you do but I also know that good design in one machine can often be adapted to a different machine. If you have the time and inclination, I would love to see quality photographs of your lathe in fairly close up detail and from different angles. Please accept my reassurance that I have no commercial interest. Just a thirst for learning new skills and for keeping my ageing mind ticking over :-) Best regards Doug

Hi there, thanks for the comment, I didn't make plans for the construction but had to do hand drawings of parts as I went along with the built. having never seen a rose engine in real I had to study from all sources i could for a while to have a clear picture of the machine I wanted in my mind and work things backward to machine parts. I guess if you understand how the machine works you can built it yourself to your own need, that's how it worked for me!

Very nice machine however this is 2019 and You can use software and a 4 or 5 axis cnc to do the same work and the machine cost is a lot less than building a custom machine to duplicate what was done in the Victorian days.
@liliss67
@liliss67 5 жыл бұрын
Ahh the CNC machines they are great aren't they? Actually a 3 axis CNC milling machine would do! However there is NO CNC milling machine that can reproduce what a rose engine can do, (I'm talking about guilloche work of course) a well set up rose engine can achive a level of finess and finish of engraving a rotating milling bit can't and that is probably why high end watch brands use these (Victorian) machines to produce their guilloche watch dial. The only CNC that might have a chance is the Faro F1 with guilloche attachement, but then at what cost?
